Greetings from all of us here in damp and busy Combermere!

Despite the unpredictable weather, it has not dampened the spirits of our beautiful brides and their guests and the gardens are ringing with the sound of laughter and gaiety as the wedding season is in full swing.

We are looking forward to a record year, and a busy and productive autumn, with lots of festivals and fun in the neighbourhood. Spurred on by our Olympic spirit, the fight to save the Abbey continues, so watch this space!

The Abbey
Library Restoration update

More exciting historic discoveries in our quest to restore this magnificent room! Recent research undertaken by paint guru Helen Hughes has uncovered some fascinating information. The Abbot's Dais Canopy dates back to the 16th century and is extremely rare, possibly the only one of its type still in situe and the ceiling design has been confirmed as 17th century not 19th as determined by Pevsner. Detailed research has indicated a number of different paint schemes ranging from the monastic period to the late 19th century.

Cameras Roll!!..

With the help of our photographer friend Paul Worpole and the beautiful work of other local photographers we are putting together a short video which will be put on the website.. Pictures do speak a thousand words, and the beauty of the environment here and the breadth of what is on offer is so difficult to do justice with words or still photos. Look out for it - due in the next couple of weeks!

Community spirit..

This summer Combermere staff supported two local initiatives:  One of 39 teams, the 'Slaughtered Monks of Combermere Abbey' (AKA the gardens team) won the community team prize running two miles around Dearnford Lake. And Ashleigh Taylor in Weddings, coordinated 'James and the Giant Bike ride' from Lands End to John o'Groats raising over 23K for Cystic Fibrosis.

Farewell ..

We sadly say goodbye to Patrick Driscall, our head gardener who leaves this month to go the National Botanical Garden of Wales. The beautiful condition of the gardens at Combermere are a testament to his hard work and dedication. Also leaving in September is Serena Cowell, the Event Sales Manager responsible for the weddings team. Best of luck and keep in touch.

Hello..

We welcome Phil Tatler as Head Gardener after working at Trentham Gardens, Scampston Hall and Eaton Hall. He will be introduced to the busy Combermere life! In the gardens team, Claire Howard, our recent WRAGS student has joined us full time infecting us with her enthusiasm and smiley face! The appointment of a new head of the Weddings Team is imminent so watch this space! And finally, Jeanette Miller returns after maternity leave to resume as Head of Operations in September.
