| Greetings! |
Another exciting month is in the books for Mittler Bros. Machine & Tool. We exhibited at trade shows in California and Florida and even managed to run our first MB Motorsports race of the season. Special Congrats goes out to former MB Motorsports driver, Brad Keselowski for winning his first Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway!
I mentioned in last months E-Newsletter that we would be starting a Monthly TECH TIP and you can view the first one in this months issue. Norm Campeau from Performance Metal Shaping has graciously agreed to write a monthly article to provide some valuable insight into the world of Metal Fabrication. This month, Norm tackles, "What to Look for in an English Wheel". Norm does an outstanding Two-Day Metal Working class with the next class scheduled for June 20th-21st.
I invite you to scroll down and check out this month's featured articles. If you have any questions, please give us a call at (800) 467-2464 or you can always drop me an email at drobinson@mittlerbros.com
We appreciate your time and your business. We couldn't be successful without great customers like you.
Thanks Again,
Dan Robinson and the staff at Mittler Bros. |

TECH TIPS by Norm Campeau |

Within the past couple of years it seems that anyone with a welding machine and access to a lathe is building English wheels, some are good quality many are junk. Here are some of the things to look for in a quality English wheel.
A) FRAME STRENGTH: The way the English Wheel works is to compress the metal and thin the metal, thus making the shape. Too many of these out there are made with frames that are too thin walled and too small of tubing, causing excessive flex and making your job both harder and slower.
B) TOP WHEEL: Many of the English Wheels out there cheat by using a caster wheel and use a wheel that is way too big. Most caster wheels are cast iron and are softer than the metal they are trying to thin [stretch]! As far as size, bigger is not better! The larger wheel tends to obstruct your view when working the metal, also a larger top wheel is heavier thus creating a flywheel effect which wants to fight you when you want to stop and pull back or push in the work.
C) BOTTOM WHEEL PROFILE: Many of the lesser quality English Wheels have a straight radius profile, which means that face of the wheel has no flats thus making you work harder. YOU NEED FLATS ON YOUR LOWER WHEEL!!!! This is where the MITTLER BROS. English Wheel excels as all their wheel profiles have the proper flats for the radius of the wheel making your job easier and your piece of work much nicer. Also, MITTLER BROS. reduced the width of their wheel to 2" wide. If you look at the wheel the only part that does the work is the part that comes in contact with the top wheel, the rest is extra weight [ remember the flywheel effect we talked about] ,also the narrower wheel allows for clearance on very tight radiuses such as motorcycle fenders.
D) RUNOUT, FINISH, HARDNESS: This is where i see the difference in the throw away English Wheels and the quality wheels. When you are looking at an English Wheel, turn up the wheel so it barely touches the top wheel and spin the wheel, there should be consistent contact with no loose tight situations. I have seen as much as .060" runout in lesser quality wheels, which leads to a poor finish on your piece. The finish of the wheels is very important. Any imperfections in the wheel will mirror itself into your piece. Your wheel faces should be polished smooth and maintained as such. I have seen some lesser quality wheels where the lathe turning marks are so pronounced that by running your fingernail across the face you could could actually file your nail down! This will greatly affect the quality of your finished piece.
E) TOP AND BOTTOM WHEEL ORIENTATION: Both the top and bottom wheel must be parallel to each other. The way to check this is to place a dead flat wheel in the bottom holder and run up the wheel to contact the top wheel. They should touch completely across, if not you will get poor results. In many wheels I have seen this is a problem and they do not have adjustability to make it right. The MITTLER BROS. English Wheel has a very unique adjuster so the wheels come in contact perfectly.
F) TOTAL MACHINE SIZE: This is where bigger is not better ! In my shop I have 4 English wheels, one of which has a 44" deep throat and the others being 30" and 24". The 44" machine does 1 thing better that the others, IT TAKES UP WAY TOO MUCH SPACE!!! This machine will work to the center of an 88" piece, but unless you are working on a school bus this machine is overkill. The MITTLER BROS English Wheel has a 26.5" throat which will allow you to work to the center of a 53" panel, also this machine can be bolted to your bench or to their optional stand. This machine will do everything you need and not use up all of your garage space.

MB Motorsports News |
MB Motorsports Runs at Kansas Speedway
MB Motorsports returned to the track on April 25th at Kansas Speedway with North Carolina hot shoe Ben Stancill behind the wheel. This marks the 14th consecutive year that MB Motorsports has fielded a truck in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with Roush Racing as the only other team that can make that claim. Ben qualified 28th in his first start with the legendary MB Team and came home with a solid 26th place finish after transmission failure sidelined him midway through the race. Ben plans to run 5-7 more races in the MB Motorsports Ford with the schedule still to be determined. Visit www.benstancill.com for more information!
Ben Stancill joins an elite group of drivers that have driven MB Motorsports Trucks in NASCAR, including: 2008 ARCA Champion Justin Allgaier, Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards, Regan Smith, Brad Keselowski, the late Kenny Irwin Jr., & the late Tony Roper.

Upset for the Ages! |
In only his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup start, former MB Motorsports driver, Brad Keselowski scored his first career victory on Sunday April 26th at Talladega Superspeedway. Keselowski drove the No. 09 Miccosukee Chevrolet to the win in the Aaron's 499 for independent owner James Finch and Phoenix Racing. Keselowski became the first Nationwide Series regular to win a Sprint Cup event since another former MB Motorsports driver, Jamie McMurray accomplished the feat while filling in for Sterling Marlin at Lowe's Motor Speedway in the fall of 2002.
As if that wasn't exciting enough, Carl Edwards, one of the most successful drivers to ever come out of the MB Motorsports Program took a wild ride ultimately flipping into the catch fence just short of the finish line after working his way from deep in the field. "We are very Thankful that Carl and the fans involved in that very scary incident were OK" stated Mike Mittler. In typical Carl Edwards fashion, he climbed from his battered racecar and ran across the finish line. Brad ran 2 races for MB Motorsports in 2006 at Bristol Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. Jamie started his NASCAR career running 15 races in the #26 MB Motorsports Ford in 1999 and 2000. Carl ran 7 races in 2002 in the MB Motorsports #63 scoring a best finish of 8th place at Kansas Speedway.

A Few Things to Remember "It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the job it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot, it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better." John Ruskin, Author - Economist 1819-1900
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten!
