John Muir was an early proponent of a view we still hold today - that much of California was pristine, untouched wilderness before the arrival of Europeans. But, what Muir was really seeing when he admired the grand vistas of Yosemite and the gold and purple flowers carpeting the Central Valley were the fertile gardens of the Sierra Miwok and Valley Yokuts Indians. Join Dr. Don Hankins to learn how Native Americans were active agents of environmental change and stewardship through the use of fire.  Read more...

Winter Greens Naturalist-led Nature Walks
Saturday, January 9
11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
at PNC

Take a guided trail walk and discover what's green in winter at the Placer Nature Center. Many shrubs and trees in the foothills are evergreen, not losing their leaves in the winter like some of our deciduous oaks.

Here too, you'll see the seedlings of grasses, wildflowers and weeds through the mat of dry grasses from last spring. Perhaps you are looking for a native plant to grace your landscape offering year-around greenery, take this walk to see every stage. The moist winter forest floor will have many surprises not seen in other seasons like colorful fungus and the seedlings of flowers to come. Come and enjoy a winter walk to see what's green!

Pruning Workshop
Green Gardening with Master Gardeners
Saturday, January 30
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
at PNC

What goes and what stays?
Pruning, which has several definitions, essentially involves removing plant parts to improve the health, beauty or production of the plant. Properly trained and pruned trees will yield high quality fruit much earlier in their lives and live significantly longer. So put down the chain saw and learn when to prune, when not to prune and how. It's easier than you think and you will walk away with the confidence to properly care for your own garden!

The workshop is a free event brought to you in partnership with the UCCE Placer County Master Gardeners.
Naturally yours,

Founders Leslie and Linda, and all the docents, volunteers, and everyone at Placer Nature Center!
