TECH TIPS by Norm Campeau |
Planishing Hammer Tips
One of the handiest pieces of machinery I use in my shop is the Planishing Hammer. The one I often use and one in which I helped design is manufactured by Mittler Bros. Some features that are designed into the machine which makes it much more user friendly than others on the market include:
1) The power head unit on the Mittler Bros. machine has a 1 1/4" stroke and hits at 4500 blows per minute. The short stroke allows the user to back down on the air pressure to do very fine finish work or turn up the air pressure to move the metal faster. Other machines use an air chisel with a 2- 2 1/2" stroke and 2500 blows per minute and uses a very heavy rivet setting head. This tool will move metal quickly BUT does a very poor job on fine finish work.
2) The Mittler Bros. machine has a micro adjuster with a lock on the back of the machine for quick and easy adjustments while you are shaping the panel. Other machines use an adjustable post which is clamped by a collet and set screw. To make adjustments you have to stop working, make the adjustments and then continue working the panel. This can be very time consuming.
3) The Mittler Bros machine can be ordered with a removable base so that on large panels or in areas where the damaged metal cannot be removed (quarter panels, car roofs, etc.), the Planishing Machine can be brought to the panel (this will be covered in a future newsletter and video). The other machines are fixed to the bench and are not portable. Mittler Bros. offers these machines in a 12" and 24" unit and is Made in the USA. See our 3 part video on this machine by clicking the links below.
