What it Takes to Become a PGA TOUR Player
In 1983 I asked our local professional if he thought I could make it on the PGA TOUR. His reply has stuck with me to this day. He said, "There is no way anyone else could ever answer that question for you. You have to believe in yourself and what you are capable of. What you achieve will be a reflection of your own thoughts." This was great advice because it made me realize that the amount of effort, the intensity of my desire, the ability to overcome adversity, and the level of tolerance and perseverance needed to succeed are all controlled by my own self motivation.
Ability is a factor in being able to play any sport professionally...

Golf Green Tip of the Month A form of littering that has become almost acceptable on golf courses is leaving broken or splintered tees on the tee boxes. Unfortunately, these broken tees litter the tee boxes, damage lawn mower blades, and occasionally puncture golf cart tires. As eco-conscious golfers we can take the steps towards remedying this issue by picking up any broken tees. Another helfpul option is to purchase and use environmentally friendly tees made from degradable materials, which do not splinter as easily, thereby lasting longer, and do not puncture cart tires or damage mower blades. Ask your golf pro shop if they carry them and if not, if they are willing to order them. One example of an environmentally friendly golf tee is the Eco Endurance Tee.

Pressure Tip:
"When
under extreme pressure control your breathing, go through the preshot routine,
and execute exactly the same as any other shot."

People often comment that living the dream of being a PGA TOUR player is the best occupation in the world. This statement is true, especially when performing at a high level. To fully enjoy the thrill of success a player needs to know what components are necessary and how to execute each one.
The physical and mental grind of the PGA TOUR is demanding and requires a desire that is unflappable for a player to achieve their potential. To correctly balance the physical, mental, and emotional wear and tear of traveling and playing golf against the best competition is no small feat.
The body takes a pounding from the constant travel, walking seven miles a day, and making several thousand golf swings each week. To keep the body in top shape...

Q-School Interviews
Qualifying school for the PGA and Nationwide Tour occurs every year towards the end of the golf season. Q-School begins in September with the pre-qualifying stage for first time contenders qualifying for a chance to compete in Tour School. The first stage of PGA TOUR Qualifying School begins in October, a 4 round qualifier held at 11 qualifying sites around the country. The second stage of Q-School is a four round tournament held in November at six qualifying sites. Roughly the top 20 players and ties from the second stage advance to the final stage of Tour School, a six round event which will be held at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida the first week in December. The top 25 players and ties from the final stage receive their PGA TOUR membership cards for the following year.
We have interviewed six professional golfers, all of which have played in the final stage of Tour Q-School. J.L. Lewis, Jhonattan Vegas, David Gossett, Gabe Reynolds, Wes Short, Jr. and Omar Uresti give us their insights as to what it takes to succeed in Tour Q-School, mentally and physically.

PGA TOUR Destinations: Viking Classic
The PGA TOUR heads to Jackson, Mississippi this week for the Viking Classic held at Annandale Golf Club. The event takes place late in the year and provides one of the last opportunities for players to secure their playing privileges for 2010. Those who finish in the top 125 on the year end money list are fully exempt on the PGA TOUR for the following year. This added pressure can be a distraction that must be overcome to play well. Some players will prevail and others may not qualify. For the players who fall short it's off to PGA TOUR qualifying school for a final shot at a PGA TOUR card. This situation can be both stressful and grueling both physically and mentally. The players that can set the future aside and stay present, focused on playing each shot to the best of their ability will do well. Annandale Golf Club has been around since 1906, and includes a mix of left and right dogleg holes and good par 3s.
