DON'T FORGET TO VOTE ON JUNE 2!

June 2 is voting day for Measure E. A "Yes" vote will bring in more than $11 million over 5 years for our schools to support, attract, and retain teachers and staff; maintain science and technology programs; keep school libraries open; maintain art, music, and physical education classes; and maintain tutoring for math and reading.

BENEFIT FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE -- SUCCESS!!

We are pleased to report that more than 350 RCEF friends and supporters attended our Benefit for a Brighter Future: Invest in a Dream (BBF 2009) event on April 24, 2009. Thanks to our guests and sponsors, we were able to raise more than $103,000, all of which goes to support our students.

We were honored to host Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction as our special guest speaker and Dave Girouard, President of Enterprise at Google, as our keynote speaker. Memo Morantes, San Mateo County Board of Education trustee, was our MC and host for the evening.

Middle school students from across the district also participated in the event, helping check in guests, acting as docents for our "What I Want to be When I Grow Up" contest entry displays, and even managing VIP parking. Three contest essay winners read their essays after being introduced by RCSD Superintendent Jan Christensen, who was also our lucky winner of Elizabeth Gomez's original "Invest in a Dream" artwork.

RCEF PROVIDES $43,000 FOR SUMMER MATH PROGRAM

The RCEF brings something new to summer school this year: the Pre-Algebra Summer Math Institute. This program is targeted to selected incoming sixth and seventh graders who are not yet scoring proficient in math.

The Math Institute will help to close the achievement gap for these students while preparing them to take algebra in eighth grade. Research has shown that students who master algebra are more likely to succeed in college track courses in high school. The Institute will also mentor four teachers to build their math instruction skills.

We thank the Silicon Valley Community Foundation for their grant of $35,000 and Oracle for their contribution of $8,000 toward this exciting new program.
