The Gift of Golf
Golf Tips from the Tour sprang forth from a birthday
inspiration for our son, Cole. I felt that the best gift I could give Cole to help him attain his dream
of becoming a PGA TOUR Player was the gift of the knowledge and experience that
led to my success on the PGA TOUR. Now this information is available for others who are
interested in benefiting as well.

The State of Golf
Is the game of golf improving? This question presents an interesting discussion that leads to several past, present, and future facts about equipment, playing ability, and whether or not golf is becoming what is best for the future of the game. Equipment advancements have caused controversy the past 15 years or so because the nature of the game has changed. In 1995 I averaged 267.7 yards in length off the tee and was ranked 58th in length statistics on the PGA TOUR.

Golf Green Tip of the Month
Golf has been a sport of walking for centuries. The golf cart was designed in the 1950s, and has only been used for a short amount of time compared to the length of time the game of golf has been around. Many golf courses around the country are making a difference by switching from gas powered golf carts to electric powered golf carts. A simple way to be "green" and keep the environment in mind while enjoying a round of golf is to walk instead of riding in a cart, if you are able to. Walking is healthy for the body as well as good for the earth!

PGA TOUR Destinations: John Deere Classic
The John Deere Classic in Moline, Illinois is the home of my first victory on the PGA TOUR. Formerly known as the Quad Cities, John Deere began sponsoring the tournament in 1999, the year I won the tournament. The tournament was held at one of the first golf courses designed by Pete Dye, Oakwood Country Club, a rural golf course that was the home of the tournament for many years. I remember the course being deceptively tight and requiring precise distance control with approach shots. I played very well in each round and ended up making a birdie on the last hole in regulation to go into a playoff with Mike Brisky at 19 under par for the week.

Golf was Created by Sheepherders
People have played golf for motives of all kinds for years. The game was created by sheepherders who were looking for something to do while they tended their sheep in Scotland in the 14th century in the place where the famous Golf Club of St. Andrews now resides. They began by using sticks and rocks they found as the golf club and ball, and the next dune as the target. As the game progressed golfers have created way more motivation to play golf than the originators ever imagined.

Golf Ball Tip:
"Hard
golf balls have less spin and roll more when they hit the ground. Softer golf balls have more spin and stop faster
than hard golf balls when they hit the ground."
