|
Alphonse F. Trezza, 1920-2009
Alphonse F. Trezza was a pioneer in library leadership in the state of Illinois and the nation. As director of the Illinois State Library from 1970 to1975, he fostered resource sharing among libraries and oversaw the establishment of multi-type cooperative library systems, still recognized as one of the best models for service in the country. Trezza also served as executive director of the Catholic Library Association; associate executive director of the American Library Association; executive secretary of ALA's Library Administrative Division (now the Library Association and Management Association); and executive director of the United States National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, where he masterminded the early planning for the White House Conference on Library and Information Services; and professor of the Florida State University School of Library and Information Studies. His many accolades and awards include the Librarian's Citation (1974) and Special Librarian's Citation (1965) from the Illinois Library Association; Honorary Membership (2007), Joseph W. Lippincott Award (1989) and Exceptional Achievement Award of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (1981) from the American Library Association; Outstanding Alumnus Award (1963) from Drexel Graduate School of Library Science; and Professor Emeritus status (1993) upon his retirement from Florida State University.
As of April 2011, the roster of Illinois Library Luminaries continues to grow with nineteen illustrious members, all of whom have been honored with at least $1,000 in contributions to the ILA Endowment. This campaign to honor Illinois library leaders and build the ILA Endowment began in 2008 and has now raised more than $30,000 in contributions. Please visit the ILA Web site for more information on how to submit a nomination or add your contributions to current nineteen honorees or make a contribution to honor any of the following nominated outstanding individual: Hugh C. Statement on the FY 11 Budget from Susan H. Hildreth, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
| In allocating the FY 11 appropriation, we have carefully reviewed our strategic priorities and our activities that have the greatest impact. IMLS supports a diverse portfolio of programs to meet the IMLS mission and bring high-quality library and museum services to the broadest possible public. In making these allocations IMLS balanced interests in supporting "what works" and also investing in "what's new" through innovation and research. In this way IMLS provides the leadership to help libraries and museums evolve their services to meet the public's ever-changing needs for information and lifelong learning. In addition to making careful reductions to IMLS programs, we are also reducing our administrative budget and will be rigorously examining our operations for cost-efficiency measures.

More than six million IMLS dollars goes directly to support Illinois libraries in grant funding, most notably Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants. LSTA supports all kinds of libraries including school, academic, and public libraries. With cuts at the state level, this federal funding is more critical than ever. Susan Hildreth will the speaker at the ILA dinner on Monday, 9 May 2011 at the Capitol Hill Club. To register, please click here.

Illustrator Barry Gott to Headline 2011 Youth Author Breakfast |
Illustrator Barry Gott will be the featured speaker at the 2011 Youth Author Breakfast on Wednesday, October 19, at the ILA Annual Conference in Rosemont.
Barry Gott was born in a log hospital and nourished on a steady diet of comic books and Muppets. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts during the Era of Regrettable Haircuts, he worked as a humorous Writer/Illustrator at American Greetings for the better part of a decade. In 2002, Barry traded in the office cubicle for his home art studio, and since then it's been a whirlwind of drawing, coffee, panic, coffee, e-mails, and the realization that he's still wearing pajamas at 4:00 p.m.
The illustrator of several children's books, including Holler Loudly, written by Cynthia Leitich Smith, and Dino-Baseball, Dino Hockey, and Dino-Soccer, written by Lisa Wheeler, Barry Gott is the 2012 iREAD Summer Reading illustrator. Barry will discuss his work, answer your questions, and get you ready for "Reading is So Delicious" in the summer of 2012. A book signing will follow the breakfast.
Look for full conference information in June!
