Dear Knoxville Habitat for Humanity Supporter:

You will notice some exciting changes with this month's issue of the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity newsletter. Most notably, we have given the newsletter a name: Greeen & BluePrints.

The new moniker is a three-way play on words:
1.) Green and Blue are the Habitat colors
2.) BluePrints are used to build our houses
3.) "Prints" honors the newsletter tradition.

We hope you enjoy the March issue of the e-newsletter. And, of course, your comments, feedback and story ideas are always welcome.
Financial Milestone:
Family Pays Off Mortgage 7 Years Early

"Having credit is better than not having credit -- and having good credit is better than having bad credit. So pay your bills on time."

Those are the words of wisdom that Knoxville Habitat for Humanity homeowner Emanuel Dixson's mother instilled in him.

And he listened. On February 19, while on a two-week leave from his Army duties in Iraq, Dixson paid off the mortgage on his house seven years ahead of schedule.

In early 1985, a small, but intrepid group of civic leaders in the Knox County community met to discuss forming a local affiliate of a revolutionary new concept for low-income housing.

Unlike many similar programs being touted at that time, this one was truly unique: Homes would be built using volunteer labor, thereby greatly reducing their cost.  More importantly, the homes would be sold - not given away - with zero-interest mortgages, and each homeowner family would have to provide "sweat equity" in lieu of a traditional down payment.

Led by a tenacious individual nicknamed "Sis," this band of forward-thinking community activists gave birth to Knoxville Habitat for Humanity 25 years ago.

The Knoxville Women Build Initiative has committed to constructing a Women Build house in partnership with Knoxville Habitat every two years, beginning in June 2010.

On June 5th, we will kick off our fourth Knoxville Habitat for Humanity Women Build house in a two-week blitz build.
