Speaking Is Sexy Tip #6, Vol. 3

Why Should They Listen To You?

You've been invited to give a speech at a major event to a group you've never spoken to before. They heard you were knowledgeable, you come recommended by someone they respect, and they're asking you to be one of the featured speakers. It's a good gig for you. The audience will be loaded with exactly the kind of folks who can benefit most from your expertise. There are other speakers on the agenda, some of whom are famous, or at least much more well known than you are. It's a compliment to you to appear on the same stage with these people. You should be thrilled at the opportunity, right?conftable

Wrong! Instead of jumping at the chance to be in this stellar company, you hesitate. You can feel your heart pounding and your hands getting sweaty. Even though you've spoken to groups of this size before, suddenly your confidence seems to have gone south. You can think of half a dozen reasons why this isn't the right time or the right place. You're not at all sure you can do this.

You make some excuse about finding room in your calendar, saying you'll have to let them know. You're about to blow a prime opportunity to move to the next level, to become one of the 'go-to' experts in your industry that are in constant demand, and you know it. Yet you tell yourself you won't be able to cut it. Who are you, anyway? You're not as well known or experienced as those heavyweight hitters. How can you compete with them? What can you say that the audience hasn't heard before? Why should they listen to you?

Remember that everything you want is just outside your comfort zone. The only way we ever grow and improve is by pushing ourselves out of the comfortable nest we've been languishing in, and doing the very thing we're afraid to do. But taking that step can be scary.

Whatever your field of expertise, there are always going to be others who know just as much or more than you do. So what? You have three things to offer that make you different and special enough to share the spotlight: your authenticity, your particular point of view, and the unique way you deliver your message.

Even when given the same topic, no two people ever give the same speech. What you will say is colored by your background, your life experience, your personality, your goals, and your speaking style. How you present yourself and your topic are totally unique to you.

That being the case, how you present yourself to the audience is going to be different from anyone else, including the famous heavy hitters. Your take on the subject is going to be just as valid and possibly more interesting. If you've been asked to share the stage, it means that someone thinks you have something valuable to say, and that how you say it is worth listening to. All you have to do is be yourself and speak authentically from your true beliefs, in your own personal style. That's what makes you unique.

conftable

You never need fear competing with the heavy hitters. The audience will benefit from hearing your take on your subject. They'll want to listen to you because you're offering them the gift of your unique perspective. You'll benefit from stepping out of your comfort zone and up to the next level. It's a win-win situation for everybody.

      Go for it!

Revealing an Embarrassing Secret

We all have an embarrassing secret that we don't want to reveal because we're afraid people will think less of us if we do so. For many, many years I hid mine. I was sure that people would look at me strangely or not want to be around me if they knew I was less than perfect.

      Boy, was I wrong!

The thing about hiding the truth about yourself is that you are depriving yourself and the folks you come in contact with of the opportunity to have an honest relationship with you. True, you don't want to just blurt out your deepest feelings or most painful memories at inappropriate moments. You want to be sure your revelations will be received with kindness, consideration and sympathy, and not with distaste, anger or ridicule.

But it is far better to be open about the things you cannot change that have shaped who you are. Facing the secrets of the past helps you understand yourself and it helps others understand you. And with understanding come the gifts of appreciation, sympathy, empathy, and love.

So here's the embarrassing secret I used to be afraid to reveal.

For over 20 years, I suffered from agoraphobia, the fear of crossing open spaces. Sometimes I couldn't leave my house for more than five minutes, without scurrying back inside.

My enemy was not the great outdoors. It was simply fear.

Everyone experiences fear on occasion. And everyone's fear is a little bit different, personal to the individual. Mine was fear of being alone out in the world. I didn't feel safe by myself. Although I was perfectly content to live on my own, I needed the comfort and companionship of someone I knew well whenever I ventured out of the safety of my home. No way could I dream of getting up to speak in front of a room full of strangers!

I'm so proud to say that I overcame my fear. It took, first of all, the courage to admit there was something wrong. Then came the desire to fix it and to seek out the help I needed to overcome it.

And wow! Look at me now!

Today I speak in front of groups of all sizes, shapes and interests. If I can do it, so can you! Let me help you. Contact me at   Marion@marionclaire.com.
