Judith F. Krug Is the Second Illinois Library Luminary
Illinois Library Luminaries honor those who have made a significant contribution to Illinois libraries and whose supporters make a contribution of at least $1,000 to the Illinois Library Association Endowment on their behalf.  The first Luminary was Peggy Sullivan.

The second Luminary is Judith F. Krug.  No person is more closely identified with libraries and the cause of intellectual freedom than Judith F. Krug, ILA member and director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom since it was founded in 1967.  During that time, Krug helped to found the Freedom to Read Foundation and served as its executive director from 1969 until her death in 2009.  In 1982, she helped to create Banned Books Week, now an annual event.  An April 14, 2009, editorial in the New York Times celebrated Krug's role in promoting and protecting a precious First Amendment right:  the freedom to read.  The editorial noted that Krug, "assisted countless local librarians and library trustees dealing with objections to library materials."  Among her many honors, Krug received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the 2009 William J. Brennan Award, presented posthumously by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression.

Update:  Summit on the Future of Illinois Library Cooperation

Co-chairs of the steering committee and three task forces (in formation) on Services, Structure, and Funding met Tuesday, February 23, at the Prairie Area Library System in Shorewood.  The group determined to focus their work on identifying a short list of core library cooperative services that are essential to Illinois library patrons and developing a plan for delivery, implementation, and funding of these key services to be drafted in the coming year.  Task force charges are being refined based on the group's discussion and will be finalized by March 15.

Each task force will be composed of approximately 10-15 members representing all types of libraries and library agencies, as well as reflecting the geographic diversity of the state.  Slates have been drawn from volunteers and nominations; proposed members will be contacted prior to March 15.  Meetings will be held via VTEL videoconferencing and conference call and information will be regularly communicated to ILA members through the ILA E-News, Web site, and other vehicles.

The task force chairs are as follows:
