Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Friends,
WOW! What a month we've just had! I tend to look forward and not gaze back over my shoulder on
what has just taken place or what I failed to observe. But given the events of the past few
weeks, please allow me to comment on them for few moments.
De La Salle High School has
earned and been given many privileges over the years. Most notably, we have a remarkable community of people
(students, parents, alums, faculty/staff and friends) who understand and
embrace our Philosophy and Mission. These individuals have a well developed habit of supporting us when
things go well and standing with us when we find ourselves in moments of
concern and challenge. The
unexpected death of a teenager challenges all of us to recognize our
vulnerability and the fragility of our life. The loss of someone so young couldn't possibility happen to
me - some students think! What this school experienced in the loss of Darius Jones were many
conversations about how important it is for each and every one of us to live
our life in such a positive and caring way that we never take for granted what
we have or may lose. We can lose
that loved one in the flash of a moment. And our regrets are that we failed to fully express our appreciation,
respect and love for that other person who means so much to us. We have been told that we know
neither the hour nor the day! I
know that it sometimes sounds trite to say, "When was the last time you told
someone that you loved them?" I say,
"Don't miss the opportunity!"
In addition to the Darius Jones
tragedy, we mourn the passing of Claudia Garaventa, mother of Andrew '08 and
Steven '11. They have experienced
the loss of their mother who brought them into this world and unfortunately,
they had the task of burying her all too soon. These young men will continue to have the support and
love of this school community as we support them in their grief.
As if that was not enough, we also buried Br.
Raphael-Philip Thez. Br. Philip
had been a member of the Brothers Community here at DLS since July 2008. Having moved from full-time school work
to a semi-retired schedule, Br. Philip told me upon his arrival that he still
had many good years in front of him but he just wanted to be with and around
the students. "Whatever you want,
I'll do," he said. His short time
with us in Concord, in fact, was a "coming home." Having grown up in this area, it was most fitting that his
final days were closely linked with this community. May the good Lord shine his face
upon Darius, Claudia and Br. Philip. To all of you, I again express my heartfelt thanks for the TLC and
prayers you sent our way!
As this new month begins, we are
clearly in the throes of the fall season.
Our trees have begun to shed their leaves and we have turned our clocks
back one hour. The days are
growing shorter and the temperatures are dropping. For me, this means that Thanksgiving is just around the
corner. I, like so many of you,
have many reasons to be thankful amid the challenges and organized chaos we
live with each day. However, I say
thank you for all that God has placed before me: family, friends, loved ones,
good health, students (absolutely!), families, our school community, my religious
community, freedoms, benefactors and the list goes on and on and on.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Message from the President
Dear Parents,
This is the time of year when all Americans share the same
intention, which is to express our appreciation for all of the wonderful things
we have in our lives. During our time with families and friends, we reflect
upon every facet of our lives and how we have been blessed with great people
and wonderful experiences. Do you remember the days when you were in school -
pilgrims, Native Americans, yams, and hand turkey drawings? We cherish the
memories of those days and live them today in our celebration with family and
friends.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of De La Salle High School, we wish
you a Happy Thanksgiving. We thank you for partnering with us in the education
of your son.

Assistant Principal for Academic Life
The first quarter officially
ended on October 16. For the first time we will not be
sending out quarter report cards, as all parents and students have live access
to their grades in PowerSchool. The quarter grade is indeed a progress grade to
date, with the semester grade being recorded on the student's transcript. However, please note that the quarter
grade GPA is used to determine athletic eligibility/activity. If you have any questions or concerns
regarding your son's grades, please contact his respective teachers. Every
effort should be made to encourage our young men to seek the help they need so
that their grades are satisfactory at semester.
Our tutorial program continues in every subject area during 7th
period. The list of classrooms and
teachers for the tutorials is posted in every classroom, is posted on our
webpage, and you received a copy of this schedule before Back-to-School Night.
If your son is experiencing any difficulty in a subject, he should absolutely attend study hall on a regular basis. We have
several teachers available to specifically assist with study skills this year.
Your son should also be using his Student Planner to keep close
track of his homework, projects, upcoming quizzes and tests, and other responsibilities. Department policies were set before
school began so that a uniform and consistent policy around late work and extra
credit could be developed for our students. Generally speaking, most teachers
at De La Salle do not accept late work or extra credit. Every student should also have a study
buddy for each class. It is our
desire, through PowerSchool, to keep you informed as much as possible regarding
your son's continuing academic advancement.
Semester exams will be administered on
12/15, 12/16 and 12/17. Students
are expected to be at school for all final exams. Please note that vacation plans should not be made until
after December 17, as there is a long break for the holidays.

Guidance Services
Testing and Retreat Day Update On
Oct. 14, De La Salle held its annual Testing and Retreat Day.
- Freshmen attended an
on-campus retreat while sophomores, juniors and seniors participated in various
college-related activities sponsored by the Guidance Services Department.
-
All sophomores were given the PLAN test, a preliminary version of the American College Test (ACT). The results will be shared with
sophomores in January and will yield information regarding their academic
strengths and weaknesses, as well as how their interests relate to various
career options.
-
Juniors were given the
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), a shorter version of the SAT used
to help determine college eligibility.
Results will be distributed in December, (if available, otherwise in
January), after which juniors will be seen by the college counselor and begin
the process of post high school planning.
-
Both the PLAN and PSAT
were paid for by tuition. Every
DLS junior and sophomore is automatically registered to take these tests. Sophomores and juniors were given an
orientation and instructions regarding this date on September 30.
-
COLLEGE ESSAYS: Seventy seniors attended
the College Essay Writing Workshop, and twenty attended the College Application
Workshop sponsored by DLS College Counselors, Janet Appel and Dina Levi, on October
15.

Dec. 10 Joint
CHS/DLS Financial Aid Night for Parents of
Seniors
To register for tests online, go to www.collegeboard.com for SAT and www.act.org for ACT.
Mark Your Calendars for the College Financial Aid Workshop On Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7
p.m., in Carondelet's Garaventa Center, a financial aid expert from the
University of San Francisco will explain the financial aid process and how to
fill out the FAFSA, which is the basic financial aid form required by all
colleges. This is an important meeting for ALL senior parents, regardless of
whether or not you think you qualify for financial aid. Worksheets for
completing the FAFSA online will be available that evening and in the College
Center. The completed FAFSA should be submitted between January and March 1,
2010. The earlier the better! Online submission after January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov is strongly recommended.
Letter of Recommendation Requests November 24 is the last day
students may make initial requests for both teacher and counselor letters of
recommendation. Students should refer to their "Senior Application Guide" for
specific guidelines on assembling packets for teachers and counselors.
UC and CSU Applications Both UC and CSU applications are
due this month! Your student is required to apply online. Application websites for CSU and UC,
respectively, are:
Applications may be submitted any time this
month, but the deadline for all UC campuses and many CSU campuses is
November 30. If a student has difficulty with internet access,
see one of the college counselors for help. The UC system requires essays as
part of the application; CSU's do not. Excellent tips for writing the UC essay are available at www.californiacolleges.edu. Letters of Recommendation are NOT required (or accepted) by UC or CSU.
Other Applications Students need to be attentive to
varying deadlines for early action and early decision for private and
out-of-state colleges and universities. Many schools have a November 30 application deadline, and many early
action/decision deadlines are November 1 or Nov. 15. Deadlines should be checked for each
school! The best plan is to always apply ahead of the deadline. This is especially true for online
applications; the application website may get jammed with submissions close to
the deadline. Check out www.commonapp.org for expediting
applications to multiple schools.
Consider applying early to colleges with "rolling admissions" policies.
With all applications, email is becoming
the most common means of communicating with students. It is important that students provide accurate,
up-to-date email addresses to colleges, that they check email regularly and
that they check their "spam" or "junk mail" folders in case messages end up
there. If a student changes his
email address, be sure to notify the colleges. In addition, many colleges provide an ID number to the
student when the application is received.
The student is expected to use this number to access his application
status on the college's website and to respond to requests for additional
information found there.
Housing For many CSU's and some out-of-state
public colleges with impacted housing, it is important to apply for housing as
soon as possible-even this fall, before a student knows whether he will attend
or not. Some applications are
free; some require a deposit which is usually refundable. Check the policies of individual
colleges and make plans now to assure on-campus housing, which is strongly
recommended for freshman year, at the least. Information is available on the college websites by
following the links for housing. For private colleges and UC's, housing usually does not need to be
reserved until admissions are finalized.
Reminder Students must have
official SAT and/or ACT scores sent directly from the College Board or ACT to
all of the colleges they are applying to, in addition to reporting the scores
on the application itself. This can be done online or by phone.
College Visits at DLS College representatives
will continue to visit the De La Salle and Carondelet campuses through November
and into December. Interested
juniors and seniors can sign up electronically on Naviance to attend these sessions. For regional visits made by various
colleges from across the country, check announcements on the bulletin board
outside the attendance office, and the College Visit list on Naviance.
Scholarship Information Students need to check the "Scholarship" file in the
College Center on a regular basis to keep up with scholarship listings. They will be updated on a monthly basis
and will be included on Naviance and the Counseling Dept.'s page of the DLS
website. Students may also access
many scholarships via the internet on www.fastweb.com,
www.scholarships.com and other
sites.
Parents of Juniors The most important thing you can
do at this time to help your students prepare for college is to encourage
them to do as well as they can in their coursework this semester. They will receive their PSAT results in January,
and we will begin meeting with them in small groups that month as well. Mark
your calendars for our Junior Parents College Planning Night on February 3.
There will be plenty of time after this meeting for them to register to take
their first SAT and ACT in the spring.
For further assistance, call Ms. Levi at (925)
288-8103 or Mrs. Appel at (925) 288-8128.

Campus Ministry
It is with the spirit of
gratitude and hope the approaching holiday season brings that we in Campus
Ministry greet you!
Retreats Our third Senior
Kairos Retreat of the year, Kairos #55, will
run from November 17-20 at the
beautiful Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg. Senior parents, if your son has not signed up for a Kairos Retreat, we
urge you to talk with him about it. This is a marvelous experience, affording him the opportunity to put his
high school experience in the perspective of how he has grown over the past
four years in his relationship with God, others and himself. Kairos Retreats tend to fill up quickly,
and we don't want anyone who wants to attend to be left out. Spaces are available on Kairos #58,
March 2-5, and Kairos #59, April 13-16. Waitlists are available for Kairos #56
and #57. Registration is only
available on-line. To register, go
to http://www.dlshs.org/campus-ministry/retreats/index.aspx and select the retreat link on the right panel for
the retreat you want to attend.
The first of two Father-Son
Retreats will be held Nov. 6-8 at the Jesuit
Retreat Center in Los Altos. These
retreats are open to students in all
grade levels and their parents. There are still spaces in the February
Father-Son
Retreat, as well as the Parent-Son Retreat.
It is again first-come, first-served. Registration is only available on-line. To register go to
http://www.dlshs.org/campus-ministry/retreats/index.aspx and select the

grade. They each completed an Eagle Project to benefit the community at the
historical Howe Homestead Park in Walnut Creek. Byron built a shelter to
protect a historic walnut huller from the early 20th century. Mark
created ten signs to designate the variety of buildings at Howe Homestead and farm
that was established in 1910. These projects took over 400 hours to complete
from the design of the projects, solicitation of donations, acquisition of
materials as well as recruitment and management of volunteers. The workforce
included DLS students Wilson Lam, Josh Grosswirth and Lance

Spotlight on Service Learning
One of the primary ways in which
De La Salle measures its success with the students is whether or not our
graduates live up to the ESLR's-the Expected School-Wide Learning Results. As any current De La Salle student will
be quick to point out, a graduate from here is a man of Faith, Integrity and
Scholarship. Although at times it
is difficult to measure if a student embodies these three characteristics, the
constant challenge of teachers is to incorporate learning experiences that are
directly tied into one of these ESLR's.
In our Science department, the
teachers of sophomore Biology have incorporated a Service Learning experience
into their curriculum that helps us measure how these students are becoming men
of integrity. A man of integrity
is a man who "embraces social and personal
responsibility" and during the student's work in the Ecology unit of their
Biology class, our students are seriously embracing their social responsibility
of being good stewards of our world.
After
learning about Environmental Science, ecosystems and everything that goes into
ecology, these sophomores embark upon their Environmental Science Service
Project. In this project the
students get to put their knowledge of the environment into action by choosing
an environmental organization to support with at least six hours of
service. The student must analyze
what human interventions can help a given ecosystem and then provide the
manpower to support this ecosystem.
Our students have selected such places as the Lafayette Reservoir, Mt.
Diablo State Park, the Delta, etc. Their work has ranged from doing environmental clean-up to removing
rotting fences and debris to planting new trees. With each student in these Biology classes required to work
with an environmental organization for at least 6 hours, our community
definitely benefits from their service.
More
important are the life lessons that these students learn through the service
they do. As part of the assignment,
the students are required to write a two-page reflection on what they have
learned from the experience and how it has impacted them. These reflection papers prove to be the
best evidence of the impact this service has had on their lives and on their learning. One student clearly states that his
individual work helped him make a broader connection to the impact humanity has
on the environment. He claims that this experience "showed me how much we need
to improve our land because we tend to destroy it."
In an
age when the discussion of the environment seems to be on the forefront of many
peoples' minds, it is encouraging to know that the seeds of good stewardship
are being planted in our young Spartans.
The Asian Pacific Islander Club recently teamed up with Project RESOLED
to provide refurbished shoes to families living in below poverty conditions as
well as those that were affected by the recent tsunami in the Philippines. With
the help of the De La Salle community, Project RESOLED received hundreds of
shoes that will be brought to the Philippines. The Asian Pacific Islander Club
would therefore like to say thank you for your generosity and support.

About Us De La Salle High School was founded in 1965 as a
Catholic boys' high school in the Lasallian tradition of the Christian
Brothers. We come from a much longer and richer
tradition, however. Our roots extend more than 300 years to 17th
century
France and our Founder Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had a very
simple
vision of education: that the graduates of his Christian schools would
be
mature, responsible members of society and the Church.
As a Lasallian
school, we have an obligation to make a difference in each student's life so
that when they leave us they will serve others graciously and lovingly. We
cooperate with one another in a spirit of trust and care; our education is
practical, accessible to all, and comprehensive. We are committed to the
poor. We work together- Brothers, Faculty, Staff and Students.
