Creature Feature: Antlions and Doodlebugs
What do you know about antlions?
Most people have seen their homes, strange lttle holes in the ground to trap ants - these are actually an antlion nursery! The adult is thus rarely seen in the wild because it is typically active only in the evening. The larva's large pinchers make it resemble a creature from an alian movie, but are harmless to humans.
Campers' Photos on Display at the Auburn Art Walk!
Come see our summer campers' photos on display tonight, August 11th from 6-9 PM at Kids Closet in downtown Auburn. The photos were taken during Wild Child Outdoor Photo Camp that was hosted at the nature center in June. The Auburn Art Walk is a reception to showcase the artists who display their work in participating businesses. It is presented by PlacerArts to promote cultural tourism. It occurs on the second Thursday, four months of the year, from 6-9 p.m. in Downtown and Old Town Auburn. It is a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to become acquainted with local businesses and the art community. Refreshments are served at many of the venues. The artist's works remain on display for two months. Hope to see you there! Kids Closet, 948 B Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603
Upcycling is sooo in fashion!
Do you hate throwing away those non-recycable food pakcages? While we do not encourage buying food that comes in nonrecyclacble packaging, we know that sometimes it happens, so we are working with Earth It UP! This local non profit turns these items into amazing handbags to benefit local charities. Let's work together to make a difference in our community! Bring us your metalic food bags that are not recyclable and do not decompose (ex. chip bags or Caprisuns)! Don't bother washing tem as Earth it Up has a specail cleaning process. While you're at it, if you have any cans, bottles or anything with a CRV that can be recycled, bring them to the Placer Nature Center. We are collecting recyclables to help raise funds for next year's summer camp programs. These funds will create a scholarship for children whose families cannot afford to send them to camp because no child should be left inside!
