2012 iREAD Catalog Reading Is So Delicious!
The PDF version of the 2012 iREAD catalog of delicious incentive products is now available on the ILA Web site.
Over the past 30 years, iREAD has grown to become a leader of Summer Reading Program development by providing libraries, large and small, with all of the resources they need to promote, launch, and execute great Summer Reading Programs.
To support your 2012 programming for Reading Is So Delicious! we have added even more full-color posters and a wealth of original graphics. The posters and the wonderful spot art were created by illustrators Barry Gott, Chris Eliopoulos, Lucy Knisley, and Patrick Girouard. All of these graphics are included on the 2012 Program Resource Guide CD-ROM.
While library budgets tighten, program attendance continues to reach record highs, indicating that our mission -- to promote the lasting and well-documented benefits of summer reading -- is timelier than ever.
Thank you for supporting iREAD!

New Membership Category for Consideration
Vote to Be Taken at the 2011 ILA Annual Conference | One of the goals of my presidency has been to make ILA more inclusive and attractive to all types of librarians and library supporters. To that end I proposed three changes to the ILA Executive Board, and received their approval to move forward. The first two of these require no change to the association's bylaws, as they are simply procedural changes, consistent with our mission. The purpose is to ensure that the board will always have at least one member representing academic librarianship, one representing special librarianship, one representing school librarianship, and one representing public librarianship. This will be addressed by the ILA Nominating Committee through the current system of "pairings" that require two candidates from the same "category," i.e., type of library, geography, racial or ethnic diversity, etc. for each of the designated seats up for election. The second proposal states that the presidency of the association will be rotated, with public librarians limited to serving two out of any three years.
The third proposal is to create a new membership category-Co-member of ILA-and will be made available to current Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) and Special Libraries Association-Illinois (SLA-IL) members. The rate will be $25 annually, and this personal member rate will be available for a five-year time period for an individual, after which time they would have to join at the full personal rate.
This final proposal requires a bylaw change (Article XI-Membership Dues) to be approved by two-thirds of the personal members present and voting at the annual meeting, with written notice at least three weeks but no more than 60 days prior to the meeting. The vote will be taken at the 2011 ILA Annual Conference Membership Meeting on Thursday, October 20, 2:15-4:00 p.m., Location: Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Grand Ballroom, Rooms 21-23, 32-34.
I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,

Gail Bush 2010-2011 Illinois Library Association President

| Top 10 Reasons to Attend This Year's ILA Conference in Rosemont in October
With thanks to our friends at the Wisconsin Library Association and WLA Publicity Chair Michael Kenney for letting us copy off our neighbors to the north!

 | | Paula Poundstone |
10. Well, for one thing, that's where it's located this year...scheesh! (Navy Pier is so "2010"...) 9. Visit the technology petting zoo and don't worry about stepping in something. 8. Laugh with Paula Poundstone at our closing session. She will explain why libraries are not quiet demure places where patrons are shushed by dusty, bun-balancing, bespectacled women.
7. Can you say Boopsie App? Try using your smart phone to learn everything there is to learn about the conference.
6. Our conference hotel, the acclaimed InterContinental Hotel...this ain't the Bates Motel, that's for sure! (Right, mother?) 5. Those wacky after hours parties playfully discussing whether Melville Dewey's hot new classification system really has a chance of catching on... (See 025.4 DEW) 4. Hey, anything to get out of the library...uh, I mean, anything you can do to increase your knowledge and skill sets when it comes to the latest trends in library science and serving your beloved patrons! 3. E-books, schmee-books...you want to learn about the next hot trend in publishing. 2. Drool over our author dinner speaker, Michael Cunningham, of The Hours fame. (You're a librarian...look it up.) 1. Be Bold, Brilliant and Brave -- see outstanding speakers and break-out sessions; brilliant insights into the latest trends in the industry; beautiful host hotel and convention center; career clinic and consulting sessions. Fabulous opportunities to meet with friends and peers; all this and more at an affordable rate! Starting January 1, 2012
ILA Will Administer the Fund for Illinois Libraries | The Illinois Library Systems requested and the ILA Executive Board approved that ILA administer the Fund for Illinois Libraries beginning in 2012. The next several months will be a transitional period intended to ensure continued access to vital donation dollars from corporations to Illinois libraries. If you have questions about this transition, please contact Amanda McKay at amanda@effinghamlibrary.org or (217) 342-2464, x 5.
As a way of increasing library funding, libraries often solicit funds from the general public, businesses, or foundations. In some cases, donors are permitted to give only to organizations holding IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. For many libraries this means foregoing a gift, as the time, effort, and costs of establishing and maintaining 501(c)(3) status are prohibitive. To help Illinois libraries in their fundraising efforts, Illinois Library Systems created the Fund for Illinois Libraries. The purpose of the fund was to enable libraries to receive gifts from individuals or organizations that can only make donations to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
Illinois Library Systems will process any pending donations (employee matches, annual campaigns, etc.) through December 31, 2011; however, libraries should begin notifying donors, particularly those donors that participate in employee match programs, about the change in procedures. After December 31, 2011, checks incorrectly made out to "Illinois Library Systems" will be returned to the donor without being processed.
Starting January 1, 2012, new donations should be sent to ILA for processing:
Illinois Library Association Attn: Jon Daniels 33 W. Grand Ave., Suite 401 Chicago, IL 60654-6799 The annual fee associated with processing donations in a year is listed below and the library must be/become an ILA institutional member during the year in which the service is being used.
Total Donations/Year Annual Fee $1-$999 $50 $1,000-$4,999 $100 $5,000 or above $300 Visit the ILA Web site to learn more about becoming an institutional member. |
| 2011 ALA Emerging Leader Survey |
Five years ago, newcomers to the field of librarianship saw a graying of the profession and opportunities to change the face of modern libraries. Surveys and projections indicated that librarians would be in high demand once the multitudes of baby boomers retired. However, due to the stalled economy, that expected generational exodus has not occurred. Today, three generations of librarians work alongside one another with different ideologies, priorities, and methods. How can we bridge the gap between our generational differences? What stereotypes must we overcome before we can work productively and efficiently with each other? What can we learn from each other along the way? The 2011 ALA Emerging Leaders would like you to participate in a survey. Your responses will help guide their research as they prepare to present on this topic at PLA 2012.
