Plaster or Drywall?

Until the late 1950s, most residential construction relied on metal or wood lath and plaster as the basic interior wall covering.  Then came drywall, or sheetrock, which began to displace plaster due to its lower cost and relative ease of installation, particularly in mass-produced residential tract developments and multi-family dwellings.  Today, although drywall is virtually ubiquitous, we are pleased to see plaster making a comeback--even among the cost-conscious.  That's because thin-wall plaster has been able to capitalize on the speed and cost benefits of drywall, while retaining the timeless look and superior durability of plaster.

While traditional plaster was a bulky application applied over wood, thin-wall plaster is applied to gypsum board that has been coated with a compound that quickens adhesion.  Thus, in a single step, thin-wall avoids both the bulk and expense of traditional plaster as well as the multiple mud-and-sanding applications of drywall.  Thin-wall also retains plaster's flexibility: rounded corners, arched doorways, corner fireplaces, and textured wall surfaces are all well-suited to plaster's fluidity.

Plaster gives a custom, hand-crafted look and feel, preferred by many over the monotonous flatness of drywall.  It can be applied with various finishes-smooth, rustic, or "cat's paw."  It can be painted after setting, or stained while wet and then applied.  It is especially conducive to faux finishes--particularly those that attempt to mimic age.  "If you wanted, you could set plaster to make it as wet-looking and shiny as marble," says master plasterer Ray Lara.

We estimate that thin-wall plaster costs about one-half again the cost of drywall.  We think it's an expense well worth making in the timeless appeal of your home.

Project of the Month
John and Jackie Janofsky Beach House

When the time came to remodel their Padaro Lane beach house, John and Jackie Janofsky were unsure how to get what they wanted.  They knew they wanted to open up their view of the ocean and create a more spacious feeling throughout-particularly in the main living room, dining room, and kitchen area.  They knew they wanted to update all of the fixtures and appliances and bring the building up to code. They thought a fireplace and built-in bookshelves would be nice.  But they didn't know how to convert what they had into the house they imagined.  And, as out-of-town clients, they were uncertain whom to turn to for help.  Worse, they were apprehensive about trusting a contractor when they wouldn't be able to oversee the work on a daily--or even weekly--basis.  They asked Santa Barbara friends and family to  recommend a designer and were referred to Jerry Goodman, of Ketzel and Goodman.  From there, the other members of the team fell into place.

"Jerry led us to Micheal Parks Construction, and Micheal took very good care of us," says John Janofsky. "He gave us a spreadsheet every two weeks, which detailed expenditures and where we were in the construction process.  That made a big difference.  It really helped us to see, especially since we couldn't be there, where the money was going and how the project was coming along.  He also made himself available to us at night and on weekends, which was great for us as out-of-town clients because we were so often unsure of what was happening.  And of course the quality of his work is exceptional."

In the end, not a single room of the Janofskys' original residence remained unchanged.  The work included opening up the entire beach-facing end of the house to create a glassed-in living room, dining room, kitchen area; sacrificing a bedroom to expand the three remaining bedrooms and accommodate a third bath; adding a fireplace, hardwood floors and built-in bookshelves to the living room, and updating the kitchen and all of the baths.  The front entry approach was reconfigured and the entire house was repainted.

As the job neared completion, Susan Wennerstrom was brought in to provide the finishing touches that make a house a home.  "Now that the house is done, you can't tell the problems we were having making up our minds," says Jackie Janofsky.  "So much of pulling a house together requires decision-making on a thousand details.  We found ourselves becoming ambivalent, and vacillating on what should be done. But Susan knew what would look good and stuck to it. And she was right. The house looks great."

Artisan of the Month
Raymond Lara of Raymond Lara Plastering
 Raymond Lara
What makes a good   artisan great?  Often it's the seeming effortlessness with which the artisan gets the job done.  That's the case with master plasterer Ray Lara.  He makes his work look effortless, seamless, timeless.  From graceful sconces that seem to have grown organically from the wall, to arched doorways, voluptuous fireplace surrounds and even stove hoods, Ray Lara does things with plaster that just aren't possible with other materials--or executed by less accomplished plasterers.

With more than 30 years of experience, Mr. Lara has contributed his masterful work to many of our projects, including this month's featured residence, the Janofsky beach house on Padaro Lane, where he built the fireplace surround.  "I enjoy working on jobs designed by Jerry Goodman.  He often needs specialty work, which is what I like to do.  It's a challenge, and that's what's fun--figuring out how to get it done."
Designer of the Month
Susan Wennerstrom, W Designs

Susan Wennerstrom, owner of W Designs, is a breath of fresh air in the design world.  Her great sense of style is matched by the joy she brings to her work.  She is routinely applauded for her ability to envision a room, solve design problems on the fly, work within a budget, and create pleasing, comfortable spaces designed for living, not just for magazines spreads.

Noted architectural designer Jerry Goodman appreciates her "classic, traditional, understated taste.  She never goes over the top."  We like the fact that she's so easy to work with.  She understands the construction process and works collaboratively with us and her clients.  She was the interior designer on this month's featured project, the Janofsky beach house.

In contrast to designers who use their clients' money to execute their own visions, Susan's goal is to have her "work reflect my clients' wishes and desires.  I believe the biggest compliment a homeowner can receive is when people walk into their house and say, 'Oh, this house reminds me of you.' That is the goal. I want the house to reflect them."
