Greetings!
Boy is it cold! It's a perfect time to bundle up, go
outside and check out the fall leaves. Or stay warm inside with a lecture on
the ever-changing climate, landscape and natural character of California! Check
out the events below, or always check the calendar of events on the web site.
Nature News:
Preserve the Colors of Fall:
All you need is a little bit of vegetable glycerin,
water, and newly cut branches with colorful leaves. Just put 1/2 teaspoon into
a vase full of water, stir, then add the branches. The leaves will keep their
color for weeks. Refresh the water and glycerin every week. Pure vegetable
glycerin is available in health food stores. Share your creations on our Flicker.com photo group!Write Greenly:Every year Americans discard 1.6 million pens.
Placed end to end, they would stretch 151 miles - equivalent to crossing the
state of Rhode Island almost four times! Read this report by Green Seal for environmental rating and recommended brands
of 15 pens, 20 pencils, three markers, and two crayons - as well as
information on recycled content, refillability, packaging and availability of
writing instruments. This report was published in 1998, but it's still
relevant.

Vote for your favorite school and help it win!
|
What could a school in your neighborhood do with
$20,000? How about $5,000? Or even just $500?
Teachers and school officials are amazingly creative when it comes to
stretching every dollar in their too-small budgets. So while only one school
will win the grand prize of $20,000 in our America's
Favorite School contest, every
week a randomly selected school wins $500. That's a meaningful
prize for any school in Sacramento. And we're giving $11,000 to the four
runners up.
The America's Favorite School contest is a
simple and fun way for communities to rally around their schools. If you're a
parent, then this is your chance to brag about your school and help your school
win money! If you're a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or community member, here's a
really easy way to pitch in to support a school.
