Message from the President
Dear
Parents, I reflected as to what to say in
my Easter letter for this year, I came across the following from a church
bulletin. Some of you may have
seen this, but I do believe it is worth a second reading and reflection.
New life is God's gift to us at Easter. Bringing new life to others is what God
asks for us. We give new life when
we carry out our work with care and attention, when we choose what we know is
right, even when others seem to be choosing the opposite. We give new life when we treat people
with fairness and justice; when we don't rake up the ashes of failure, but look
for the spark of goodness and fan it into a flame; when we listen to the young
with openness and respond with a word of encouragement; when we are patient
with people who make mistakes.
We give new life when we stretch out the hand of
forgiveness and let bygones be bygones; when we reach out in generosity to the
poor and the hungry; when we treat the elderly and the handicapped with respect
and gentleness; when we say thank you and well done to the people who enrich
our lives, and are so often taken for granted.
Easter tells us that the Risen Lord walks with us,
guiding and supporting us in times of struggle and darkness. Easter teaches us that in our
acceptance of difficulties and pain something of value is born. Easter shows us how God has changed our
brokenness and given us new meaning and new life.
May the Risen Lord give each of us the faith and the
courage to face life's difficulties, so that through them we may allow God to
change us - to change our pains to joys so that together we may become a string
of hope - joys which speak of New Life, Hope and Resurrection.
Have a safe and wonderful Easter
holiday!
In
the Spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle,
Mark DeMarco

Assistant Principal for Academic Life
PowerSchool Updates: Student course selections are being refined as the
schedule is being built for the 2010-2011 school year. Student schedules will
be sent home in the summer mailing. Any changes for next year need to be communicated to Mrs. Mattos before
school is out in June. Final
acceptance into all classes will be determined once spring semester grades have
been processed.
Third Quarter Grades were used to determine athletic and activity
eligibility. These grades are
progress grades-to-date and NOT recorded on transcripts. However, the grades
earned by March 12 are a clear reflection of how your son is doing in his
courses this semester. Please contact your son's counselor if you have concerns
about your son's academic standing. Students should work NOW to keep their
grades at "C" level or above. Seventh
period tutorials are available four days a
week in every subject area. Students should seek additional assistance as needed at this time of the
year. It is far better for a
student to bring up his grades at this time than to face potential "D" or "F"
grades at the end of the semester with few opportunities to make those grades
up.
Summer School: Remember,
due to severe budget cuts, many school districts will provide restricted
programs for summer make up and many districts will not run summer programs at
all. Therefore, it is important to
check NOW with your public school
district office as to when or if they will begin enrollment for summer
school. DVC and other community colleges
have their course listings posted now. Students must obtain Mrs. Matto's
signature on the enrollment form for community college courses. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Mattos
or your son's counselor as to summer school recommendations as needed.
Students may also make up some courses online
through BYU or University of Nebraska, but Mrs. Mattos must approve those courses prior to enrollment.
If a student is making up an "F" grade through an online course, the final exam
will be given on a SET DATE during the first week of August in order for a
student to return to De La Salle. Please consider this when looking for options for summer school. Note that grades made up during summer
school are listed on the transcript but are not configured into the GPA. All grades earned will always remain on
the student's transcript.

Registrar
SENIORS: The College Center will be contacting you about
sending out final transcripts to the college of your choice. Please see Mrs. Appel or Ms. Levi if
you have questions.
All NCAA transcripts (if you submitted an application) will be mailed
automatically once the final grades are in. Questions? Please come by Mrs. Szczepanski's office for more
information.
SELECTIVE
SERVICE REGISTRATION: Students are required by law to register for the
Selective Service when they reach the age of 18. You may register on-line at www.sss.gov.
DRIVER'S ED will be offered independently this summer, June 10 through 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Sunday, when we end at
2 p.m. Sign up with Mr. Bradford in Room 201 or call

Seniors DVC MATH AND ENGLISH ASSESSMENT: Diablo Valley College requires all
entering students take a Math and English assessment for placement and advising
purposes. Any student who plans to
attend DVC in the fall of 2010, who did not take the assessment on March
22, must call the Assessment Center at (925) 685-1230, Ext. 2545, to make an
appointment to take these assessments at DVC, or go to www.dvc.edu/admissions
(follow the link to Assessment Center). Students who did take the assessment at DLS should register for
the advising and orientation class, Counseling 095, as soon as possible,
following the instructions given to you by the College Counselors. Come to the
College Center if you have questions. Seniors who will attend a California
State University must register for and take the ELM and EPT placement tests, if
required. May 1 is the last date to complete this requirement. Some CSU campuses are requiringstudents to take the test by this
date or their admission may be rescinded. For details, refer to the March
edition of the newsletter. Those who will attend a UC campus may be required to
take the UC Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) on May 8. Students should receive information about this test directly
from UC; more information at www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe/index.html.
VISIT COLLEGE CAMPUSES BEFORE
MAKING YOUR FINAL DECISION:Make good use of your Spring Break by
revisiting your college options and confirm that your decision is the right one
for you. You may be able to arrange an overnight stay in the residence halls
and attend a class or two; contact the college admissions offices for details.
Juniors JUNIORS AND THEIR PARENTS: Our DLS-CHS Joint College Preview Night on
Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m., in the Hofmann Center at DLS is a great
opportunity to find out about several different types of colleges from the
representatives themselves.
Admissions representatives from a California private college, the
University of California, the California State University system, an
out-of-state university, and the California Community College system will be
here to present information about their type of college, and other useful
information for both parents and students as they continue the college search
process. There will also be ample
time for questions. Speakers will
be available at 6:30 p.m., preceding the program, for families who wish to
speak with one of the representatives individually.
CHOOSING A COLLEGE? COME TO THE EAST BAY
COLLEGE CONNECTION! Students, particularly Juniors and their
parents, can get a jump on the
college selection process by attending the 19th Annual East Bay
College Connection Fair on Saturday, May 8, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., at Saint Mary's College in Moraga.
Representatives from over 150 colleges and universities will be there, including
four-year colleges from all over the state and the U.S., and California
community colleges. Students
and parents will have the opportunity to talk with college admissions
representatives about their educational goals, admissions policies, academic programs,
student life and financial aid. Workshops will be presented on the admissions process,
private colleges, UC's, the CA State University system and Community Colleges,
historically black colleges, student athletes, students with disabilities, and
financial aid. Free shuttles will run every 20 minutes from the Orinda BART Station
to Saint Mary's-it may be easier to take a shuttle than to park on campus. The
fair is free; for
students unable to attend on this date, a similar fair will be held in San Francisco
at the Concourse Exhibition Center on Saturday, April 17, from 1:30 to 4:30
p.m., and at CSU East Bay in Hayward on Friday, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Note: Most college fairs do not offer
workshops such as the one offered by Saint Mary's.
SUMMER ACADEMIC/ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND CAMPS:
Announcements and brochures for summer academic
and enrichment programs, both state and nationwide, continue to be posted on
the College Center's bulletin board near the Attendance Office and in the
College Center. Many of these are
available for high school students at any grade level. This list is also available on the DLS
website, on the Counseling Department webpage, under "College Information for
Juniors." Summer programs are also included on Naviance under the "Colleges"
tab, on the link to "Enrichment Programs." Summer is also a great time to get a
part-time job or do volunteer work locally.
TESTS FOR COLLEGE
ENTRANCE: There is still time
for juniors to take an SAT and ACT this spring-see dates, page 2. We strongly recommend that juniors take
each of these tests now so they will have an idea of where they stand and still
have time to repeat one of the tests in the fall if they want to. Students applying to UC's and highly
selective private colleges will need to take at least two SAT Subject Tests,
and are strongly encouraged to take three. The May test date may be best for AP
students, while June is best for students not in AP courses (e.g. in U.S. history,
chemistry, etc.). If math is
chosen as a subject test, Math Level 2 should be taken (UC's don't
accept Math Level 1). Sophomores who are high
achievers in biology (either regular biology or honors biology) may want to
take the SAT Subject Test in Biology in June. See websites above for registration. If you have questions, call or come by
the College Center.

Campus Ministry
Greetings from Campus
Ministry! We hope your Lenten
journey is proving to be spiritually enriching.
The annual "Spartan
Charity Challenge" is winding up. We have raised over $10,000 to date,
led by the senior class with almost $3,300. We hope to exceed our goal of $14,040. The Challenge money will benefit the
Brothers' Ministries in India, Nativity Village School in Eritrea, the DeMarillac
Middle School in San Francisco, and The Christian Brothers' ministries in Haiti
and the Philippines. Many thanks
for the support of all the parents and school community.
Our final liturgy of the
year, the St. La Salle Liturgy, will be held on April 28. This is a DRESS UP DAY.
Kairos: The last
of seven retreats will be held April 13-16. This retreat is full. We will be visiting junior religion classes during April to give juniors
the opportunity to sign up early for their senior Kairos experience. Kairos
is a faith-based retreat experience for seniors to explore and examine their
relationships with God, self and others. These retreats fill up
quickly. All seven retreats this year were full. Registration will open May 1 and is
online only. Early registration helps ensure the likelihood of
getting the preferred retreat date. A $50 deposit is due at the time of
registration. Please note that attendance at Kairos must be the choice of
the student. It is extremely important that no student is registered
without their knowledge and consent.
SIP - April 22: Mr.
Ladouceur's fourth period sophomore religious studies class will experience the
Sophomore Immersion Program in the Tenderloin.

In the Spotlight
Spotlight on Service Learning I recently received an email from
the Service Learning Coordinator from another high school in the area asking me
what the secret was to De La Salle's success in its Service Learning
programs. Although I felt humbled
by this question, this isn't the first time I have had this question posed to
me. De La Salle apparently has
earned the reputation of being the "model school" when it comes to service
learning. Most recently this
reputation was supported by WASC's evaluation of our school as having a robust
system of implementing service into our curriculum.
Getting back to my counterpart's
initial question in her email, there is not one "secret" to the success of our
programs. One ingredient, however,
is the fact that De La Salle is invested in preparing and training its teachers
in implementing service into their curriculum. As with other academic disciplines, one of the best ways to
have our teachers be exposed to the most innovative ideas in the field of
service learning is through their participation in national gatherings of
experts in the field. On that
note, two of our faculty members are attending the National Service Learning
Conference held in San Jose, March 24-27. This conference, sponsored by the National Youth Leadership Council, has
been gathering educators passionate about service for over 25 years. De La Salle is proud to be sending
Mr. Brett Klement and Ms. Kimberly MacLean as our ambassadors at this
conference. The ideas, innovations
and projects that will be presented at the conference are certain to continue
to fan into flame the passion for service that these two educators contain.
De La Salle is blessed to have
teachers who are passionate about service and are willing to implement that
passion into their curriculum. We
look forward to Mr. Klement's and Ms. MacLean's report from the
conference. As a Lasallian school
in the District of San Francisco, we are encouraged to "continue to develop effective models of
service-learning across the curriculum in educational works," according to the
2007-2011 Action Plan. It is
through the willingness of teachers such as these and the support of our school
that De La Salle can be that "model school" of Service Learning. My hope is that our students'
educational experience is enhanced through the service they do in and through
De La Salle!

Robotics Competition
The DLS
Robotics Team, also known as the "Spartonics (Team 2141)," is attending the
Sacramento - UC Davis Regional Competition of the Annual FIRST Robotics
Competition, March 30 through April 1. The Spartonics will face teams that have
been around for upwards of ten years and are supported by top NASA engineers,
yet we are still able to compete with these powerhouses.
Participation was truly a
challenge for all those who participated in robotics this year, and shows the
time, effort and creativity they put into this "sport of the mind." Everyone gave their maximum effort in
perfecting their design for this year's game. They faced challenges involving the design and building of a
mechanical drive system, a ball kicking system, a camera-based target
acquisition system, and a computer control system...all in the short space of six
weeks of construction time.
Their adult mentors, Mr. Ray, Mr. Bauer, Mr. Stewart and Mr.
Fryman, as well as other parents
who donated their time and guidance, are proud of what our team accomplished,
and of what they learned in the process of creating such a complex machine.
Theatre Arts Company

from the sublime to the ridiculous! Company proudly presents that experience, all from the imaginations of
David Ives (Sure Thing, The Philadelphia),
George S. Kaufman (If Men Played Cards as Women Did, The Still Alarm), Dorothy Parker (Here We Are), John C. Havens (The History of
Television, Condensed), and James Thurber (The
Little Girl and the Wolf, The Unicorn in the Garden). Company takes on the
form of a theater troupe and entertains you in a unique fashion.

About Us De La Salle High School was founded in 1965 as a
Catholic boys' high school in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian
Brothers. We come from a much longer and richer
tradition, however. Our roots extend more than 300 years to 17th
century
France and our Founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had a very
simple
vision of education: that the graduates of his Christian schools would
be
mature, responsible members of society and the Church.
As a Lasallian
school, we have an obligation to make a difference in each student's life so
that when they leave us they will serve others graciously and lovingly. We
cooperate with one another in a spirit of trust and care; our education is
practical, accessible to all, and comprehensive. We are committed to the
poor. We work together- Brothers, Faculty, Staff and Students.
