New Vision Shocks Help Win Races

Dick Myers at RAM Engineering had this to say about our new Vision Series Shocks: Here is the 2011 Rumble Series Ft . Wayne indoor heavy 160 Champion, Cason Konzer. Championship of the two day event is determined on points, he won features both nights in a dominant fashion, along with 3 of the 4 heat races. This is an Eagle chassis from Ohio, and first use of Tanner by MB Vision dampers that I have built. Also nine year old Mike Clancy Jr. ran the first night on Platinum 4's and finished an even 3rd with the leaders. Then we put the new Vision Shocks on the second night in lite 160, and drove right by them in the heat race and won by a considerable margin. He repeated this in the feature before the chain came off. It was his first time there at this very fast track, so the learning curve was a bit steeper than Konzer. The second night caused quite a stir amongst his competition. I have built about 24 valving combinations so far, and I see: - Less hysteresis than a Platinum 4 Shock, and a whole lot less than an ARS. I would say it is equivalent to a Bilstein or Ohlins, which I consider to be industry leaders for this characteristic.
- The piston has much more flow, and so more steel is needed to get the target forces, and so build to build variation is much less. Valving increments are much finer. Other contributors to this is the support posts for valve plates and the backup thimble shape, which are nice solutions.
- The aluminum thimble makes a much better rebound stop for the O-ring, which should eliminate the plate damage I would see with other shocks from time to time, leading to a lack of plate sealing to the piston and loss of the nose.
- I have not really played with the low limit for gas pressure, but I expect it is less with the larger floating piston for folks that think that lower gas pressure is an advantage.
- The customers are pleased with the convolute shape of the threaded spring seat.
- All in all a superior product, with many good improvements for performance and durability over a Platinum 4 Shock.

Tanner by MB, with feedback from customers, has designed, developed and extensively tested our new Vision shock. The Vision shock is the most universal, user friendly shock available and hands down yields the fastest lap times. We have extracted the solid features from our Platinum 4 shock such as the NO LEAK seal, quick change spring feature, Titanium Nitride shaft coating, and added several additional PERFORMANCE driven features such as:
- Micro Tower shim support. Shims will not deflect during direction change
- 62% increased air/gas chamber virtually eliminating rod/shaft pressure
- PERIMETER FLOW pistons reduce hysteresis
- New Sandvick shim stacks
- Lightest shock on the market
- One shock length fits all cars
One of the most important shock characteristics not widely discussed is Hysteresis, which is the delay a shock sees when changing direction or reaches high shaft velocities. Typically a shock that does not change direction well will reduce grip. Reduced grip is simply slower lap times. The same holds true for a shock with high shaft velocities. At high shaft speeds the internal flow capabilities can cause a hydraulic lock as well. A Quarter Midget will see shaft speeds double of what you will see on a typical NASCAR race car or even a Sprint car and the Vision shock has addressed this SUCCESSFULLY.
