Greetings!

Below is: An update on PortSide; our work on behalf of OpSail; how to visit tall ships, foreign navy and Coast Guard ships in Red Hook, Brooklyn, on Memorial Day Weekend!

PortSide has created a guide to the ships and how to make a day of it in Red Hook and the Columbia Waterfront District. See below for links and details.

Visit 10 ships, Red Hook Marine Terminal, Memorial Day weekend

PortSide decided to spend last week doing what we do so well:   promoting ships and waterfront events and creating buzz.

LA BELLE POULE of FrancePortSide stepped up to promote OpSail and nearby Brooklyn: We are spreading the word that 10 ships will be open to the public in the Red Hook MarUSCG cutter SENECAine Terminal (more than at the other 2 sites), revving up the local community to provide business promotions and special events, and promoting the Red Hook-Columbia Waterfront neighborhoods near the ships.

JS SHIRANE, JapanThe ship array is particularly diverse because OpSail teamed up with the US Navy to celebrate the bicentennial of the war of 1812 and the writing of the "Star Spangled Banner." This has lead to flotilla of tall ships and navy ships, domestic and foreign.

Over the week, PortSide created a guide to the 10 ships in Brooklyn and a webpage with all the info you need: the parade of ships on Wednesday, May 23, how to visit the Red Hook ships over Memorial Day weekend, how to get here, and suggestions on how to make a day of it in the Columbia Waterfront and Red Hook neighborhoods.

PortSide promo of OpSail 2012 Red HookPortSide asked the genius of NYC harbor illustration, Christina Sun of the blog Bowsprite, to help spread the word about OpSail in Red Hook by creating a flyer for store windows and easy emailing. You can download the result here and please share it!  Thank you Christina/Bowsprite!

Gantry cranes, steeple, sunsetPortSide also created the first-ever  visitor guide to the Columbia Street Waterfront District, where the mini maritime museum in our Pop-Up is located at 145 Columbia Street. The Columbia guide will go live by Memorial Day weekend. We seek sponsors for this guide; if you are interested, email us here.

We seek volunteers for an OpSail tourist info table and our Pop-Up museum. If you are interested, email us here.

Update on our endeavors & support
We extended our 4/30 deadline due to promising leads

PortSide continues seeking a home for the MARY A. WHALEN and is in discussion with several sites.  Please sign the petition to support our getting a new home here.

Media coverage
PortSide has again attracted international coverage. After reading the recent New York Times article about PortSide, the BBC international tourism program Fast Track spent Monday morning with us. The BBC is shooting a feature on "the rejuvenation of NYC's waterfront." The other harbor voices they interviewed were Regina Myer, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park and Michael Marrella, Director, Waterfront and Open Space Division of the Department of City Planning. The show is due to air mid-June, look for an upcoming link here.

Look at that park pier!

Yesterday (at left), Hudson River Park Pier 25 was an example of how a NYC park pier should look!:    Lots of boats; four historic ships in a row! From the offshore end of pier they are: Picton Castle, Waterfront Museum Barge LEHIGH VALLEY 79 with Tug PEGASUS alongside, and steamer LILAC.
