             Co- Presidents Letter

Each general meeting becomes a treat the moment we enter the auditorium. The refreshment table is filled with delectable treats, the coffee is good, flowers abound and laughter fills the room. Mary Jo and I find it difficult to bring the meeting to order as we would like to continue visiting.

The new executive board was voted upon for 2010-2011.We have so many talented women who have agreed to give extra time to the club, some staying on for a second year. Congratulations, all!
Katy Ladra and Joan Sanders had our rapt attention as they "painted their pictures "with flowers and at the same time, giving us pointers. I wonder how many of us will be making trips to Mac's Smoke Shop looking for tobacco?
The new member tea was held at the home of Kathy Ladra. What a gorgeous setting for a party. The class of 2009 did themselves proud with wonderful treats for us all. Every new class bring with them special talents that keep the club "healthy".
Toni Wisman and Pat Sanders did it again! The afternoon was lovely. Thank you both for your excellent work.

Dear Garden Club Members,

Gamble Garden is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Garden Club plans to honor this occasion with a grant outside of the normal project funding process. The Garden Club board voted to have a  Holiday Affaire on December 4th 2010. All net proceeds, up to $7500  for a "brick", would be granted to Gamble.
This Holiday Affaire will be smaller and feature a more limited array of goods . The special event will be held at Gamble. More details will follow.
Initially, we thought that we would put the money raised into the operating account and disperse the grant from that. It was brought to our attention that the process would be "cleaner" and the donations would also be tax deductible it the money was put into the Charitable Trust.

The trust agreement states " all decisions of the Board of Trustees of this Charitable Trust shall be subject to the majority approval of the membership of the Garden Club of Palo Alto, any such vote to be subject to the prevailing rules and regulations of the said Garden  Club."

The Trust Agreement cannot be altered. However, the project funding
process, how the purpose of the Trust can be accomplished, was formed by the Trustees and the
mbership outside the Trust as an advisory  process. Thus the 'project Funding g
uidelines' document is a binding  document since it was agreed to by the Trustees and the Membership.

But, since it is not part of the Trust itself, the Trustees can recommend and the membership can approve changes ( amend or temporarily  suspend parts) to that
document following the same procedure that was used to implement it in 2003 and to amend it in 2008. Of course, these should not be frivolous or occur willy nilly as the wind blows but serve a positive definite temporary purpose.

It should be understood that this grant to Gamble is separate and not part of the project funding for 2011. There was money left this year as we had only two applications for grants and membership voted in favor of both. Raffles, pick-a-party and other events will be held to allow grants for 2011.

A vote will be taken at the general meeting in May. Mary Jane Tapp was of great help to us when considering this gift and how to go about making it work.

    A Request For Flowers

Your June Luncheon Committee is happily collaborating with the Los Altos Golf and Country Club to make WEDNESDAY, June 2, a fine gathering.  As we focus on Gamble Garden's 25th Anniversary year, the committee is planning to create centerpieces reflecting Miss Gamble's garden and the pleasure she took in sharing her garden's bounty with neighbors and friends.

To that end we are asking Garden Club members to clip some of their finest roses - and greens - to be used in our table arrangements:

Roses - grandiflora, floribunda, spray, shrub and climbers - all colors
Greens - fern, myrtle, pitosporum, camellia leaves, fatshedera or English ivy (tips only),or your favorite filler

If you sense that some of your roses will be available the first of June and that you would be willing to share, please call or email Lee Newman, Mary Jo Hossfeld or Mary Grace Bertsch.  We will be DELIGHTED to hear from you.

DELIVERY DATE:  Tuesday, June 1, 8:00 AM to NOON

Please put roses and greens in disposable containers on the front porch of Lee Newman's
     house at:
1256 Martin Avenue, PA - (between Center and Lincoln)

                                                       Many thanks !

Conservation News:

April showers have brought out some amazing May flowers and the Natives are going crazy !

To see some beautiful flowering plants, including natives, in local gardens, you might want to take in the Open Days Program of the Garden Conservancy happening in our area May 15th.

The Garden Conservancy is a national organization with a mission to preserve exceptional American gardens for public education and enjoyment. They seek to develop and deepen public appreciation of gardens as integral elements of our national artistic and cultural heritage. The Open Days Program serves as the primary educational outreach for the Conservancy and is a major component of their mission.

The Open Days Program is essentially a series of private garden tours around the country that begins in early spring and continues through the fall of each year. Each summer, gardeners are invited by local Regional Representatives to become Garden Hosts and agree to open their garden during a scheduled Open Day (or several days) in their area. The Open Days are self-guided tours. Visitors decide which garden they want to visit and in what order. Simply show up at the garden during the times indicated and pay at the gate. There are no rain dates for these tours.

The following paragraph is a description of a garden that will be open for touring on May 15th, from 10am to 4pm, at  88 Mercedes Lane in Atherton:

"This beautiful suburban garden is blessed with magnificent specimen camellias, rhododendrons, and a myriad of spectacular trees: heritage oaks, rare horsechestnut, giant persimmon, two types of edible apple, crabapple, dogwood, hawthorne and flowering cherry, to name a few. Landscape designer Kristin Davis recently refurbished the garden to emphasize seasonal bloom, year-round interest, and increased privacy. Follow the reconstructed decomposed granite path through the rose walk to the generous back lawn area bordered by a sinuous brick edging. Discover the edible garden area, which contains fig, blueberry, pomegranate, and several varieties of citrus trees. Continue along the path to the first of two outdoor living/dining areas with a large pergola entwined with a glorious mature Banksia rose. The solar heated pool reflects this active family's environmental awareness. Lastly, pause for a moment of quiet reflection on the oak and Japanese maple shaded deck, the perfect place to retreat and relax."

There will be three more gardens open for touring on this day as well:

Moorshead Ranch in Woodside, a private garden in Woodside, and a private garden in Los Altos.

(see:

www.gardenconservancy.org   for more descriptions, information and directions.)

There is a $5 admission fee per person per garden that you may pay in cash or check at the entrance of each Open Day garden. Open Days are rain or shine. Gardens are beautiful in the rain!

Proceeds from the Open Days Program support the national preservation work of the Garden Conservancy such as the rehabilitation of the gardens on Alcatraz Island, as well as local nonprofit organizations designated by our garden hosts.

... And the natives are going crazy at the annual Spring Native plant sale of the California Native Plant Society held at Hidden Villa Ranch in Los Altos Hills :

Saturday, May 1, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Free. NO PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Find scores of species of hard-to-find native plants, seeds, and bulbs suitable for California gardens. Speak to experts about lawn alternatives such as native perennials, wildflowers, and grasses. You'll be able to buy native plant books, posters, and note cards. Organized by California Native Plant Society (Santa Clara Valley Chapter). Come early for the best selection; bring boxes in which to carry purchases home. Cash or check only. For more information, visit

www.cnps-scv.org , email CNPS_scv@yahoo.com , or call (650) 941-1068. 10% of proceeds will benefit Hidden Villa. ( www.hiddenvilla.org  )

I went to their fall sale and learned that arriving early is your best bet. This has become a very popular event and the crowds will be there.

See you there !!!

                                                    Field Trip Update!

Our Field Trip to the coast on Tuesday, May 11, is ready to go. Louise and Lilo retraced our route on April 9, and were stunned to see the beauty that the rain and some warmer weather have produced. We are in for a real treat!

To recap, we will go first to the Arboretum at U.C. Santa Cruz, which specializes in plants for Mediterranean climates from the southern hemisphere and California. Docents will give us a tour. Next we will go to Sierra Azul Nursery and Gardens, which also specializes in plants for California's Mediterranean climate and has two acres of demonstration gardens where we will have lunch. Next door is Rosendale Nursery, a wholesale grower. Last we will visit Robin Stockwell's SucculentGardens, a wholesale producer of succulents, cactus and drought-tolerant plants. The variety of form and color and the vigorous health of these plants is incredible! If you are tempted to purchase plants on this trip, on May 18 Robin Stockwell is coming to GambleGarden to give a class on "How to Care for your Succulents", so fear not!

We will leave at 9:00 am sharp, from the tennis courts at the corner of Hopkins and Newell, across from the ArtCenter (where the Garden Club meets). You will see the bus! We will be home by 5:00 pm, maybe a little earlier. Please try to arrive around 8:45 or earlier so we can leave by 9:00. Carpool if you can!

We have a bathroom on the bus; water will be provided; wear comfortable clothing and shoes; and be prepared for some uneven terrain and lots of sun. Sunscreen and a Hat are recommended. Bring cash or checks (not credit cards) to purchase plants and gifts. We should have a wonderful day!

We have a few seats left. E-mail Louise at ldbeattie@comcast.net if you want to join us.

        Wanted:  Garden Club Members

Who:  Anyone with a sense of humor, who enjoys time with other members, has something to share, wants to learn more about the club and/or wants to learn how this fabulous organization gets things done.

What:  To chair a committee in which you have interest and become a member of the Board of Directors

Why:  To share your strengths, skills and time for the good of the club

When:  For one year, roughly June 2010-June 2011

How: Nominate yourself!

Yes, the Garden Club officers have been elected (thank you very much) but most of the real wonderful work of the club is accomplished by our committees and they each need a leader or two. Luckily, several committee chairs have agreed to continue in their office.  At press time, we are looking for chairs for:  Conservation, Hospitality, Nominating, Member Garden Tours, June Luncheon, Publicity, Fundraising (a new committee) and for one person to join Carol Malcolm as Gamble Liaison (a two year term).  How about you? Got questions?  Find out about the committee by contacting the current chair or co-chair (listed in the Membership Handbook) or either of us. We're waiting for your e-mail or phone call!!!!

We have lost Garden Club Associate Member Lorraine Taylor. She is remembered fondly as a willing worker at Holiday Affaire. During the year before that event in preparation for her move to the Hyatt, Lorraine made a number of very generous donations of lovely things from her home in Sharon Heights for "From Our House to Your House". She was Jeanette Phelps's neighbor.

Voting for 2010 Project Funding took place at the Garden Club's general meeting on April 6th.  Ninety-four active members voted on two projects recommended by the Board and the Project Funding Committee.  Both projects, with grants totaling $3,350, were approved.  Following are the grant recipients, the grant amounts, and the Yes votes shown in parenthesis:

Canopy                                     $2,000                       (94 Yes votes)

Gamble Garden                         $1,350                       (93 Yes votes)

Our community's creative hub-- the Palo Alto Art Center-- wishes to extend a special thanks to the Garden Club membership for the opportunity to share our plans to transform our outdated facility.
