ILA Signs on Letter to U.S. House Judiciary Committee |
ILA has joined the following organizations: American Society of Journalists and Authors (asja.org)
Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (clmp.org)
Internet Archive (archive.org)
Microsoft (microsoft.com)
New York Library Association (nyla.org)
Small Press Distribution (spdbooks.org)
Special Libraries Association (sla.org)
in sending a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. The letter calls on the Committee for "careful scrutiny" and covers a broad range of concerns that have been raised by various stakeholders. The letter reads in part:
"We understand that, on September 10, the House Judiciary
Committee will hold a hearing on the proposed
settlement of a copyright infringement class action lawsuit brought
against Google. We urge you to give careful scrutiny to the important
copyright and competition policy issues the proposed settlement raises
and to consider legislative or regulatory measures that could address
the fundamental unfairness of this attempt to make public policy
through litigation.
The undersigned organizations and companies
-- representing authors, libraries, non-profits, and corporate interests
-- believe the proposed settlement threatens to monopolize the access
to and distribution and pricing of the largest private digital
database of books in the world. It would do so by using the class
action mechanism to not only redress past harm, but to prospectively
shape the future of digital book distribution, display and search."

Summit on the Future of Illinois Library Cooperation
|
Monday, 9 November 2009
Allerton Park, Monticello, Illinois
Given the current economic crisis, the summit will
gather library stakeholders to discuss the needs of Illinois residents and how
libraries of all types can work together to strengthen collaboration to meet
the fiscal challenges, prepare for the future, and meet the needs of Illinois
residents in the most effective and economical ways. The summit should provide a programmatic, organizational, and
financial blueprint for many years to come.
ILA has contracted Maureen Sullivan to design and
facilitate this invitational summit for approximately eighty library
stakeholders. Sullivan has worked
with groups in California and Massachusetts on the same topic.
The December 2009 ILA Reporter will contain a full report on the summit and its
conclusions.

2010 Census -- It's in Our Hands |
The countdown to Census Day, April 1, 2010, has begun. The US Census Bureau has already launched a critical national effort that affects the apportionment of congressional seats and allocation of government funding. Census population counts help determine the distribution of $435 billion annually of government funding for community services. As influential community centers, libraries can raise awareness of and encourage participation in this historic event. With your help, the Census Bureau will continue to produce accurate data, which will directly affect the quality of life in your community. For more information about the 2010 Census and how to become a census partner, visit the Census Bureau Web site.
