Message from the President
Dear
Parents,
In setting the annual budget,
we always seek to achieve three goals: providing the highest-quality
educational program, meeting the full financial needs of our
students, and ensuring the long-term financial stability of the school. Needless to say, under current
conditions, achieving all three goals will require a finely calibrated balance
- and probably a generous dose of good luck. This year, the tuition and book
rental fee total $13,900. In the
coming year, that total cost will be $14,400. This is an increase of 3.6 percent, which is this school's
third-lowest increase in the past twenty years.
An
important factor in keeping this increase relatively low will be the elimination
of Credit Cards as a method of tuition payment. The fees that the school pays
for these credit card transactions have amounted to more than $150,000 a year.
From speaking with many parents we have learned that a primary reason for using
a credit card when paying tuition
is to secure airline miles - a good benefit, but one which entails a high cost
for the school. In the interest of keeping costs down, we will not accept tuition
payments by credit card, but will continue to accept tuition payments by other
standard means: bank transfers, checks, and cash.
Another
financial factor to be noted is the current inability of the De La Salle
Christian Brothers, the religious order which founded the school in 1965, to
provide financial support to their sponsored schools. The Brothers' Lasallian
Education Corporation suffered significant losses to its portfolio value last
year and has not yet experienced a commensurate rebound. The impact on De La
Salle High School in the coming year's budget will be approximately $75,000.
The
actual cost of educating our young men is only about 90 percent covered by the
tuition that families pay. In
2010-2011 each student's actual cost of education will be underwritten by
$1,600 derived from fundraising and the generosity of benefactors. Your
tuition payments and our benefactors' donations together represent a serious
investment in your son's education, and will support the school in achieving
the following: -
Advancing the mission through continued improvement of
curricular, co-curricular, and support services programs to
-
best facilitate and enhance the spiritual,
intellectual, physical, and social growth of our young men.
-
Further implementing a total compensation and
performance plan for faculty through the Knowledge and Skills Based Program
(KSBP).
-
Ensuring accessibility to qualified students from
families who are unable to pay full tuition.
-
Incorporating into our cash reserve strategy a
Provision for Plant Renewal, Repair, and Special Maintenance (PPRRSM)
-
to ensure that our facilities are properly
maintained.
-
Providing for responsible resource planning and
development, including the stewardship of resources, personnel, physical plant,
and technology.
We
recognize that a tuition increase is not welcome news, and that for some
families any increase may constitute a hardship.
I
encourage those families to contact Marilyn Gardner at gardnerm@dlshs.org to apply for financial aid,
or to visit the Financial Aid section of our website at www.dlshs.org.
Our plan for the coming year,
carried out in partnership with you, should enable us to balance next year's
operating budget, without diminishing De La Salle's trademark academic program
or decreasing access to this school for students from all socioeconomic
backgrounds. I hope that you will agree that we have struck an appropriate
balance and that we are serving as wise stewards of De La Salle's extraordinary
assets under extremely trying conditions.
Please
feel free to contact me with any thoughts or questions you might have at 925-288-8112
or demarcom@dlshs.org.

Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Friends,
Just a few weeks back, in
mid-February, DLSHS was the beneficiary of a three-day visit by a team of
educators exploring our Catholic Lasallian practices. In last month's Spartan Spotlight Newsletter, Mark DeMarco spoke about the Catholic Lasallian
Assessment Process (CLASP) that was going to occur. You helped us prepare for the "visit" by actively
participating in an online survey in January. The nearly five hundred survey responses from our parents
(50% participation - WOW!) far exceeded what a visiting team normally
receives. Let me thank you for
taking a few moments to help. While your participation in the survey was very satisfying, your responses
to the questions were both very encouraging and strong affirmation. While on campus, the visiting team
spent time with random groups of students and faculty/staff. In addition, we conducted an all day
in-service that provided an opportunity for the visiting team to share the
results of their findings. In
short, they told us that this school community is diligent in paying attention
to its Catholic Lasallian mission.
And in doing so, it is clearly observed by our many, many constituencies
- students, parents and alums. They were highly complementary of this school community
and of the many ways in which we are truly effective in serving our young men
as a Catholic Lasallian school. I
don't believe we could have asked for a better outcome! So where do we go from here? That was the challenge they placed
before us as they posed the question - what would we like DLS to look like in
the year 2015 if we continued to develop our strengths and set a strategic
direction that is in keeping with our Catholic Lasallian traditions? We had a very interesting discussion - visioning
and all!
We are in the season of Lent.
This 40-day period that is observed from Ash Wednesday to Easter on April 4
provides all of us with an opportunity for reflection and time for a personal
inventory of our life. May it
prove beneficial to you.
This is one of my favorite months
because of the collegiate basketball playoffs known as March Madness. Whether a school makes it to the "Sweet
Sixteen," the "Elite Eight" or the "Final Four," all those basketball programs
have accomplished a remarkable feat. Sometimes it is easy to forget about the "journey" and merely focus on
the destination. When we merely
look to the end and forget about what it takes to get there, we miss a great
deal! I trust our young men enjoy
their experiences in this school community as we advance them each and every
day towards greater maturity and responsibility.
Have a great month!

AP
INFORMATION NIGHT REQUEST: Thank you to all who attended our first AP Information Night,
held February 4. We were pleased with the number of parents and students who
attended this information evening. If you have any feedback on the evening that
you would like to give us, please send a message to Mary Ann Mattos at mattosm@dlshs.org.
PRE-REGISTRATION: Pre-registration for the 2010-2011
school year is nearly complete, and our master schedule for the next school
year is being designed and coordinated with CHS. I wish to thank parents,
faculty and our Guidance Department for the many hours that were spent in helping
students with their course selections for next year. The counselors and I
worked with the student to verify selections, check graduation status, and
guide appropriate choices for next year.
Please
note that the master schedule, teacher assignments and final course offerings
are NOT SET at this time. The final schedule, with teacher and class period
assignments, is finalized between this time and the end of June. Final determination of placement
in Honors and AP classes will be made after the second semester grades are
received in June. Schedule changes
in the summer will only be made due to second semester grades, summer school
grades, or special circumstances.
THIRD
QUARTER ENDS MARCH 12: As always, please
look at your son's grades through PowerSchool, and contact your son's teacher if you have concerns
or questions about a grade or progress to date. Activity/athletic eligibility
will be determined during the week of March 15 based on grades to date at the
end of the third quarter.
SUMMER SCHOOL: De La Salle will not be providing summer school, except for a small
number of incoming freshmen. Therefore, it is important to check early with your public school
district office as to when/whether they will begin enrollment for summer school. With the cutbacks again
this year, it will be critical for you to enroll your son early if summer
school is needed. DVC and other
community colleges have their summer dates and course listings available on
their websites at this time. Please feel free to contact me or your son's counselor as to summer
school recommendations as needed. Students may also make up courses online, but
all course choices at any institution must be approved by Mrs. Mattos before
enrollment. Summer courses made up through BYU online will have a
SET DATE for the final exam, so please see Mrs. Mattos before signing up for
this option. Please remember
that no student may return to De La Salle with an outstanding "F" grade in any
subject.

Guidance Services
ALATEEN: The
Counseling Department is continuing to sponsor an Alateen program on campus,
which is a fellowship of young Al-Anon members, usually teenagers, whose lives
have been affected by someone else's drinking or drug abuse.
The
purpose of Alateen is to bring students together to share experience, strength
and hope with each other, discuss their difficulties, learn effective ways to
cope with their problems, encourage one another, and help each other understand
the principles of the Al-Anon program.
Al-Anon
sponsors are a minimum of 21 years old, currently attending Al-Anon meetings,
are active members of Al-Anon for at least two years, in addition to any time
spent in Alateen, and meet their area requirements. Sponsors are an
active part of the group, guiding and sharing knowledge of the Twelve Steps and
Traditions.

Seniors FINAL
COLLEGE DECISIONS: College acceptances
will continue to come out this month and into early April. Continue to check email and websites
for application status and any missing documents. As you narrow your list of
possible colleges, make plans to re-visit those you are most seriously
considering. Many schools have
stay-over programs for admitted students; there are also lists in the College
Center of former DLS students who are available to talk to you about their
colleges. Spring break provides an
ideal time to confirm your choice by making a visit, so book those trips now!
CSU
MATH AND ENGLISH PLACEMENT TESTS: Seniors who will attend a CSU campus
MUST take the ELM (Entry Level Math) test and the EPT (English Placement Test)
at CSU East Bay (or another CSU campus of choice) preferably on March 13 or
March 20. You may have already
received information about registering for the tests; if not, go to:
http://testing.csuhayward.edu/eptelmhome.asp.
Students
who have scored at least 550 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT or 24
on the ACT English section are exempt from the EPT. Scores of 550 on the math
section or 23 on ACT math section exempt students from the ELM. See the website for other exemption
criteria and for information about what the tests cover. Information is also
available at www.csumentor.edu.
DVC
VISIT and MATH & ENGLISH ASSESSMENT: A representative from Diablo Valley College will be at De La Salle on
March 8 to present information about the college. Seniors interested in attending the session must sign up
ahead of time on Naviance. DVC
requires that all entering students take a math and English placement test. On
March 22, at 12:30 p.m., the tests will be given at DLS to seniors who register
in advance. Students will be
required to fill out their applications for admission before March 2 and select
required advising sessions that are held later in the spring; instructions will
be given to students beforehand. Students should listen for announcements from the College Center in
early March to know when to register. Any student who plans to attend DVC in the fall and does not take the
assessment on March 22 needs to take the assessment on their own at DVC. Information can be found at www.dvc.edu or at 925-685-1230, Ext. 2545.
Juniors VISIT
SCHOOLS! Spring break is the best time
to visit colleges, many of which will be in regular session. Call the Admissions Office or check
online at the college's website to arrange for a tour. Also, spend some time on
your own at the campus. This is
the most important way to narrow your list of possible choices. Remember the Naviance website at:
can
give you access to any college website you're interested in. If you're still looking for ideas about
colleges to explore, make an appointment with Ms. Levi or Mrs. Appel.
IMPORTANT
TESTS: Spring is the best time for juniors to take their first SAT and ACT. Since virtually all colleges accept both the SAT and
ACT, and because many students perform differently on the two tests, it is
beneficial to take them both. If
desired, a test can be repeated in the fall in plenty of time for college
admissions. Students applying to the UC system and other highly selective
colleges must also take SAT Subject tests. These are one-hour exams and as many as three may be taken on one test
date. UC's require two SAT Subject Tests in any two different subject areas of
the student's choice, and some highly selective private schools require three.
If math is chosen, it must be the Math Level 2 for UC admissions. May
or June is the ideal time for
juniors to take the SAT Subject Tests in subjects such as chemistry, U.S.
History or foreign language. Sophomores who are especially strong in biology may want to take
the June SAT Subject Test in biology, only. Any other testing should be done
next spring as juniors.
COLLEGE
PREVIEW NIGHT: DLS and CHS are pleased to present the
9th annual College Preview Night for Juniors and their Parents,
on April 21, at 6:30 p.m., in the DLS
Hofmann Center. The program will feature a speaker from each of the following
systems: University of California,
California State Universities, private California colleges, out-of-state
colleges, and California community colleges. Representatives will give an
overview of their type of college and their admissions policies, as well as
take you through an in-depth application review process. Representatives will be here at 6:30
p.m. to talk to students individually about their schools and will give a
formal presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Don't miss this informative evening that will help juniors in
their college planning.
ATTEND
THE EAST BAY COLLEGE FAIR: Students, particularly juniors and your parents, mark
your calendars for the 19th Annual East Bay College Connection,
Sat., May 8, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at St. Mary's College in Moraga. Representatives will be there from over 150 colleges and universities
throughout the country. Look
for details in the April issue of the Spartan Spotlight Newsletter.
SUMMER PROGRAMS: Announcements for summer
academic and enrichment programs, in California and around the country,
continue to be posted on the bulletin board near the Attendance Office. Detailed information is also available
in the College Center, and a list is included in the "College Information for
Juniors" link on the counseling page of the DLS website. Many programs are
offered on college campuses and run from one week to several weeks in
duration. Juniors, especially, are
invited to explore summer programs as a way of further preparing themselves for
college and beyond. Part-time
jobs, volunteer work experience and ongoing participation in extracurricular
activities during the summer are also highly regarded by selective colleges.

The Spartan Charity Challenge is Under Way!
During
our annual "Spartan Charity Challenge" students are asked to donate their spare change to benefit five
charities, three of which we give to each year: -
Our twin school, Nativity
Village School in Shinara, Eritrea (Africa);
-
De Marillac Middle
School in San Francisco;
-
Christian Brothers'
Ministries in India, where several DLS
faculty members have worked during the summer since 1999.
Each
year we select an additional beneficiary. This year we have chosen two:
Last year the Charity Challenge raised over
$14,000. This year our goal is at least $1 more. The drive will run from Ash
Wednesday, February 17, through the Tuesday of Holy Week, March 30.
Donate Your Unused Gift Cards for Good
February 17 through April
3, De La Salle High School is proud to partner with Mercardi ( www.mercardi.com) for this unique program
to donate unused gift cards for a greater purpose. Join us and participate in the "Gift Cards for Good"
program! This year the Spartan
Charity Challenge is taking on more than it has in the past and is adding this
new dimension. As a result of
recent natural disasters in the Philippines and Haiti, and at the request of
Brother Alvaro, the Superior General of the Christian Brothers, this year we
will expand our efforts and support five very worthy organizations. All of the donations received from the De La Salle community through
this program will benefit the five beneficiaries noted above.
TO SUPPORT "GIFT CARDS FOR GOOD," FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:
Step 1: Drop your gift card
with ANY balance into one of the boxes in the Main Office or the Campus
Ministry Office. Use the envelopes
provided and make sure to note the class year to be credited with the donation!
Step 2: Mercardi will provide you with a receipt
for tax-deduction purposes. The receipt is 100% of the remnant value of the
card and will arrive to you within four weeks of your donation.
Step 3: Mercardi collects
the gift cards donated through the program, sells them, and the proceeds of the
sale will be donated to our supported organizations.
To learn more about this gift card donation
program, contact Heather Pastorini, Chief Advancement Officer, at pastorinih@dlshs.org, or call
925-288-8106.

Congratulations
to senior, Matthew Godkin! Matthew has been named as one of the nation's 16,000
semifinalists who have met all requirements to advance to the finalist standing
in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition.
Congratulations
to senior, Shae Hughes! Shae received Contra Costa County's Martin Luther King
Jr. Student Humanitarian of the Year Award. He volunteers at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek,
the Monument Crisis Center in Concord, and participates in the mentoring
programs at De La Salle and at the De Marillac School in San Francisco. The
awards have been given since 1982 to commemorate the civil rights leader's
birthday and to honor county residents for outstanding community service.
SPARTAN
SPEAKERS DELIVER! The 2009-2010 Edition of the De La Salle Speech and
Debate Team had to wait until January 15th to kick off their season
at the prestigious MLK Tournament at James Logan High School. Seniors, Christopher
Ring, Robert Frazier and Austin
Rogers, were the only returning
members who had accumulated points in competition last year leaving a young and
untested squad to find out if they had the moxie to keep up with the Bay Area's
elite forensic competitors. Led by the supportive efforts of new captain Scott
Crossen and returning captains, Austin
Rogers and Robert Frazier, the team quickly realized it could indeed compete
with the best in the Bay Area.
Juniors,
Austin Freitas and Andrew
Clakley, quickly earned varsity
stripes and NFL (National Forensic League) Merit status for points accumulated
in the Impromptu and Parliamentary events. Highlights for each include a 3-1
showing for Andrew Clakley (with partner, senior, Chris Ring) at the prestigious Lowell HS GGSA#3 Tournament and Austin Freitas with back-to-back impressive outings in the finals at
the Stanford Invitational in Impromptu as well as a stellar 3-1 outing (with
partner, sophomore, Alec Sroka) at
the Sonoma Valley HS GGSA#4 in Parliamentary Debate. Not to be outdone, forensic newcomers quickly joined the
fray in establishing themselves as a forensic force to be reckoned with for
years to come. Sophomore Alec
Sroka was thrown into the varsity fire
in Parliamentary Debate with senior captain Scott Crossen at MLK and turned in an impressive 3-2 record. Matching Alec Sroka's flare for the dramatic, sophomore Matt Wallace quickly established himself with stellar performances
at Lowell (3-1 Parliamentary Debate with partner and fellow sophomore, Kevin
Costello) and a Finals appearance at
Stanford in Impromptu. Sophomores,
Kevin Costello (Parliamentary
Debate) and Evan Steele
(Parliamentary Debate & Impromptu), have also shown great promise with
impressive overall winning records and rapid ascension to Merit status with the
NFL.
With
four tournaments under their belts, the Spartan Speakers have accumulated an
astonishing 9 pieces of individual/team hardware and have three events
remaining on this year's calendar (GGSA#5, State and National Qualifiers). The renewed sense of enthusiasm and
dedication to practice, coupled with future leadership in the form of varsity
returnees Austin Freitas and Andrew

About Us De La Salle High School was founded in 1965 as a
Catholic boys' high school in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian
Brothers. We come from a much longer and richer
tradition, however. Our roots extend more than 300 years to 17th
century
France and our Founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had a very
simple
vision of education: that the graduates of his Christian schools would
be
mature, responsible members of society and the Church.
As a Lasallian
school, we have an obligation to make a difference in each student's life so
that when they leave us they will serve others graciously and lovingly. We
cooperate with one another in a spirit of trust and care; our education is
practical, accessible to all, and comprehensive. We are committed to the
poor. We work together- Brothers, Faculty, Staff and Students.
