UT Housing Shows Creativity Through Fundraising Efforts

UT Housing 2008

When it comes to fundraising creativity, the residence halls at The University of Tennessee have earned the grade of A+.

UT Housing, which consists of staff, graduate students, hall directors, resident assistants and, of course, the residents themselves, stage creative competitions and events that raise a surprising amount of money to build homes as a Covenant Partner with Knoxville Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteer Spotlight: Amy Oprea

Amy OpreaAmy Oprea's life story is like one of the novels she loves to read.

Amy is a quiet and unassuming woman who works nearly unnoticed to the public, behind the scenes at our Thrift Store, where she logs 40+ hours a week sorting and racking all of the clothing and accessory donations that come into the store.

But for those people who know her or who spend a few minutes talking with her, you quickly find out that she is a very hard-working mother of 10 who has overcome a lot of adversity in her 48 years.

KHFH Donates Land Formerly
Part of Underground Railroad

Underground Railroad

Knoxville history enthusiasts take note: Knoxville Habitat for Humanity recently helped to preserve an important element in the city's black heritage by donating land once used as a station on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves on their way to Kentucky and Ohio.

Knoxville Habitat for Humanity donated the historical parcel at 1021 Fuller Avenue, as well as an adjoining parcel at 614 McConnell Ave., to the Tennessee Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, which originally owned the land that housed a church where they operated the Underground Railroad location.

The Year In Pictures: Our 2010 Homes

Women Build 2010 House

What an exciting end to another fantastic year of building simple, decent and affordable homes in Knox County. In 2010 we dedicated a total of 22 new houses -- in addition to refurbishing two other houses through funding available through the Neighborhood Stabilization program.

In Pictures: 400th House Blitz Build

Christina Upton Blitz BuildIn last month's Green & BluePrints, we shared the exciting news of blitzing Knoxville Habitat for Humanity's 400th house and introduced you to new homeowner-to-be Christina Upton.

The weather was cold on blitz day, but the rain held off, so the volunteers were able to get the walls and trusses of Christina's house up, along with most of the roof decking. Enjoy this gallery of photos from the 400th house blitz day. And thank you to all the volunteers who came out to hammer!

Letter from the Chief Development Officer: Thank You!

Thank You

All year long, we ask you for your support for our mission and ministry, and you have consistently stepped up to offer it.

As we conclude this, our 25th anniversary year, my colleagues and I just want to take a moment to give you something instead:  our deepest thanks

CED Chili Cookoff Event a Slam "Dunk" for Knoxville Habitat for Humanity

CED Chili Cook Off

A great big thank you to Consolidated Electrical Distribution (CED), one of our trusted vendors AND our neighbor in the Parkridge community, for raising $120 for Knoxville Habitat for Humanity during their 2010 Customer/Vendor Appreciation event on November 17.

In addition to CED vendors exhibiting their goods and services, the event featured a chili cook-off and a giant dunk tank. For $1 each throw, event attendees took turns dropping CED employees into the giant tank of water when their ball hit the bullseye.

Santa Comes Ho-Ho-Home to the
Thrift Store December 21 and 22

Santa ImageSanta is making his list and checking it twice ... and he'll be at our Thrift Store this month to see if you've been naughty or nice.

We hope you will drop by to see Santa and have your picture made with him between noon and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21 or Wednesday, December 22.

And perhaps while you are at it, you can take care of some last-minute holiday gifts by perusing the many treasures found in our store. We hope to see you then!
