Speaking Is Sexy Tip #15, Vol. 2
How Do You Know If You're A Sexy Speaker?
Anyone who speaks a lot, either as a professional speaker or because it's the best way to promote your profession or product, knows that it's not enough just to get up in front of an audience and start talking. Would that it were! Wouldn't it be terrific to know that we never have to be nervous about facing all those eyes, that whatever we say will excite and inspire our audience, and the end result will be resounding applause, pats on the back, an invitation to come back and speak again, and a slew of more satisfied clients. If it were that easy, wouldn't we all be doing it!
The fact is that every accomplished, experienced speaker who does get up and start talking will tell you that speaking is fun, speaking is exciting, speaking is the quickest, most reliable way to promote yourself, your products and your services. Some of them will even admit that speaking is sexy.
Think about it. To be the object of everyone's attention in a roomful of folks who can't take their eyes off of you and are hanging on every word you say... isn't that pretty sexy?
According to my Pocket Oxford Dictionary, a 'sexy' project or product is one that affects us as 'stimulating, exciting, trendy or arousing.' Doesn't that sound like the kind of speaker we'd all like to be?
We definitely want to stimulate our audience, hold their attention, give them the information they came to hear, and have them walk out afterward feeling buoyed up, energized and happy they came. We want to show them how exciting our subject is so they'll want to know more about it, get closer to it, make it part of their lives. We'll emphasize what makes our topic trendy, up-to-date and modern, something they must be knowledgeable about that fits into the latest and best thinking in the field. And we'll certainly plan to finish our talk by rousing our audience to take a specific action that will benefit both them and us. If you're doing all of that every time you get up to speak, you're a sexy speaker.
If you're not yet a sexy speaker, but would like to be, start paying attention to the speakers you hear who are. Watch what they do as well as what they say. Notice how they move, use their bodies, the expression on their faces. When do they walk as they talk and when do they remain absolutely still and silent? Do you feel like they're speaking only to you? When do they pause for emphasis, change their vocal tone, speed up or slow down their word patterns? How do they make you feel so energized that you want go up afterward and ask them for all their speaking secrets?
Becoming a sexy speaker takes knowledge and practice. Both are easy to come by in our digital world. Research what speakers you admire have written and imitate them. Get a coach to help you overcome your fears, make the most of your abilities and fine tune your performance. Most important of all, practice, practice, practice. Whenever you're asked to speak say, "Yes!"
Give yourself as many chances as you can to become the sexy speaker you know you can be. After all, your goal is to influence and inspire your audience. Being a sexy speaker makes it a whole lot easier!

Food For Thought
I don't know anything about luck. I've never banked on it, and I'm afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else; hard work and realizing what is opportunity and what isn't. ~ Lucille Ball |
More about Marion Claire
For over 20 years, I suffered from agoraphobia, the fear of crossing open spaces. It took the form of extreme stagefright and panic attacks. Whenever I had to appear in front of people during that time, in any capacity, I was a shivering mess.
In college, I wanted to be an actress, but found out pretty quickly I wasn't very good. I was playing the lead in Eugene O'Neill's 'A Touch of the Poet' at the time, and distinctly remember fighting panic attacks throughout the entire Four Act play! It was like I split myself into two people: one was reciting my lines, the other was telling myself to calm down, focus, and don't faint! That's a heckuva lousy way to spend three hours on a stage, let me tell you! It was by a sheer act of will that I didn't pass out in the middle of Act Three! The moment the curtain came down on the last performance, I gave up acting.
Eventually, I realized that I wasn't afraid of being on stage, I just wanted to be there as myself, not as a fictional character. That changed everything. It took awhile to make that discovery, but I'm happy to report, that today, I speak in front of groups of all sizes, shapes and interests. If I can go from a stage-terrified puppy to a calm, self-aware lioness, so can you! Whatever your speaking problem, let me help you overcome it. Contact me at Marion@marionclaire.com.
