Oh Baby Oh Baby

OSAP Corporate member, David Pfeifer (Kerr/TotalCare) had to miss the June Symposium as he and his wife, Geanie, welcomed son, Brayden, into the world on June 25, about 3 weeks early.  Brayden weighed in at 7 lbs 9 oz and was 19.5 inches long.  We wish the Pfeifers our congratulations and a good night's sleep sooner than later!

SYMPOSIUM BIG SUCCESS

2009 Symposium

The 2009 OSAP Symposium kicked off on June 11, the day the WHO signaled that a global pandemic of novel influenza A (H1N1) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert to Phase 6.  And OSAP had plenty of programming to address that announcement. The theme for this year's Symposium was "Infection Prevention: Spread the Word". This year also marks the organization's 25th year anniversary.

More than 200 academicians, consultants, clinicians, policy makers and corporate representatives attended the Symposium. Participants came from Sweden, Italy, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, Panama, United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands - in addition to the US.
Plus there was a separate program for dental assistants where an additional almost 100 assistants from Texas and around the country participated (including 2 from Alaska).

Thanks to the generous support of corporate sponsors, the education and networking were the best yet. Symposium attendees left with a thumbdrive of invaluable resources and access to a webpage where all the presentations can be downloaded.  This webpage also is available to those who did not attend the program for a modest fee (see the OSAP Safety Mall for details).

While the John Molinari Charity Golf Tournament was canceled due to a huge thunderstorm, the sponsors and golfers donated their fees to the OSAP Foundation and had fun over breakfast with John renaming the event, "the first John Molinari MEMORIAL Tournament".

The annual Auction set a record - almost $150,000 raised ($145,000 and counting).  Andy Whitehead received the "Golden Gavel" award from OSAP, ADAA, ADHA, DTA and OHA.  The Board is very grateful to all who donated items, helped manage the auction, and, of course, to those who purchased the items to raise these important operational funds for OSAP.  The organization will use the funding to develop new educational programs for the dental community.

Speaking of "helping"...OSAP is also very pleased to recognize the record involvement of Symposium volunteers - attendees AND family members who helped coordinate all the details, and had some fun, too!  We would not have had a successful program without their help.  For any readers who may be interested in getting involved in next year's symposium, auction chair, Jean Wolff, and volunteer coordinator, Bette Schwarz, are already pulling teams together.  Click HERE for details.

Pertinent quotes from attendees included:  "It was a great symposium and I learned a lot and made some new friends. A great success." "Excellent information provided by all."  "This was my first Symposium and I hope to do it again next year."  "See you in Tampa!"

Next year's symposium is June 10-13, 2010, in Tampa, Florida. Mark your calendar!
