RCEF STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

We are pleased to report that more than 1,900 students entered our district-wide essay contest, with every school participating.

The  theme was "What I Want to Be When I Grow Up," and we have discovered that our kids have career aspirations that range from ice cream taster to satellite designer. We paired this contest with the Civic Cultural Commission's city-wide art contest for the first time this year, and more than 2,000 students from our district also submitted illustrations.

Thanks to the Redwood City Parks and Recreation Department, all kindergarten through 3rd graders will receive $10 gift certificates from the City's recreation catalogue. The top three entries from each grade for grades 4 through 8 will receive a savings bond for their post-secondary education, and we thank the generous families who are sponsoring these prizes. Winners will be announced in April, and selected entries will be featured at our Benefit for a Brighter Future 2009.

Many, many thanks as well to Susie Peyton, RCEF Volunteer, for making this all happen.
BENEFIT FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE 2009

We are happy to announce that Dave Girouard, President of Enterprise at Google Inc. will be our key note speaker this year. Mr. Girourd will speak about the people and things that inspired him as a student, as well as what he believes today's students should  be learning to meet the needs of the future.

Memo Morantes, San Mateo County Office of Education Board of Education Trustee, will be our host for the evening. Mr. Morantes has been active in the Redwood City community for many years, and in 2004, was named the Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year.

We are still actively looking for sponsors and volunteers, so please contact us if you can help. Ticket sales will start soon, so look for a special edition eNews with more details.
