Rockin' with Rocks
Adventures in Nature! Sep. 11, Sunday, 1:00pm-4:00pm In this interactive hands-on program we share rocks and minerals and discuss the differences, the three types of rocks, how they are formed, and talk about the rock cycle. A wide assortment of specimens will be for a hands on experience and use of lighted jewelers loupes to study the specimens. Each child will "dig' for and identify rocks to take home! Special guest: Angie Raskin from Life Cycle Celebrations. Takes place rain or shine! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic lunch. Nature Shop open. Free to members, General Admission is $3/person.
Docent Training Sep. 13-24, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9am-12pm Learn, teach and have fun! Docent Training covers all Placer Nature Center's school programs from habitats to watershed to Maidu cultural. Our Day Outside! (0-5 Yrs): Seeds Abound! Sep. 17, Saturday, 9:30am-11:30am Explore, wiggle, sing, hike, do crafts and more with your 0-5 year old child. Both you and your child will engage in nature play to aid in your child's physical, mental and emotional development. You will learn techniques and strategies to continue the fun at home! Family Volunteer Day! Oct. 1, Saturday, 9:00am-2:00pm Bring the whole family (even the little ones!) out to the nature center to volunteer together. Share the feeling of doing good while spending quality time together. There will be things to do for people of all ages and abilities. Gloves and tools are provided for kids ages 3-14. Wear close-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dirty. Free event (of course), snacks and drinks provided. Takes place rain or shine! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic lunch. Nature Shop open.
ARkStorm:
Navigating Atmospheric Rivers First Friday Lecture Oct. 7, Friday, 7:30pm-9:30pm * Location: State Theater, 985 Lincoln Way Auburn, CA 95603 Dale Alan Cox, USGS Regional Hazards Coordinator and Project Manager of the Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project will discuss ARkStorm, a hypothetical, though scientifically plausible California storm scenario based in part on the Great California storms of 1861-62. An ARkStorm could be California's next "Big One." Join Cox to learn what we know about atmospheric rivers which cause these "superstorms" and how we might predict one and have information that can help prepare us for when the rain doesn't stop. Stay afterwards for an intimate question & answer period as well as a raffle of local goods and services! Presenters will also be available after for personal introductions. Takes place rain or shine! Members, Students & Roseville residents (with ID) $9/person, General Admission $12. Season Pass and bulk ticket discounts available!
Astronomy & Stargazing Oct 8 Saturday, 6:30pm-8:30pm Do you have an interest in astronomy? Feed your wonder and answer your questions about the heavens! Colfax astronomer Don Machholz, author and comet-hunter, will weave tales of the galaxies and explore the night sky with his telescopes. Instruction is given using binoculars and telescopes. Spooky Critters

Discover Nature with Young Children:
Spiders & Bats Oct. 19, Thursday, 6:30pm-8:30pm Early Childhood educators and caregivers will learn how to weave nature themes into all your activities - support reading, math, science and physical exercise. these dynamic two-hour sessions present and demonstrate "nature play" in Early Childhood Education to help build school readiness skills through nature exploration. After learning all about the benefits, you get to use hands-on tools and receive inspirational ideas to facilitate nature study both indoors and out. Information & Registration Takes place rain or shine at Placer County Office of Education. Certificate of participation, 2 hours of professional growth. Free program thanks to First 5 partnership.
Harvest Festival Oct. 22, Saturday, 3PM - 7PM A not so spooky Nature Night offers a fun, safe and educational Halloween alternative Trick or treat the Sequoia Nature Trail (wheelchair and stroller accessible), watch a magic show, paint pumpkins, join the costume and howling contest and more! Great for ages 0-10, Nature Shop open. Free to members, General Admission is $3/person.
