BlessI grew up in northeastern Wisconsin, where most of my family still lives. My mom is 87 years old and lives alone in a 2,500 square foot home that sits on an acre-and-a-half lawn. She has lived there for 44 years, so needless to say it requires a lot of maintenance.

I grew up in northeastern Wisconsin, where most of my family still lives. My mom is 87 years old and lives alone in a 2,500-square-foot home that sits on an acre-and-a-half lawn. She has lived there for 44 years, so needless to say it requires a lot of maintenance.

Though most my adult life I have lived hours from home, I do my best to return twice a year to keep the house up. I have learned a lot experimenting on my parents home. I can still hear my father's instruction when I feel I'm in over my head, "Just stand back and think about it. You can figure it out." And usually I can.

On my recent trip this past month, I repaired windows, replaced a dishwasher, and did other minor upkeep. However it did require a weeks vacation and 10-hour days. It would have been easy, even natural to feel sorry for myself. Someone could help me. If others would just help, we could knock it out quickly. Maybe we could pay someone to do this, then I could have some much needed downtime.

Isn't it funny how serving others sounds so good, till we have to do it? We sign up. We volunteer. We make promises. Then, so often we find reasons why we can't help, why we can't give up some of our precious time.

At Zion, we are all about serving others; serving people we don't know; giving of our time and skills to show the love of Christ; lifting a rake and wiping window. I sincerely believe if a Christ follower feels spiritually stuck, it is usually directly linked to a gap in personal, sacrificial service to others.

To be honest, I enjoy going home and serving my mom. I enjoyed it when my dad was alive and I still find it to be one of the most fulfilling two weeks of my year. I feel that same way when I serve beside you; handing food out to the hungry; working with Christian organizations, or simply buying school supplies for children in need.

I pray that Zion will be known as the church that loves people and it is evident by what we say and how we serve.

Do You Have a Plan?
Pastor Rudy Grecco

In Matthew 8:35, Scripture reads, "Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness."  Wow!! Can you take a mental picture of that? No car, no train, no plane...just a lot of foot work and an occasional donkey.

But Jesus had a plan! And that plan required Him to find hurting people within the sphere of His influence to bring to them what no one else could provide--a personal touch that would change their lives!!

He saw and encountered people who were distressed, downcast and scattered like sheep with no shepherd. He then announces that there is a tremendous need (HARVEST) out there but not enough workers!

Things haven't changed much since Jesus' day.  The needs of our communities are huge, and many times we are the only ones that can touch them with the spiritual truths they need to bring change into their lives. It doesn't take much: a kind word, a helping hand, a smile, even a simple meal, and who knows what the results will be.

Put a simple plan together today.  Go ahead - give it a try.  The blessings will astound you.

My Best Friend
Cheryl Newell

Eleven years my senior, she was my encourager, protector, and confidant; truly a best friend.  She was at my side for my wedding. She comforted my infant daughter when she was sick, and she was there through many other times of joy and pain. However, the last time we spoke was 23 years ago. When we parted, it was with a sense of great sadness and betrayal.

Through the years, I often thought of her, prayed for her and deeply missed our friendship.  Then recently, through the wonder of Facebook, I was able to find some of her family members, but they seemed disinterested in my pursuit. My hope faded.

Then one day, I got the call that I longed for but had given up on! After she identified herself, her next words were "Are you still a Christian?" As she continued, her voice was like a balm to my soul. She echoed my experiences as she spoke of her adult children and grandchildren with tenderness.  Hers was a story about a life not wasted.  As she continued, her growth in Christ was clearly evident. I hope mine was as well.

As I reflect on our conversation (one of many, I hope), I am touched by the goodness of our God!  Over the years I have had the gift of many friendships. Some come and go, and some come back again.  But there is a friend who never leaves or betrays. When we abandon hope for ourselves or others, He never does.  When we choose to forgive, He frees us to be whole and can restore relationships. Even through our greatest adversity, He will work all things together for our good. His name is Jesus, and He is my confidant, my encourager and my best friend.
