Attention Schools: Have You Considered the Community Eligibility Option? 

New for school year 2012-2013, schools with a certain percentage of students directly certified for free school meals can serve universally free meals to all students.  Also referred to as Provision 4, the Community Eligibility Option (CEO) is a new meal claiming option for schools.  Contact your child nutrition representative at NYSED to apply.  

Celebrate the 2nd Annualsfsp sun National Summer Food Service Program Week!

 

This week (June 11-15) marks the 2nd annual National Summer Food Service Program Kick Off Week!

   

The USDA will be celebrating and sharing SFSP information through Twitter (@USDANutrition), blogs (http://blogs.usda.gov/), and a variety of National Summer Food Service Program kick-off events throughout the country.

Getting ready for the summer food season?  Check out these new resources and materials:
 
Healthy Summers for Kids: Turning Risk Into Opportunity: The National Summer Learning Association released a report detailing emerging research about obesity in children over the summer.  

Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation, 2012: A survey from the Food Research and Action Center of how states are connecting kids to summer nutrition.  Data shows that despite the increased participation in other federal nutrition programs, national SFSP participation has decreased. 

New online site locator map for New York State! The New York State Education Department now has meal sites online.  Please note: sites are still being added for summer 2012.   

Outreach materials now online: Browse our customizable templates for promoting your summer food program.  Read through a list of suggested ways your school or organization can spread the word about summer meals.

Visit the School Breakfast Resources section of our website to download breakfast survey/assessment tools and a new factsheet documenting the dramatic increase in breakfast participation when serving breakfast in the classroom. 

Legislative Look: Federal and State Updates    


Earlier this month, Governor Cuomo signed legislation that officially changed the name of the Food Stamp Program to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in New York State.  Stay tuned for further details!

Senator Gillibrand has been working hard to both restore proposed cuts to SNAP and provide extra funding for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program in the upcoming Farm Bill.  For more information, visit FRAC's website and watch a video of Senator Gillibrand speaking out against child hunger
