Federal Dental Services Infection Control Course Big Success

OSAP and the US Air Force co-sponsored its 10th infection control course in Atlanta last week hosting a record number of participants including Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard/Public Health Service, Veterans Administration and civilians representing dental schools and other facilities.

The VA ContingentThat wasn't the only record set as course participants and speakers had to contend with a massive snow and ice storm that hit the Southeast.  Despite Mother Nature's curve ball, the course met all its objectives and the 300-plus participants left with an arsenal of new information, strategies, tools and resources to address their infection control challenges back at their home facilities. (pictured above are participants from the VA)

The 2012 course is scheduled for January 9-12 and will be at the brand-new Loews Atlanta Hotel in mid-town.

OSAP Board Finalizes Strategic Goals

At the November OSAP Board of Directors meeting, the Board finalized OSAP's Strategic Goals. This represented the culmination of a strategic planning process for OSAP that began in August 2009 and strengthens OSAP's mission and focus. OSAP's new strategic goals are to:

  • Identify, foster and build strong community of recognized infection prevention and safety experts/facilities within oral healthcare;
  • Improve infection prevention and safety compliance within dental practices, organizations and companies involved in the provision of oral care; and
  • Develop sustainable resources to support achievement of organizational mission.

On December 6, OSAP held its first State of the Association audio conference call where the new goals were discussed in detail with the membership. The conference call also brought the membership up to date on a number of areas including recent internal changes and future plans (PowerPoint presentation from this conference call).

Dentistry Loses Anna Nelson

OSAP member, past national President and pioneering member of the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA), Anna Nelson BS MA CDA RDA, died suddenly at her home in San Francisco.

A life member of the ADAA, Ms. Nelson held every office in that organization's local, state and national components.  Recipient of number awards and citations, she personified leadership in dental assisting.

"Anna and I have worked together for the past 35 years and she was always so energetic. She touched so many lives. OSAP and dental assisting have lost a wonderful friend. I don't remember who said this, but it is appropriate. 'Don't cry because she is gone, smile because she lived,'" said OSAP Chair, Doni Bird CDA RDH MA.

Your Generosity makes a BIG DIFFERENCE

Thanks to the following OSAP members who made generous donations to the OSAP Foundation during November and December:
