Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Friends,
 Yesterday afternoon, as I roamed
the campus bundled in a nice warm coat, I observed the classroom instruction
that was taking place. Students and teachers were busy with assignments and
planned work. While the pace is not hectic, the learners are clearly aware that
the end of the semester is not that far off. Eleven days of instruction and
then examinations begin. Yes, the first semester has again moved quickly. I am
always hopeful that our young men understand the significance of final exams
and the importance of semester grades in their permanent record file. I do know
that consistent effort and good study habits often lead to fine grades. And
fine grades open the doors to many opportunities beyond DLS. It continues to be
my prayer that each student will do his best in the remaining weeks of this
term.
In late October and in early
November we conducted our annual Cereal Drive for Saint David's Pantry in
Richmond. I want to publicly thank the many, many students and families who responded
to this request to "feed the hungry." The wonderful response this year of 3,200
boxes far exceeded last year's total by 300 boxes. For the last nine years we
have been the sole supplier of this breakfast commodity for St. David's Pantry,
and they have come to count on our community's generosity. What a great and
simple gift YOU have given them...again!
On Sunday, November 1, we again
hosted our annual Open House for young men and families considering the option
of attending De La Salle. It was a wonderful morning to showcase the many
programs and accomplishments of this school community. The visitors to this
campus were impressed by the breadth of the academic offerings as well as the
numerous ways a young man can be involved in the life of the school outside of
the classroom. For me, the day always serves as a reminder of how fortunate I
am to serve as Principal of this educational community and to share in its
blessings.
Following the semester
examinations, later this month, our students will have a well deserved break
for three weeks before the resumption of classes on January 11. This time of R
& R is intentionally scheduled at an important time to coincide with
Christmas - one of the important Church feast days. As we anticipate the Birth
of Christ in our upcoming Christmas season, it is my prayer and hope that each
one of us experiences the true meaning of our Savior's birth...that of Peace,
Hope and Love. May this season bring you abundant blessings and some wonderful
moments with your family and friends. Merry Christmas!
God Bless!

Message from the President
Dear Parents,
Each
year we have the responsibility to provide you with our annual asbestos
statement. This notice is being sent to all parents and guardians
of students, as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act
(AHERA). In compliance with this
EPA regulation, a complete asbestos survey of our facility was conducted in
1988-89 and an Asbestos Management Plan was produced.
Included
in this document is a listing of all identified materials as well as detailed
procedures for use when disturbing these materials. The Asbestos Management Plan also contains records of all previous response actions
(activities which may or are intended to disturb asbestos-containing
materials.) All response
activities are carried out following EPA, Cal/OSHA, and local Air Quality
Control Board requirements. This document is on file at the school office and
is available for review.
As
required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), we are
notifying you that a semi-annual surveillance of our facility was conducted on
October 30, 2009, to determine if the condition of any asbestos-containing
materials has changed. In addition, the facility is fully inspected every
three years. Our last three-year inspection was conducted on January 31,
2008. The surveillance and inspection revealed that the condition of the
materials has remained unchanged. We do report that during the summer as
part of our safety upgrade the removal of 800 square feet of asbestos
containing acoustical ceiling was removed from our Theater Building by a
certified company.
Please
feel free to contact the school office if you have any questions regarding this
notification.
In
the Spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle,
Mark DeMarco

Assistant Principal for Academic Life
The semester is quickly coming to
a close, with exams scheduled to begin on December 15. The semester exam
schedule is noted above. Exams do not end until Thursday,
December 17. Students will not be excused from final exams for early vacation
plans. We have a long Christmas break,
with plenty of time for holiday plans. It is always important for students to
be prepared for classes and exams, and it is especially important that students
prepare for their semester final exams. Students should be rested and should
set up a study schedule for these exams. It is most important that students are
present and on time for these exams each day. If a student is absent due to
serious illness, special arrangements need to be made with me and the classroom
teacher prior to Christmas break. Please remember that we have 7th
period tutorials in every subject area to help students throughout the
semester. Parents and students should be checking PowerSchool regularly so that
they are aware of current assignments and grades to date. The semester break will begin after the
final exams on December 17. Second semester begins when we return on January
11. Semester grades will be mailed during that second week of January.
SECOND SEMESTER: Your
student's second semester schedule is visible on PowerSchool. Please have him look it over to verify
what classes he will be taking. We will be posting a copy of the entire faculty
locator on the "SCHOOL BULLETIN" page of the parent portal for room assignments
for all teachers. Students should
come in to see me for any necessary class changes prior to the
semester break on December 17. All students are expected to have
their classes set before they return in January. As a reminder, students cannot
drop a year-long course, unless they have failed the first semester in a
sequential course. Please take the time to review your son's second semester schedule with
him. This is also a good time to establish new goals for the second semester
and review accomplishments from the year to date. Please note that the semester
grades you will receive in January are final grades and are recorded on your
son's transcript. If a student received a grade of "F" in any subject, this
must be made up before returning to school next fall.
PRE-REGISTRATION: Finally, we will begin the pre-registration
procedures during the first week of February. Your son will receive pre-registration materials at the
beginning of February, but we are "Going Green" this year and the Course
Catalog will be posted online at
our main website, in the ACADEMIC area. We have set February 4 as our Academic Advisement Night for parents, beginning at 7 p.m. Please note
this date now on your calendars. Parents may want to look over the Course Catalog
online before that evening. More information will follow. A meeting for College
Planning for Junior Parents will take place on Wednesday evening, February 3. The college counselors will be able to answer
questions about academic advisement for junior parents at that time. Mapping
out your son's schedule is extremely important. Please allow enough time to go
over the registration process with your son and make shared decisions. It is
very important that students and parents understand that the master schedule is
built upon student requests at this time of year. Therefore, only minor adjustments should be made over the summer. By taking the time now, you avoid many
difficulties and little choice later. If you have questions about this process,
contact Mrs. Mattos at mattosm@dlshs.org
or call (925) 288-8101.

Registrar
Selective Service Registration Students are
required by law to register for the Selective Service when they reach the age
of 18, and they can register as early as
age 17 yrs, 3 months. You may register by going to www.sss.gov.
Transcripts Seniors
should be requesting all
transcripts through Naviance. If
you are in need of assistance, please contact Mrs. Appel or Ms. Levi in the
College counseling Office. All
other students can use the paper form on the door of the Registrar's Office to
request a transcript. Please allow
at least five days prior to the deadline to process.
The Registrar's Office will be
closed December 19 through January 3.
Driver's Education Classes Applications are available from the Registrar's Office for third and
fourth quarter classes. If you would like to register for third quarter
classes, be sure to stop by the Registrar's Office the first week after
Christmas vacation. The $125

Guidance Services
Testing Results Results of the Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) taken by
DLS juniors in October will be back shortly. Hopefully, counselors will
be able to return individual results to students in December. If the
results do not arrive before the Christmas vacation, they will be distributed
when we return in January. Result distribution will be followed in
January by rounds of group meetings with De La Salle's college counselors, Mrs.
Appel and Ms. Levi. These meetings will focus on planning for the college
admission process, along with information about different college systems, and
the student's present eligibility for some of those colleges. Parents,
plan on asking your junior son for the PSAT results.
Results of the PLAN Test taken in October by the sophomores will also be
available shortly. The PLAN Test is the preliminary version of the
American College Test (ACT) that, along with the SAT, is used in determining
eligibility to four-year colleges and universities. The PLAN results
will be distributed, interpreted and discussed by the counselors through religion
classes during late January. Sophomores will be encouraged to view these results as a way to
assess their academic strengths and weaknesses, think about how to improve
their skills, and begin to think about what career directions they may wish to
pursue in their adult lives. It is hoped that this will motivate
sophomores to do better in school and formulate goals for themselves. Parents should request PLAN results from their sophomore son.

NOTES FOR SENIORS: The Financial Aid Night on December 10 will
provide essential information about the financial aid process and about
completing the financial aid application (FAFSA). There are many advantages to
applying for financial aid, regardless of income, including eligibility
for merit based awards and for federal parent loans which are not need based
but still require the FAFSA. All
parents of seniors should plan on attending this important meeting. Please
note that this meeting will be held in the Garaventa Center at Carondelet.
The December test dates are the latest that tests can be taken and reported in time for most college
admissions for fall 2010.
When a deadline has passed, it is possible to do
standby testing on the date of the test. See Ms. Levi or Mrs. Appel in the
College Center for details.
COLLEGE
APPLICATIONS JUST KEEP GOING AND GOING AND... Deadlines for many
private colleges and out-of-state schools fall in early January. Some priority
deadlines are in December. Seniors need to carefully calendar the deadlines for
schools they are applying to and submit online, or mail completed materials, before
the deadline. For letters of
recommendation from teachers or counselors, please make your requests ASAP,
allowing at least 3 weeks before the deadline...not including holidays! Remember also to keep a copy of all materials and
print out the confirmation page. Students still unsure of where they will apply
to college need to immediately schedule an appointment with Mrs. Appel
or Ms. Levi.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS are available in the
College Center: An updated list of current scholarship
information is available in the College Center, on the counseling page of the
DLS website, and on the Naviance website.
Students should watch for
monthly updates to the scholarship list and also access large free internet
scholarship search engines such as www.fastweb.com; several of these options are listed at the end of the College
Center's scholarship list.
JUNIOR PARENTS' COLLEGE PLANNING NIGHT is Wednesday, February 3, at 7 p.m. in the DLS
Theatre. This is the night parents of juniors meet with the College Counselors
for specific details regarding the college exploration and selection process.
Please mark your calendars for this essential meeting.
PSAT SCORES: On
Wed., January 13, there will be an early start Wednesday for all juniors to meet with college counselors
to review PSAT results. School will start at 8:15 a.m. on this day for juniors
only.
SMALL GROUP COLLEGE PLANNING MEETINGS WITH
JUNIORS: Starting in mid January, small groups of juniors will meet with the
College Counselors to begin their college search process. These meetings will
provide juniors with information about college options and the selection
process, admissions requirements, and a planning schedule in preparation for
completing college applications in the fall.

Don't miss
out on your opportunity to make a year-end gift and receive valuable tax
benefits!
As we approach the end of 2009,
we hope that you consider the ongoing needs of the school and the De La Salle
Annual Fund, which helps to bridge the over $1,500 gap in tuition and the
actual cost of educating each student, helping to keep tuition affordable for
all parents.
When considering your year-end
charitable gifts, please consider investing in the De La Salle Annual Fund. Your son will benefit from your gift of education
throughout his time at De La Salle, into college and beyond!
It's also a great time to make a gift
of stock, securities or other real property. You may receive significant
tax benefits based on the fair market value of the property at the time of the
gift and avoid capital gains tax on appreciated property. Contact your
financial advisor to learn more about the benefits of making a gift of stock.

Je fferson Award for Public Service This
November the Jefferson Award for Public Service was awarded to Russell Zillgitt. Russell,
a junior, participated in the Livestrong Challenge last summer, a 100-mile bike
ride in San Jose. He managed to
raise over $1,300 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The money he raised will help provide informational packets to
offer support, inspiration and hope to cancer patients.
Model United Nations Club On Oct.
30 and 31, eighteen students joined over 200 area high school students in the 19th
Annual Contra Costa Model United Nations. This was De La Salle's ninth year
participating. Our students represented the countries of Austria, Kenya,
Ukraine and the United States.
The
conference lasted two days, starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and concluding at 4
p.m. on Saturday. In preparing for the competition, each delegate researched the
United Nations, the nation they represented, and the issues scheduled for
discussion. During the competition the delegates proposed, discussed and
debated resolutions for the issues they were assigned. As in the past, several
De La Salle students were recognized for their participation. This year our
delegates won five awards.
The
Distinguished Delegate Award was given to Michael Baltz, Ilia Dolaptchiev, and Andrew Sansoe. The
Exceptional Delegate Award was given to Greg Roh and Matthew Wallace. The club is already looking forward to the
U.C. Berkeley Conference in March.

De La Salle Ski Club Update
The De La Salle Ski Club is planning four trips to Tahoe ski resorts in
2010. This year we will be taking
day trips to Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, and Sugar Bowl. The Ski
Club trips are open to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities and grade
levels. Please check Mr. Shively's webpage at www.dlshs.org
for more information on prices and dates.
These ski trips would make a great Christmas
present for any Spartan or Cougar skier or snowboarder!
Cereal Drive
With a huge THANK YOU to the Spartan Community for providing 3,200 boxes of cereal to Saint
David's Pantry in Richmond. This
is the #1 food on the Saint
David's Pantry request list.
It's a fact: Breakfast cereal is a
convenient and healthy snack; yet, for the poor, it may be unattainable.
Attention Senior Parents
Order forms for cap and
gown and graduation announcements were sent home a few weeks ago with your son. These orders must be returned to school before
Christmas break. There is no charge for the cap and gown. Every senior MUST order one. Graduation announcements are optional, but they must be ordered by the
deadline. If you have questions, contact Mr. Aliotti at aliottij@dlshs.org or (925) 288-8116. DON'T
MISS THIS VERY IMPORTANT DATE! Because of our early graduation date, orders must
be finalized before Christmas break.
Editor's Correction Zachary Waterson's name was inadvertently left off the list of Spring
Sports 2009 Scholar-Athletes
published in last month's Spartan Spotlight. Zachary participated on the JV track team during his
sophomore year and maintained an excellent gpa.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY students
collected food and socks for the homeless in People's Park. On Friday,
November 20, more than twenty NHS members gathered in room DM3 to put
together over 200 bagged lunches. On Saturday, November 21, Nick Pittore, Kevin Mosby, Jared Guthrie, and NHS co-moderators, Ms. Lillian Dickson and Mr. Jim Olwell,
took the lunches and bags of new socks to People's Park to hand them
out. The food, and especially the socks, was accepted with great
thanks. It was a very humbling experience for all involved.
Thanks to all who offered food, socks, their time and prayers for this day.

Parents' Corner
Time
to break for the holidays, but also time to reflect on all we have accomplished during the first half of
this school year (Back-to-School Night, Freshman and Sophomore Liturgies and
dinners, Open House, Faculty Luncheons, etc.), and then to look ahead with
anticipation to all of the events and activities that fill the calendar for
these next few months. Thank you all for getting involved.
Thank
you to Brenda Pittore and Debbie
Chinowth for helping put together an
outstanding Junior Ring Ceremony and reception afterwards. The Mass and
Ring Ceremony were held at St. John Vianney,
was very meaningful, and the food was wonderful. (Boy, did they go through
it!) The young men were thrilled to receive stainless steel water bottles
this year. Thank you to the .volunteers: Cherie Soza, Chris Logan,
Donna Kozel, Karlyn Hunt, Lorena Martinez-Ochoa, Lynne Breshears, and Theresa Reed.
Get
your tickets ASAP for the Crab Feed & Dance, January 23. Seriously, this event is always a sellout, so
don't delay! This is a fun celebration that involves parents and alumni, and
our senior students serving. The ticket form is available at the website
and Main Office.
The
Senior Mother/Son Brunch on Sunday,
February 7, is a special occasion
you will not want to miss. The liturgy touches on the unique relationship
between mother and son, especially as your young men are preparing to venture
forth after high school.
Blessings
to you and your family for the Christmas holidays and the New Year,
- Tom &

About Us De La Salle High School was founded in 1965 as a
Catholic boys' high school in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian
Brothers. We come from a much longer and richer
tradition, however. Our roots extend more than 300 years to 17th
century
France and our Founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had a very
simple
vision of education: that the graduates of his Christian schools would
be
mature, responsible members of society and the Church.
As a Lasallian
school, we have an obligation to make a difference in each student's life so
that when they leave us they will serve others graciously and lovingly. We
cooperate with one another in a spirit of trust and care; our education is
practical, accessible to all, and comprehensive. We are committed to the
poor. We work together- Brothers, Faculty, Staff and Students.
