The National Weather Service (NWS) Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) is truly the Nation's weather and climate observing network of, by and for the people. More than 11,000 volunteers take observations on farms, in urban and suburban areas, National Parks, seashores, and mountaintops. ARkStorm:

Navigating Atmospheric Rivers
First Friday Lecture

Oct. 7, Friday, 7:30pm-9:30pm
* Location: State Theater, 985 Lincoln Way Auburn, CA 95603

Dale Alan Cox, USGS Regional Hazards Coordinator and Project Manager of the Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project will discuss ARkStorm, a hypothetical, though scientifically plausible California storm scenario based in part on the Great California storms of 1861-62. An ARkStorm could be California's next "Big One." Join Cox to learn what we know about atmospheric rivers which cause these "superstorms" and how we might predict one and have information that can help prepare us for when the rain doesn't stop. Stay afterwards for an intimate question & answer period as well as a raffle of local goods and services! Presenters will also be available after for personal introductions.
Takes place rain or shine!
Members, Students & Roseville residents (with ID) $9/person,

Astronomy & Stargazing
Oct 8 Saturday, 6:30pm-8:30pm

Do you have an interest in astronomy? Feed your wonder and answer your questions about the heavens! Colfax astronomer Don Machholz, author and comet-hunter, will weave tales of the galaxies and explore the night sky with his telescopes. Instruction is given using binoculars and telescopes. Pre-registration is requested.

Spooky Critters

Adventures in Nature!
Oct. 9, Sunday, 1:00pm-4:00pm

Come see the spooky critters shares by Angie Raskin from Life Cycle Celebrations. Have some Pre-halloween fun! Spiders and walking sticks and tarantulas - oh my! Angie will share their life cycles and special features to make them seem not so spooky but very special in the places they live from California to around the world. Come check out these exotics.
Takes place rain or shine! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic lunch.
Nature Shop open.

Our Day Outside! (0-5 Yrs): 

Leafy Adventures!
Oct. 15, Saturday, 9:30am-11:30am

Explore, wiggle, sing, hike, do crafts and more with your 0-5 year old child. Both you and your child will engage in nature play to aid in your child's physical, mental and emotional development. You will learn techniques and strategies to continue the fun at home! Class made possible by a grant from Placer First 5. *Spanish interpreter is always in attendance!

Discover Nature with Young Children:

Spiders & Bats
Oct. 19, Thursday, 6:30pm-8:30pm

Early Childhood educators and caregivers will learn how to weave nature themes into all your activities - support reading, math, science and physical exercise. these dynamic two-hour sessions present and demonstrate "nature play" in Early Childhood Education to help build school readiness skills through nature exploration. After learning all about the benefits, you get to use hands-on tools and receive inspirational ideas to facilitate nature study both indoors and out.

Certificate of participation, 2 hours of professional growth.

Harvest Festival & Spooktacular Nature Night

Oct. 22, Saturday, 3PM - 7PM
A not so spooky Nature Night offers a fun, safe and educational Halloween alternative
Trick or treat the Sequoia Nature Trail (wheelchair and stroller accessible), watch a magic show, paint pumpkins, join the costume and howling contest and more!
Great for ages 0-10, Nature Shop open.
Free to members, General Admission is $3/person.

My Lunch and the Landfill Homeschool class

Nov. 2, Wednesday, 10am-12 Grades K-5 

Can you make a no-garbage lunch? hat happens to leftovers and lunch packaging? What can you do to live a no-garbage life! 

Registration is requested for materials. Takes place rain or shine! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic lunch. Nature Shop open. $7/student 

 

Food Safety & Sustainable Agriculture - First Friday Lecture 

Nov. 4, Friday, 7:30pm-9:30pm 

* Location: State Theater, 985 Lincoln Way Auburn, CA 95603 

Liz Spence from The Nature Conservancy will present on sustainable landscapes. Her main focus will be the issues with recent litigation involving agriculture and food safety and its detrimental affects on the wildlife and the environment. 

 Members, Students & Roseville residents (with ID) $9/person, General Admission $12. Season Pass and bulk ticket discounts available!

 

Maidu Storytelling

Adventures in Nature! 

Nov. 13, Sunday, 1:00pm-4:00pm 

Storytelling starts at 1:30 PM 

Joyce Bowling, a storyteller of Native American tales, will take families through history and the local Maidu culture. Afterwards Joyce will demonstrate pineneedle basket making and the children will get to try making cordage. Docents will be available to talk with families about the nature center's Maidu exhibit and other interactive activities. Come experience the Maidu lifestyle and how the Sierra foothills and woodlands supplied food, shelter, medicine and clothing. Takes place rain or shine! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic lunch. Nature Shop open. 

Free to members, General Admission is $3/person.
