Message from the President

Dear Parents,

As you know, we are now in the full swing of our Catholic Lasallian Assessment Process (CLASP). Thanks to those of you who completed the survey. Many of you might ask what this process is about. The Assessment Process has been created to fulfill several important purposes:
  • To provide for an internal review and self-assessment of the school, as well as an external, objective assessment;
  • To serve as a source of encouragement and positive reinforcement for the good taking place within the school;
  • To identify critical needs and issues and assist the school in creating and implementing a multi-year growth plan that addresses critical needs and issues;
  • To assess how the school contributes to the educational service of the poor (Christian Brothers, General Chapter, Proposition 12).
The focus of CLASP is to view the Lasallian mission and qualities through the lens of school culture. Culture is a set of values, beliefs, common understanding, thinking and norms for behavior that are shared by all members of the school. School culture is defined by the presence of a set of norms and values that focuses everyone's attention on what is most important and motivates them to work toward a common purpose. School culture is the primary communicator of the Lasallian mission and values. Students and staff alike are absorbed into the spirit and values of the school's culture.

The Board of Trustees uses the CLASP report to ensure that we are in compliance with the policies of the Lasallian Education Corporation. As President, I am charged by the Board with the following Executive Limitation 2.2 which states that the CEO shall not fail to:
"lead the school in District-sponsored assessment processes related to the school's Catholic and Lasallian character, as well as its Religious Studies Program, and respond to these assessments annually."

This will be our second CLASP review. Many of you were not here during the first review, and I think it is important for you to know what the commendations and recommendations were in 2004:

Exemplary Best Practices:
  • There is a strong sense of community across the whole life of the school;
  • Students have great pride in their school;
  • The commitment faculty and staff have to the students and their well-being;
  • The creation of a student-centered environment; The promotion of school-wide character  development; Prayer is woven throughout the life of the school and student activities; Students are involved in a wide variety of service projects-on campus and in the community throughout their four years; Spartan Success provides academic assistance to students; The school provides student financial aid to those in need.
Recommended Practices to Improve:
  • Continue efforts to expand service learning, as a structured, systematic, integral component of the school's curriculum involving all students in the school;
  • Expand the 4-year retreat program to involve every student;
  • Add small group liturgies (individual classes) and liturgies for all students in a grade to the current school-wide liturgies;
  • Continue efforts to connect the content of the religion curriculum to real life;
  • Continue efforts to improve outreach to the 5% minimum (Bishop John S. Cummins Scholarship Program).
I look forward to sharing the result of our next CLASP with you.

In the Spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle,

Mark DeMarco '78

President

Academic_LifeAssistant Principal for Academic Life

We have completed nearly a month of the second semester, and our students are well into their academic course work for this second half of the year.  The students are also beginning to think of course selections for next year.  At this time, please note the following:

REPORT CARDS: First semester report cards were mailed on January 11.  These report cards reflect the work of the entire first semester and are permanent grades stored on the student's transcript.   Please continue to look at PowerSchool as appropriate in order to be aware of how your son is progressing during this second semester.

We encourage you to have your son get additional help as necessary from his teachers during our 7th period.  A copy of the tutorial schedule is available on our website and is posted in the Student Services Building as well.  Please contact your son's teacher if you have a concern regarding your son's academic progress.  The library is open until 5:00 p.m. each day to provide an extra study environment for your son. The Hofmann Center is also open after school.

ACADEMIC PROBATION/F GRADES: Students who fall below a 2.0 GPA are placed on academic probation.  Probation letters were sent home in January.  Any student who earned an "F" at semester should have taken the following action by now:

Seen their counselor if they are freshmen, sophomores or juniors; seen Mrs. Mattos if they are seniors. Please note that all semester "F" grades earned by underclassmen must be made up at night school or summer school before the beginning of the next school year. All seniors must make up "F" grades earned before a diploma will be issued. Freshmen, sophomores or juniors must submit a contract for deficient credits with a plan for course make up signed by parents and counselors. All "F" grades are permanent grades to the transcript and will be calculated into the GPA. Once a student has repeated the class in summer school, the new grade is shown on the transcript, but is NEVER calculated into the GPA. However, if the "F" grade was in Mathematics or World Language for the first semester, and the student receives a second semester grade of a "C" or better, then the student can petition to have the first semester grade changed to a "D." This only applies to sequential classes such as math and world languages. Students who receive a "D" in any class: Colleges and universities expect students to improve this grade by taking the course again in summer school or at a junior college to be eligible for admission into a four-year college.

ATHLETIC/ACTIVITY ELIGIBILITY: Athletic and activity eligibility was recently determined based on semester grades.  Letters were mailed to the homes of applicable students. If you have questions about this, please contact Mrs. Szczepanski at szczepanskim@dlshs.org.

PREREGISTRATION: Freshmen, sophomores and juniors start the pre-registration process during the first week of February. The counselors are going into the classrooms to discuss the process, course selections and timeline, with all students.  This year, in our effort to "go green," the 2010-2011 Course Catalog will be available online only and paper copies of the Course Catalog will not be distributed to students. We will hold a Parents' Drop-In Meeting for scheduling questions or issues on Thursday, February 4, from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. in the Hofmann Center for parents of freshmen and sophomores.  Following this meeting, we will hold our first AP Information Night at 7:30 p.m. in the Hofmann Center for all parents and students interested in AP classes. This is being coordinated with Carondelet High School. There will also be a Meeting for Parents of Juniors with the college counselors on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the DLS Theatre. This meeting is to discuss both college planning as well as looking at appropriate course selections for our juniors as they plan for their senior year and beyond.

Please note: STUDENTS WILL BE REGISTERING FOR THEIR CLASSES ONLINE. Detailed information and instructions for enrolling for classes and printing the course selections will be given to the students during registration week.  Students must print out their course selections, obtain your signature, and return this sheet to their counselor during the registration weeks.  If students do not have access to a computer at home, the course requests can be printed at school. It is very important that students and parents under- stand that the master schedule is built upon student requests at this time of year.  Therefore, only minor adjustments should be made over the summer.  By taking the time now, you avoid many difficulties and little choice later. If you have questions about this process, contact Mrs. Mattos at mattosm@dlshs.org or call (925) 288-8101.

PLAN Test
During the last week of January and the first week of February, counselors met with all sophomores in their religion classes. During these meetings counselors distributed and discussed the results of the PLAN test taken last October. Counselors explain to each sophomore how to interpret and use the results to better select high school courses over the next two years.

PSAT results were distributed to all juniors on January 13.

Seniors
DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE VISIT: Diablo Valley College representatives will come to De La Salle on March 8 to provide interested students with information about attending DVC. Announcements will be made ahead of time to remind students to sign up on Naviance to attend the information session. They will return in late March to administer their Math and English Assessment to students planning to attend community college next fall. The tests are used for placement purposes. Students will also fill out applications to DVC and make appointments for required advising sessions later in the spring.  The tests may also be accepted by community colleges other than DVC. Check with the college counselors if you have questions about this.

CSU ELM/EPT REGISTRATION: CSU applicants should be receiving information from the individual campuses on the ELM (Entry Level Math test) and EPT (English Placement Test) required of many applicants. Students are strongly encouraged to take the test(s) no later than the March 20 test date this year. For more information go to www.testing.csuhayward.edu, or to www.csumentor.edu. Students may take the tests at the nearest CSU campus; they do not need to take it at the campus that they are considering. Information is also available on the counseling page of the DLS website and in the documents file on Naviance.

CSU HOUSING APPLICATIONS: For seniors planning on attending a CSU campus, NOW is the time to apply for housing at many campuses, before the student has actually decided to attend. Many CSU campuses do not have enough housing for all freshmen; and to have an opportunity to live on campus, students must submit a preliminary application ASAP. Check on the individual campus websites for the housing application policies, as they vary by campus; and while many of them encourage early housing applications, some do not allow students to apply before they make their decision to attend.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: A monthly listing for current scholarships continues to be available in the College Center, on Naviance and on the Counseling Dept. page of the DLS website. Interested seniors may pick up available applica- tions or apply online at any time. Scholarships and special programs are available to juniors and sophomores as well.

FAFSA and Cal Grant: Seniors should check Financial Aid deadlines and forms required on each of their prospective colleges' websites. Individual colleges may have their own financial aid deadlines in January or February and may also require forms in addition to the FAFSA (The Free Application for Federal Student Aid-required by all colleges). Don't miss a deadline and miss out on financial aid available from your college! Students and parents filling out the FAFSA need to complete it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov before the earliest deadline, even if they must estimate income and expenses for 2009. The De La Salle Registrar will send the GPA Verification information to the Cal Grant Program for all seniors. Seniors do NOT need to send in a separate form for this program, but must submit their FAFSA by March 2 in order to be eligible for a Cal Grant. Some merit based scholarships and awards also require submission of the FAFSA, so it is a good idea for all students to fill it out, even those who feel they won't qualify for financial aid.

Juniors
JUNIOR PARENTS' COLLEGE PLANNING AND ACADEMIC ADVISING NIGHT: Be sure to attend this important event on Wednesday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the DLS Theatre. The College Counselors will present essential  information to guide the college exploration and selection process. In addition, information for planning senior year courses will be provided.

COLLEGE PLANNING MEETINGS FOR JUNIORS: Beginning the third week of January, DLS College Counselors began meetings with small groups of juniors to formally start the college planning and selection process, providing materials and information crucial to making informed, realistic choices for college. We encourage parents to sit down with their junior students to begin discussing the college search process and a possible trip during spring break to visit different schools. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dina Levi (A-K), (925) 288-8103, or Janet Appel (L-Z), (925) 288-8128.

SUMMER ACADEMIC/ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND CAMPS: Announcements and brochures for summer academic and enrichment programs, both state and nationwide, are posted on the bulletin board near the attendance area, on Naviance,  and on a list in the College Center and on the DLS website. Juniors, especially, are invited to explore the possibility of summer programs as a valuable addition to their activities. These programs offer a variety of new and exciting experiences, and can also be a factor in the college admissions process. Some of these programs have deadlines as early as February, so it's a good idea to check out possibilities this month.

The following are just a small sample of what's available:

For a listing of many more programs, visit the College Center or check Naviance.

TESTING: See "Dates to Remember" (above) for spring test dates remaining. All colleges and universities accept either the ACT or the SAT, and we encourage students to take both. To register, visit: www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com. Students should check the ACT website or check with the College Counselors to see if the colleges they plan to apply to require the writing test, as students may opt to include a writing section with their ACT (the writing test is automatically included with the SAT). Students may want to use the May or June SAT test date for SAT Subject tests, if the colleges they are applying to require them.  Contact the College Counselors for details.

THE SPARTAN CHARITY CHALLENGE BEGINS!
This annual fund raising event will be initiated during the Ash Wednesday prayer service.  For those new to De La Salle, The Spartan Charity Challenge represents De La Salle's commitment to benefiting our less fortunate brothers and sisters, both at home and abroad. Each student, faculty and staff member is asked to donate $10 during Lent. At the end of Lent we donate the funds to some very worthy causes. We have three dedicated beneficiaries and one additional beneficiary every year. Our three dedicated beneficiaries are:
  • Nativity Village School in Shinara Eritrea, which is our twin school.  All first-world Lasallian Schools are twinned with a third-world school to share their gifts.

  • We also benefit the Delegation of the Christian Brothers in India.  Many faculty members have had the honor of spending one month each summer over the past several years with the Brothers and the young people they serve in India and Sri Lanka.  Funds donated to the Indian Delegation aid the ministries where our teachers have served.

  • A local beneficiary is the DeMarillac Academy, a tuition-free school serving children in grades 4-8 who live in San Francisco's Tenderloin District.  The Christian Brothers and the Daughters of Charity sponsor the school, and many of our students volunteer after school as tutors there.
We have two additional causes to help this year:
  • The Christian Brothers' works and ministries in Haiti have been hard hit by the recent earthquake;
  • The Christian Brothers' schools and other ministries in the Philippines were devastated by the typhoons which hit the region in the late summer and fall of 2009.
  • Br. Alvaro, the Superior General of the Christian Brothers in Rome has asked all Lasallian schools to come to the aid of their brothers and sisters in Haiti and the Philippines.
Last year we raised over $14,000 and hope to better that amount this year.  Many thanks for your support of our programs.  God Bless, and a Happy and Holy Lent to you!

Spotlight on Service Learning
As we continue to watch the news about the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, we hear more and more about the new threats to the livelihood of the people, primarily in the form of diseases spreading. Much of this is due to the lack of medical care and the lack of basic resources, especially for personal hygiene, that many of us take for granted. It is especially in light of this reality that one of our Service Learning projects takes on more significance for our freshmen.

As part of the required curriculum of their Health courses, Mr. Selby and Mr. Castello have incorporated the "Fresh Start Hygiene Kits" as a way to bring Service Learning to our freshman students. The motivation for these teachers, besides following one of the Lasallian core principles of "Concern for the Poor and Social Justice," is their realization that personal hygiene may be a subject that our students take for granted and see as more of a chore than anything else. Through this Hygiene Kit Project our students come to realize how vitally important good hygiene is, especially for those who need to make a "Fresh Start."

After learning about the basics of hygiene and personal care, each freshman student is required to obtain the following items: shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, lotion, and disposable razors. Once they have compiled these items, they put them into gallon-size ZiplocĀ® bags and prepare them for distribution.  These "Fresh Start Hygiene Kits" are sent to St. Anthony's Foundation in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco or they accompany the students participating in Ven A Ver.

At first glance, the students may not understand what kind of impact their hygiene kits actually have on these populations.  Mr. Selby and Mr. Castello anticipate this when conducting this project and challenge the students to think about what the impact good personal hygiene and appearance have on people in need.  As a follow-up to the distribution, the students are asked to reflect upon the bigger, systemic questions, such as:
  • Why are people in such need of these simple kits?
  • How could this population benefit from a "fresh start"?
  • What more can be done to serve the needs of these people?
What makes this project even more impacting is the fact that all of these freshmen students will participate in the Sophomore Immersion Program their next year of school.  They will have the opportunity to see with their own eyes the people these kits help. After hearing their stories, the students have a much more complete picture of the importance of their service as freshmen.  Students also have the opportunity to see what the things we usually take for granted can do for those most in need. Most definitely, these are lessons that these students will never forget!

As the New 2010 Year begins, the Parent Association couldn't be busier with social, spiritual, and fundraising activities. We have a burst of activities: Crab Feed, Senior Son/Mother Brunch, Bacchanalia - A Celebration of Food and Wine, and Spring Auction at the Blackhawk Auto Museum this year. This academic year will end with the parent-sponsored Grad Night for our soon-to-be-alumni.

Thank you, again, to all the working hands that make supporting the school easy. The school remains a vibrant and successful venue for our boys' education, in large part because of support from parents and through Parent Association activities.

That being said, please give some thought as to how you might like to get involved this year. We are always open to volunteer help! Let us know at parent association@dlshs.org how you would like to get involved next year, or just send us your feedback on the different Parent Association events you attend.

Happy New Year and Blessings for 2010.

About Us
De La Salle High School was founded in 1965 as a Catholic boys' high school in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian Brothers. We come from a much longer and richer tradition, however. Our roots extend more than 300 years to 17th century France and our Founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had a very simple vision of education: that the graduates of his Christian schools would be mature, responsible members of society and the Church.

As a Lasallian school, we have an obligation to make a difference in each student's life so that when they leave us they will serve others graciously and lovingly. We cooperate with one another in a spirit of trust and care; our education is practical, accessible to all, and comprehensive. We are committed to the poor. We work together- Brothers, Faculty, Staff and Students.
