3D is coming to a living room near you.
3D TV was by far the most visible new technology at CES this year: It dominated the show and the coverage. There was a lot of good news coming from the show about 3D technology. Nearly every TV maker had a 3D demonstration, and the vast majority of them plan to bring "3D-ready" sets to market by the next holiday season. Most of the standards required for 3D are starting to get settled, including a standard for storing 3D material on Blu-ray and for connecting such new Blu-ray players to new TVs.
3D content is coming: We've all seen an increasing number of 3D movies, but it's still a relatively small amount of content, though increasing at a great pace. It looks like the industry has agreed to put out almost all these new 3D movies in 3D Blu-ray format in the next year, and that will provide a lot of content.
Add to that content from cable and satellite TV providers. ESPN has plans for a 3D network with programming including a lot of World Cup matches and the 2011 BCS Championship football game. DirecTV said it plans to offer three 3D channels this summer, including a pay-per-view service, as well as a deal with Panasonic to promote the service with the company's TVs. British satellite provider B Sky B plans to launch a channel this year. A consortium of Sony, Discovery Channel, and IMAX has announced a 3D-only channel, though it's not scheduled to launch for two years.
As Usual, Sony will be leading the way with this new technology, launching a new line of HDTV's in March and again in July. Audio Video Intelligence can answer any questions that you have regarding this new technology. 3D media is no longer that future, it is here! Do you have the proper equipment?

Crestron Releases V-Panel Touchpanels and DGE-1 Digital External Graphics Engine
New Line of HD Touchpanels and External Graphics Engine Now Available
Now shipping, the Crestron V-Panel is the industry's only full 1080p high definition touchpanel, and can function as both a touchpanel control interface and flat panel HD display. Featuring unique VESA mount installation in addition to desktop/tilt and flush wall mount options, V-Panels can be positioned virtually anywhere. V-Panels can integrate VoIP communications, embedded PC applications, USB-HID control and onscreen annotation, delivering a complete digital media, control and communication solution. With Crestron DigitalMedia™ connectivity, protected, uncompressed HD signals can be displayed on touchpanels for the first time.
The innovative design of the V-Panel achieves multiple advantages by separating the graphics engine hardware from the touchpanel display. The 12" (V12) and 15" widescreen (V15) can be driven by the DGE-1 or DGE-2 digital graphics engines, so panels and engines can be chosen independently to best suit the application. "Separating the graphics engine hardware from the display makes the V-Panel trim, lightweight and silent - no cooling fans are required," said Vincent Bruno, Crestron Director of Marketing. "Both V-Panel models are two inches deep, the thinnest available." Also, the DGE is typically installed at the central equipment location, dramatically simplifying its connection to the head end AV sources, switchers, and control network.
V-Panels feature gesture navigation, to view cover art and browse media playlists, or tap into applications such as Internet Explorer, to access Web pages and email. Native IP intercom can be leveraged to talk panel-to-panel with someone in another room, and the USB port provides direct connection to a keyboard and mouse (or wirelessly via an RF dongle) for efficient PC/Internet navigation right from the V-Panel location.
With connectivity including one composite or S-video input, the DGE-1 drives a single window, scalable display. The DGE-2 provides two fully-scalable video windows that support standard video, HDTV, high-resolution RGB/VGA, and protected HDMI/DVI and DisplayPort multimode, and with the built-in annotator, users can draw over moving or paused video images.
