Great Golf Courses of the World
St. Andrews Old Course

Old Course Swilcan BridgeThe game of golf has turned into an enormously popular sport over the years, and has given rise to numerous golf courses scattered across the world. China is an effective example of the exceptional growth of the game. The first golf course was opened in China in the mid 1980's and by 2005 there were 200 operating courses! With well over 32,000 golf courses on the planet and many more in the early stages of development, choosing the greatest golf courses in the world is nearly impossible. After doing a bit of research, though, there is some agreement as to a few of the most magnificent golf courses ever built. Some of the courses we found that were at the top of many charts are Valderrama in Spain, Muirfield Golf Course in Scotland, Cabo Del Sol in Mexico (a Nicklaus design), Turnberry in Scotland, Leopard Creek in South Africa (this one runs alongside a wildlife conservation area!), and in the United States, Augusta National Golf Club, Cypress Point Club, Pine Valley Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The first golf courses were built in Scotland, and were primarily laid out on links land, which is soil covered sand dunes directly inland from beaches. This gave rise to the term golf links, particularly applied to seaside courses and those built on naturally sandy soil inland. This brings us to one of the best and oldest golf courses known to the game of the golf, and one of the feature courses for this newsletter, St. Andrews Old Course in Scotland. St. Andrews is where the game of golf originated and can easily be called the spiritual home of golf.

Golf Green Tip of the Month

Green TipThe spotlight this month is on the Golf and Environment Initiative, which is a partnership made up of the USGA, PGA of America, and Audubon International. This initiative is dedicated to the game of golf and protecting and  enhancing the natural surroundings. They are working to gain support from golfers and golf courses to foster environmental awareness. On their website you can find eco-friendly golf courses, support your local golf course, take the Audubon Green Golfer Pledge, or find out useful information and recent news about golf and the green movement.

Great Golf Courses of the World
Valderrama

Valderrama Golf Club is located in Andalucia, the southern-most part of Spain. The climate is ideal for year-round golf. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Ten years later, Jaime Ortiz-Patio along with Robert Trent Jones, Sr. made improvements to the course, and the course re-opened in 1985. Their mission in re-designing the course was to make it a challenging test of golf to the avid professional and everyday golfer alike. The course does not play easy; it is a challenging course which requires thought and precision on each hole, and any wayward shot is badly punished.

The course is made up of a combination of Bentgrass G2, Bermuda, and Rye. It is said to have the best fairways in Spain. For a course that has not been in existence for very long, it has very quickly achieved recognition. The course has been host to the European Tour's grand finale, the Volvo Masters, and was host to the Ryder Cup in 1997. It also hosted the first two World Golf Championships - The American Express Championship.

In addition to being an excellent golf course, Valderrama Golf Club also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 1997, and all the while keeping the environment in mind...
Long Game Fixes Tip:

"To drive the ball longer, make a bigger shoulder turn on the backswing, and rotate the hips faster on the follow through keeping the arms in front of the body."
