Driver's Beware: School Opens August 25th |

Kids are on their way back to school, which means more children will be on the streets traveling to and from school every day. The safety of children as pedestrians is a real concern. Each year, approximately 626 child pedestrian fatalities occur, and over 32,000 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for pedestrian-related injuries. 83 percent of child pedestrian deaths occur at non-intersection locations. Other than in the street, driveways, parking lots and on sidewalks, are where young children suffer the highest number of injuries as pedestrians. The maturity level of a child under 10 years of age makes him/her unable to correctly gauge the speed of vehicles putting them at greater risk for injury and death. With these types of statistics, driver's need to become more aware of their surroundings while operating a motor vehicle. Parents can help; by teaching their children to use crosswalks, cross at intersections or with a crossing guard, and wear light colored clothing, or have something that is reflective attached so that drivers can see them. Children should always walk with someone, if under the age of 10 it should be an adult. In addition to traffic safety, fear of bullies or strangers lurking in our neighborhoods is cause for concern. By encouraging children to walk in groups accompanied by adults, the risk of danger is decreased in these situations as well. Please watch out for children walking to school and at bus stops. |

Does Your Child Know the Sound of a Smoke Alarm?
Children younger than age 7 are more vulnerable to smoke and flames in a fire, less likely to wake up if a smoke alarm sounds while they're sleeping and have a hard time escaping a burning home by themselves. Learn more about teaching children how to escape a home fire at safekids.org. |
