DISTRICT BUDGET DISCUSSIONS

District staff and school board members are currently meeting with parent and community groups to talk about upcoming budget cuts that could range from $4.7 to $10 million. They will also be discussing some of the ways we can address larger structural problems in state education funding.

We strongly urge everyone to attend a meeting and learn more.

For more information and meetings schedule, go to:Redwood City School District.

HOW YOU CAN HELP OUR STUDENTS

With your help, we can continue to fund essential programs for our students' education in 2010 and 2011. We don't want to stop there though. With more help we can provide even more funding to support the arts, academic achievement, and wellness programs. And we can work even harder to educate our community about taking action  to end the relentless cuts and debilitating uncertainty we face each year.

Please help us by mailing your check today to:

RCEF
PO Box 3046
Redwood City, CA  94064

Or make your gift online.

On behalf of our Redwood City students, thank you for your support!

NOMINATE YOUR VOLUNTEER INSPIRATION

We are seeking nominations for a new RCEF award that honors the memory of Pat Crawford and her service to our community. Pat was beloved for many years for her role at Open Gate Nursery School and was also well respected as a highly active volunteer in our school district and city. The RCEF was fortunate to count her among our strongest supporters.

Candidates should have an outstanding record of volunteer service in our school district that exemplifies Pat's lifelong commitment to education and her unique ability to foster and inspire volunteering in those around her.

To make a nomination, please send an email no longer than 250 words explaining why your candidate should be recognized to info@rcef.orgBe sure to include contact information for yourself and your candidate.

Nominations are due March 15, 2010. The award will be presented at Benefit for a Brighter Future 2010, April 30, 2010. For more information please visit: www.rcef.org/brighterfuture.

SUPPORT FOR FITFUN PROGRAM

Kaiser Permanente and Mills-Peninsula Health Services have both contributed $10,000, for a total of $20,000, to support the FitFun for Better Learning program. These funds will provide teacher training and materials for implementing the FitFun Guide developed by the district Wellness Committee and Wellness Coordinator. The FitFun Guide gives K through 5th grade teachers a cookbook of fun physical activities to keep our students healthy and ready to learn all day long.
LOCAL BUSINESS PROGRAM NEWS

RCEF champion Paul Maynes of Fastsigns is this year's Chamber of Commerce Golden Apple Award recipent. We were proud to nominate Fastsigns, and thrilled the Chamber recognized this business's ongoing commitment to our students. For more information visit the Chamber of Commerce website.

Thanks to customers and staff at our local REI store, we were able to raise more than $370 at our gift wrapping station this past December while spreading the word about the RCEF and Outdoor Education. We will have more news on results from the REI Giving Tree and Whole Foods tree sales in our next issue.
CONCERT RAISES FUNDS FOR MUSIC
