Spring

March 2012

snknewsletter

The year is going by so quickly.  We've had a wonderful third quarter; although, sadly for the students: no snow days.  They will thank us in June when they are able to get out on time.  As someone from sunny Miami, I can tell you I was happy to keep my snow boots in the closet.

Our faculty and staff have worked very hard this year on our DFE (see December's newsletter and below for an update).  Our Strategic Planning Committee for the School has also been working in conjunction with the DFE representatives to keep St. James School at the forefront of parochial education in the Diocese.  As alumni, you know the benefit of a St. James education.  Our students continue to amaze us with their curiosity, generosity and faith.  They are a wonderful gift, entrusted to us for nine years.  For this, we are grateful to their parents.

Changes will be coming next year; and though change can be disconcerting, it can allow for growth.  We are excited for next year and the opportunities it will bring.  Please see our Pastor's letter to the Parish outlining our plans.

Thank you for keeping St. James in your hearts and prayers.  If you can, join us for golf on April 30th.  If you can't, come back for a visit and see how much we've changed since you were a student.  One thing remains constant:  We are the Rockets!

I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter.

Remember Mass!

Second in our series on our re-accredititation process

sjs logoOur faculty met on January 18th to ratify committee reports. All seven areas were reviewed and discussed, having been disseminated by DFE Chair Deirdre Prahm. Reports on Leadership, Governance & Finance, Curriculum, Personnel,

Service, Demographics and Facilities were sent to the entire faculty for their comments and revisions. All this as part of final preparations for the Accredititation Team's visit in May. "The thought and care that went into each report is evident," says Sr. Nancy. "I am proud and extremely grateful for everyone's input into our future. St. James School is strong and will continue to be so because of our forward thinking."

Working concurrently is our School Planning Committee. More than 40 members of this group and their subcommittees met in January to review guiding principals and receive orientation for their assignments from officials from the National Catholic Educational Association. Father Posey, Sister Nancy and Superintendent Sister Bernadette McManigal are hands on in this process. Work continues in earnest in their seven areas: marketing, communications, faculty & staff, middle school, finance, a pre school option and academics.   Recommendations are due later this month.  A final plan will be announced in June. Committee members have worked in conjunction with the faculty representatives from the DFE. Many thanks to all our committee members, especially our Chairperson Caroline Murn who has worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless set of initiatives from DFE to Planning Committee.

Changes in classrooms were announced earlier this month to parents and parishionrs.  Because of enrollment numbers, the school elected to reduce the number of homerooms from three to two in the following grades: Kindergarten, First, and Fifth.  Grades Seven and Eight remain a two-class homeroom with three math tracks.  Please click on the link below for a letter from Pastor Father Patrick Posey to the parish outlining the decision:

Annual Appeal Brings Needed Funds

Lkids1

THANK YOU to all who donated to our Annual Appeal so far.  We have raised $20,000 in under two months and for that we are most grateful.  Your support helps us provide the best elementary education within a Christ-centered environmentWe will be able to ensure continued financial aid to those who need it, assist in the purchase new textbooks and invest in new curriculum aids such as Lab Learner.  The latter is a cross-curricular, hands-on science program utilized in many public schools and a few Diocesan schools here.  It is everything you need for a top science lab: supplies, teaching aids, testing materials as well as professional development supports for our faculty.  Check out the link to a video which explains this wonderful new addition to St. James:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZxT5ard6Q8

Programs such as Lab Learner are expensive, but an important investment for our students.  We already produce highly competitive students who go on to achieve wonderful things in high school.  We still need your help. The PTO raised about $12,000 at their Auction last Satuday specifically for Lab Learner! Whatever you donate can help us bring state of the art programs, hire and retain the most qualified teachers, and provide the same opportunities for growth that our ever-competitive area demands.  Your gift is tax deductible.  You may send your check to the school, care of Christine Hughes, 830 W. Broad Street, Falls Church, VA  22046; or you may make a one-time gift via Faith Direct: www.faithdirect.net.  Please use the Parish Number, VA 50 when entering the site.

And again, thank you for your support.

In the Rockets Red Glare:

Lance & Downey Hinrichs

hinrichsfamily

We are pleased to highlight one of our School families. Lance and Downey Hinrichs are another link in our long chain of parents who have chosen a parochial education for their children.  We thank them for stepping, albeit reluctantly, into the spotlight!

Born hundreds of miles apart, Lance and Downey Hinrichs could not have been more similar in their pursuits if you had cast them in a movie.   Both, as young persons, were heavily involved in outdoor sports: soccer, field hockey (that would be Downey!), lacrosse, sailing and skiing.  There really wasn't much they did not try... Downey even having a hand at archery.

Downey was raised in the Baltimore area, along with her two siblings.  Only 45 miles away from Washington, DC, "it feels like another world," she jokes.  Travel time to Baltimore today, however, is not such a laughing matter.   Named for her grandmothers, Downey's given name is Ann Downes Ruhl.  "My parents always called me Downey and it never felt right to go by 'Ann.'"

Attending Catholic school from first grade until her senior year in High School, Downey recounts an ordinary childhood; one with summers spent in Annapolis.  "We'd go to camp where we'd play tennis, golf," and the infamous archery.  "That was actually a lot of fun!"

After attending Notre Dame Preparatory for High School, Downey studied at the University of Richmond where she played lacrosse.  She made her way to warmer climes for her post-graduate degree: the University of Miami.  There she earned a Master's in Physical Therapy.  "I grew up playing lots of sports and found PT after many internships in healthcare."  After graduation she "played the traveling physical therapist up and down the East Coast."

Working in Rhode Island, Downey met Lance at the Shake-a-Leg regatta.  Lance, who had been injured in an accident while in college, was a participant in this race for disabled sailors while Downey was acting as an event volunteer.

Born in Armonk, New York, Lance was also an avid athlete.  A lacrosse player like Downey, Lance was also a sailor and competitive skier.  Which explains his attraction to the University of Vermont.  Outside of the fine academics, those mountains are a sure temptation to one who spent so much time on the slopes as a young person.  He learned to sail on the East Coast and eventually became an instructor in his own right.  He earned his MBA from Columbia University after graduation.

The Hinrichs laugh when they talk of their long distance relationship prior to their 1997 marriage.  "We followed the weather," explains Lance.  Downey continued to be based in Florida, while Lance remained in the Northeast working.  "I was still in school in Miami; Lance is much older than me," she jokes - lovingly!

After marrying, they were transferred to Houston for Lance's job at Enron.  There he worked as an energy analyst, a field in which he still works today.  Lance remembers thinking, "what were we getting into," moving to Texas.  Far from family and in an entirely different geographical setting (the Gulf while near, not quite the same as the Atlantic Ocean), the Hinrichs were surprised at how much they really enjoyed Texas.  "The quality of life was wonderful," explains Downey.  "We had a great time there."

They remained in Texas for six years; their eldest child, Julia, was born there.  Both Lance and Downey laugh when remembering Julia's birth certificate:  "They put Lil' Buckeroo' on it.  It was pretty cute," says Downey.

Employment brought them back East, this time to Virginia where Lance began work at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC.)  Downey continued working "part time" as a physical therapist.  Her specialty is catastrophic injuries.  "I don't necessarily see the folks who tweaked a shoulder; I deal with major life altering injuries."  It takes a special person to work in this field: compassionate, knowledgeable, strong in both body and spirit.  Upon meeting Downey one gets the impression that she has this in spades. In addition to this, Downey also works for a company which markets an exoskeleton for use in PT for the disabled.  Though requiring more travel than she anticipated, "you make it work!"

Together Lance and Downey have three children: Julia (our Lil' Buckeroo) in third grade and second grade twins, Lindsey and Michael.  They are taking a cue from their active parents and "are all about sports," jokes Downey.  One gets tired (and a slight muscle ache) listing their activities: soccer, lacrosse, basketball, swimming, tennis, golf, ice hockey.  A nap may be in order for this writer.  But it's not all touch fields and courts: "they also really enjoy pottery." Both Julia and Lindsey are involved with Girl Scouts; Julia is also active with the school choir.

Though Lance uses a wheelchair for mobility, he continues to sail and is extremely active in initiatives on behalf of the disabled.  He is president of the Board of Directors of CRAB (Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating), an organization based in Annapolis which seeks to provide the sailing experience for physical and mentally challenged persons, as well as for those who are financially unable to share the wonders of ocean sailing.

Lance and Downey came to Northern Virginia for a job transfer, with the thought that they would enroll their children in Catholic School.  At St. James they found "a great community, with wonderful people and families."

Involved in many aspects of the school community as a couple, Downey also serves as the PTO Vice President; a job which she finds "terrific.  There are so many great people out there who are involved.  And that's what I would encourage [among all parents]: get involved, participate!"  She goes on to explain how easy it is to meet other parents and form strong friendships through volunteering.

"The kids are very happy here; they've made wonderful friends and are getting a solid education," says Downey.  Her children echo her opinion:  "I like everything about it," says Julia.  She tells us, "[T]he teachers are really nice."  A great plug for our specials teachers comes from Lindsey and Michael:  "we love the specials, [PE, computer, music, art, library and Spanish!] and all our teachers!"

Lance continues: "St. James provides great structure for the children and [grounding] in their faith.  They learn more than just the three Rs; which they do and do well!  But with faith as their guiding principal, they get so much more."

More than a century after our first students walked through the doors on Broad Street much has changed.   New buildings were erected; playgrounds, white boards and computers came.  But the heart of a St. James education has remained intact: provide the best educational, physical and moral foundation for today and tomorrow.  For all those who have taught, administered and sent their children to St. James, a la Bob Hope: thanks for the memories.  And the dreams.

Good News From St. James Students

Catholic Schools Week was a great success.  The students had a wonderful time decorating their homerooms and the competition was fierce between the red and the white.  Many thanks to all who made Spirit Day so much fun, especially PE Teacher Jane Briggs.

2012RED 2012White

stpats2012Our school colors are red and white; we wore maroon and grey in the 60s, 70s and 80s; since the 1990s it's been blue, so what's with all the GREEN?

It was all for a good cause as the Student Council used St. Patrick's Day as a Dress-Down Day for everyone: students and teachers.

This mega-fundraiser was to aid the town of Henryville, Indiana. Students, faculty, and staff celebrated St. Patrick's Day by REALLY "wearing the green" for a terrific cause. For a $2.00 contribution, the entire school enjoyed a full dress down day. Bright green hats, beads, earrings, socks, shirts, shoes and pins were the order of the day. The fundraiser was a response to the recent devastating tornadoes which struck Henryville, Indiana on March 2nd.

sca2012The town was virtually destroyed with only a few buildings left standing. One of these was St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. The church has been acting as the focal point for relief and rebuilding efforts in the town. Eighth grade American History students learned about the town's plight  in their weekly "current events," and chose to respond to Father Steve Schaftlein's request for assistance. Quickly organizing and advertising the fundraiser throughout the school, the Student Council raised well over $1,000 in a single day! "The response was overwhelming," noted Mrs. Denise Landon, Student Council Moderator. "We will be sending a check out to Pastor Schaftlein with the good wishes of the entire St. James community," added Chris Tran, Student Council President.

Congratulations and God Bless to all our Confirmandi who will be taking their final step in the Sacraments of Initiation on Saturday, March 31st.  Please keep them all in your prayers!

Keep our our students in grades 2 through 7 in your thoughts as they prepare to take the National Terra Nova exams in mid April.  Our students continue to outpace national norms and are among the highest in the Diocese.  Credit is due to our hardworking students, their dedicated teachers and their supportive parents.  Remember your days taking these tests?  You know how long they are, so keep the kids in your thoughts!

If it's Terra Nova, that means it's almost time for the end of school!  School closes on June 13th this year.

Alumni Faces

Congratulations to some of our alumni at DJO who have gone on to great things:

Congratulations to two O'Connell musicians who recently were recognized for their creative talents.

Senior Charlie Fidler won second place in the Falls Church Rotary Club music scholarship competition earlier this month. Fidler is a violinist in the O'Connell orchestra, who was honored earlier this year as first chair in the District Orchestra competition. Fidler is also a competitive rower on the school's crew team. He is hoping to be able to continue both his music and his rowing pursuits, while studying psychology and business at the university level next year.

falconCongratulations to sophomore Carina Falcon (pictured left), one of three members of the Royalette Dance Team, who were recently accepted into the Joffrey Ballet School's Summer Intensive Program. They auditioned in late January right before the Royalettes left for Florida to compete at Nationals. Each year more than 1,000 applicants vie for a spot in this prestigous program.

Gonzaga castGonzaga students, Phil Kiley, Joe Hamilton, Patrick Onesty, Matt McQuillen and J.J. Mitchell were cast members of Annie Get Your Gun at that school's recent Spring musical.  Reviews were terrific.  We're very proud of these fine young men and all our alumni!

After 25 years in the Air Force John (Jack) Limbach, Class of '56, has spent the past 22 years in the aviation business and flying the same type aircraft, the venerable Lockheed C-130 transport.  "Coincidentally, the one I fly most often, N121TG, was built the same year I graduated from St. James - 1956."  Jack resides in Montana and loves his flying.

Let us know what's new with you! Send your information to advancement@stjamescatholic.org.   We love pictures!  Send them in a jpeg format to the above email.
