December 2011

snknewsletter

Our school year has begun well.  The children are active, happy and now, anxious for the Christmas holidays to begin!

This is an especially busy year for us as we are engaged in two very important endeavors for our school.  Faculty, staff and administration members have been hard at work on our re-accreditation process with the Virginia Catholic Educational Association.  Occurring every five years, this year-long process evaluates and plans for several areas within our school.  More on this can be found in our School Happenings Section.

You will also read further down about our concurrent efforts with our School Steering Committee.  Both projects are working together to ensure that St. James remains the premier Catholic elementary school in our area.  I am grateful to all who are helping with these.

I hope you enjoy the latest Rocket News.  You and your families will be in my prayers for a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

Remember Mass!

IHMs Renew Vows

Last week, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, our IHM Sisters renewed their vows during a School Mass.  Pastor Father Patrick Posey spoke of their commitment to and love for our students.  He thanked them for their years of service and had members of our children's choir present each of them with roses.  The Sisters received warm applause and were treated to a reception after Mass by some of our parent volunteers.

Since 1923 the IHM order has ministered to our students.  We are grateful to them and pray God continues to bless them and their fellow religious who work to bring the Gospel message to all.

Reunion 2011 Recap

We had a great time at Reunion 2011 with gradutes from all decades!  Attendees were treated to tours given by SCA and NJHS students and a tasty spread catered by Amy Doherty of Sinplicity.  We even had Rocket cookies made by our current parent Priscillia Gianelli.  Alumni laughed, looked at old photos and were amazed at how things had changed.  Some had not returned to campus since 1955!

That morning the PTO also sponsored it's annual Nun Fun Run benefitting Camilla Hall, the IHM retirement community.  Always a popular event, the Fun Run brings parents, students, faculty and staff together for a great cause.

"We raised a net contribution to Camilla Hall of $3,018 thanks to our wonderful school and parish families that made up our 427 participants this year," explains Fun Run Chair Diane Seroskie.  Mrs. Seroskie also thanked Vocelli's Pizza, Adventures in Your Backyard and Morgan Franklin Consultants, all of whom made contributions to this effort.

There was plenty of competition that day, with prizes awarded to our Kindergarten, Third and Sixth Grades who respectively placed first, second and third.

winningnunNot to be outdone, was our new Assistant Principal, Sr. Margaret who left her tool belt at home and won her division for the IHM Sisters.

"It sure was damp that morning, but I know I can speak for all of the Sisters in saying we had a terrific time, "says Principal Sr. Nancy.  "We are very grateful to the St. James family for their generosity towards our beloved IHMs.  GO ROCKETS!"

 Planning for the Future

sjs logoEarlier this fall, we asked our parents and parishioners to take a short survey on our school.  Many of you have seen surveys from the Diocese, as part of our Design for Excellence program.  Additionally, we sent a similar survey back in 2010 as part of our ongoing self-evaluations.

Asked to rate their impression of the school and then to provide explanations for their opinion, respondents gave the school an overwhelming vote of confidence.  Out of the 196 persons who answered the survey, just (24) gave a rating of 6 (average) or below.  The majority gave very positive reviews citing overall academics, community and catechesis as areas in which we excel.

Yet, there were areas in which respondents said we could improve.  In this ever-competitive market, math and science are frequently cited as "hot button" issues for many schools.  We are not immune to this.  We have, in the past year, taken strides to augment our math program, offering Geometry to students who meet Diocesan qualifications in the 8th grade.

In an effort to address these and other issues, Father Posey and Sister Nancy Kindelan are working with a Steering Committee led by consultants from the National Catholic Educational Association.  This committee is comprised of teachers, parents and parishioners -- all of whom bring a wide variety of talents and experiences and all of whom are committed to parochial education.  This group met in late October and has been busy determining areas for further study.  After review, seven topics were chosen:

      •       Recruitment and Marketing
      •       Middle School
      •       Faculty and Staff
      •       Finances
      •       Academics
      •       Pre-School Option
      •       Communications

Permeating all sub-committees is our Catholic identity. All discussions and ultimate decisions will be made within the framework of our commitment to St. James as a Christ-centered institution.

We began our work assessing our strengths, weakness and opportunities; additionally, the committee is also crafting a vision statement which takes its direction from the school mission statement.   Meeting monthly until the end of the year (and with faculty representatives leading our DFE process), we will then share our deliberations and a plan to keep St. James among the very best schools in our area.  Thank the following members who are so generously giving of their time:

Caroline Murn (Steering Committee Chair), Matthew Lawlor, Kristen Conklin, Joseph Vorbach, Shirley Quiroga, Joseph Bracken, Connie Donnelly, Kevin McCabe, Terri Singer, Mike McQuillen, Jeanine Musgrove, Wade Lesko, Lori Dimond, Kathy Gallo, Cherylyn LeBon and Chris Fedora.

Each of our members are co-chairing a specific area and in turn, have invited additional members of our community to work on their individual issues.  In total, we have 46 members of our Parish and School communitieis engaged in this effort.

Superintendent Sr. Bernadette McManigal, Pastor Fr. Posey, Sister Margaret and our Advancement Director Chris Hughes will also work with this committee.

"We are excited to begin this process, which works nicely with our DFE process," says Sister Nancy.  Father Posey is also looking forward to this, "I am very grateful to everyone who has agreed to join in this effort.  From the representatives of the NCEA, to our teachers, parents, parishioners, everyone is committed to maintaining the excellent tradition we already have, and thinking outside the box for an even brighter future for St. James.

Students Remember September 11th

911flagsLast  September our nation came together in prayer and remembrance for the tragic events of 2001.  Here at St. James, the students honored those who lost so much as well as those who strive daily to keep us safe.

Flags were placed around the school by each student, faculty and staff member.  Despite starting with dismal weather, the afternoon saw beautiful sunshine as the children joined in a prayer service, led by Fr. Majka.

Sr. Nancy was very proud of the children: "I would like to thank all who made our remembrance service such a lovely tribute; especially Ms. Lauby and her choir, Fr. Majka, our Boys and Girls Scouts and of course all our faculty, staff and students who came together to pray for peace."

Save the Date for Golf!

golfcollage2011The weather may be frightful; unless you're in Florida, but it's not too early to start thinking about GOLF!  Save the date, APRIL 30th for our Annual Golf Tournament to raise scholarships funds.  Last year more than $95,000 was awarded in financial aid.  Now more than ever, we must work together as good stewards to ensure that parochial education is available to every family who desires it.

In the past two years we have raised close to $20,000 with our golf tournament.  This year we have another dedicated group of volunteers working to make this one the best yet.  We need you.

In the Rockets Red Glare:

Sr. Margaret McCullough

 srmargmccullough

If you were expecting a shy, retiring type in our new Vice-Principal Sr. Margaret McCullough, you'll be disappointed.  Like so many of her IHM Sisters, Sr. Margaret exudes energy, and a wee bit of wicked humor.

Born in Philadelphia, Margaret (Peggy) McCullough is the 4th of seven children.  "We lived a typical life, you know?  We were poor and didn't know it sort of thing."  She chuckles as she says this, as if this was par for the course.

The McCullough family has grown, comprising 21 nieces and nephews and several grand-nieces and nephews.  Five of Sister Margaret's siblings are still living; "one brother died in Vietnam," she explains.  "Just 19, but you know, my mother [bore] it like a good Irishwoman."

"I always like to build things.  I'm sure I get that from my dad."  Sister tells of how creative her father was, "doing odd jobs from wallpapering to wedding photography."  She admits to owning a tool belt and gleefully divulges ownership of an IPad.  IPad 2 that is!  "Can't help it; I just love gadgets.  And so, I'm delighted to see all the technology here at St. James."

After attending West Catholic Girls High School, where she played basketball, Sister Margaret worked for a time prior to entering the convent.  Part of her time was spent teaching, while she took night classes at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

While she explains that she had always wanted to be a Sister, having the support of her family, "it was my Mom that encouraged me to work a year to really see if this is what I wanted."

"I always admired the Sisters; I was taught by IHMs and even though I had a cousin who was a Mercy Sister, the IHMs were the only community I considered.  I can't honestly say there was anything in particular that influenced my decision.  I believe that God puts that desire within you.  It is your choice to respond or not."

After entering the community in 1976, Sister made her first vows in 1979 (on June 23rd, the ninth anniversary of her brother's death,) "which made that date bittersweet."

For the next 25 years Sister Margaret taught first grade in the Philadelphia area.  "Oh, I loved it.  Those children are wonderful; not one has ever had a full set of teeth.  So you never got a full bite!"   She laughs heartily at that one.  "I loved seeing them learn to read; they're so innocent at that age.  Their insights into God are so simple."  She recounts the story of one student, when seeing the hosts brought up during the offertory, who said that "'there's enough there (the ciborium) for everyone.'  He saw the miracle.  Another child asked, "Is that why our heart beats, because God is knocking on our door?"

She jokes that they finally "trusted me to send me out of Philly I was always missioned around the motherhouse; I called it 'binocular distance!'"  In 2003 Sister was transferred to Shamokin, a coal-mining region of Pennsylvania.  For three years she was the elementary Principal.  Three years later the Diocese of Harrisburg merged two elementary schools with Lourdes High School, making it a Regional school for levels pre-K to 12.  "Although the area would be considered a[n economically] depressed area, it had [a] richness of its own.  The area offers little in job opportunities with most of the young not returning after their college years.  "I loved being principal; you can do so many things for all the students, and the teachers."

An English major, Sister earned her Master's in Religious Studies from St. Charles Seminary.  She is certified in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education from Immaculata University, as well as earning her Principal certification.

Sister continues, "I think it's interesting and a little funny that so many of our [IHM] principals were first or second grade teachers.  As a principal, you have to be organized and [a teacher of those grades] has to be incredibly organized.  It's not like when they get older and can do more.  You have to DO for them, and the parents as well because they're new.  It's all planning, which is exactly the same for an entire school.  But you know, you never forget being a teacher as a principal.  It is HARD being a teacher!"

This small, seemingly unflappable woman does have an Achilles heel.  "Oh my goodness, the traffic here!  When I was in Shamokin people would joke that '[Y]ou drive like you're in Philly!' I suppose I have a bit of a lead foot.  But here, no way."  She jokes that the biggest traffic jam in Shamokin was at the Dunkin Donuts.

"I love being here.  The parents, students, faculty and staff are so welcoming, and this place [the school] is wonderful."  She is anxious to get out and see more of the DC area.  "I made it to an Orioles game, the Pentagon, Monticello  and one of the Smithsonian museums so far."

When we speak of vocations, Sister becomes thoughtful.  "If I were to be talking to my 18 year-old self, I would say that if you have an inkling of a vocation, listen to it; it's a gift.  It's like an [aptitude] for biology or math.  You wouldn't go into a field that you did not have some interest or passion.  The same with a religious vocation; God offers us the grace, the desire.  But follow that instinct.  And pray. And talk to people: other Sisters, a priest."

But Sister's "radical" side comes out:  "don't forget to enjoy life, though!  It's meant to be enjoyed.  And if God is calling you, if it's meant to be, it will. Be patient and let your [vocation] grow."

Sound advice from someone who answered that knock on her heart.

"I am very happy Sr. Margaret is here with us," says Principal Sr. Nancy Kindelan.  "She brings a wonderful sense of humor and great energy.  Her talents bring a lot to our school."

Good News From St. James Students

Our students have had a busy first semester and so have we!  We began, even before our doors opened, our re-accreditation process with the Virginia Catholic Educational Association, the Design for Excellence.  This year-long endeavor encompasses the entire school community: teachers, faculty, school staff in addition to staff from the rectory as well as parents working in concert on evaluation and planning.

Principal Sr. Nancy Kindelan explains: "[E]very five years all Diocesan schools are required to apply for state reaccrediting.  We begin planning for the DFE years before we start the actual self-study.  I am very grateful to [third grade teacher] Mrs. Deirdre Prahm in chairing this most important effort."

In her letter to the various schools undergoing this process, Superintendent Bernadette McManigal, BVM, sets forth the goals of the DFE: "it is the program each elementary school undertakes in order to demonstrate evidence of:

  • Compliance with the state of Virginia and the Virginia Council for Private Education's expectations
  • Implementation of the Office of Catholic Schools curriculum requirements
  • The quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning
  • Those components of the learning community that include Leadership, Curriculum, Personnel, Service, Governance/Finance, Demographics and Facilities

A visiting team of educators reviews the self study and makes recommendations (for us, this occurs in early May).  Thereafter, a plan is submitted to the VCEA (Virginia Catholic Education Association) for approval.  Once awarded, the VCEA monitors each school for compliance.

"This is an exciting time for us," says Sr. Nancy.  "While it requires a great deal of work on the part of so many, it is worthwhile.  It gives us a chance to look, programmatically, at what works in the classroom and beyond.  This ensures that we are always growing, always searching for new and better ways to provide the best educational experience for our children."

"I am indebted to Sister Nancy, Sister Margaret, Mrs. Prahm and all the faculty and staff who are involved in this tremendous effort.  I am positive that we will see wonderful things come from this self-study," says Fr. Posey.

An updated on our progress will be in the March newsletter.

We Rocked the Redwith Jason and Alex

 caps2011

We had a fabulous on-campus field trip for our fifth through eighth graders when Washington Capitals stars Jason Chimera and Alex Ovechkin came to bring a little hockey to Falls Church.

Part of their community relations initiative, the Capitals offer this type of event via a grant process.  P.E. teacher Jane Briggs applied and was thrilled when our application was accepted.  "I got an email from the Caps about a hockey school.  It sounded really special so I [applied for the grant]," explains Mrs. Briggs.  "It was the best ... so much fun.  Jason and Alex were very kind to everyone."

REDROCKThe entire school community was awash in red.  There were cheers.  There were chants.  There were a lot of hockey pucks.  Each student received autographed pucks or pictures as part of this wonderful event, which was aired by a local network and is on the Capitals website as well.

Angry PumpkinThe eighth grade got our their sharp instruments and carved up some needed donations to flood victims in Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Once again, the Pumpkin Patch married creativity and generosity among our students.  Each year our eighth grade students take a stab (pun intended, sorry!) at "winning" the most creative pumpkin carving.  Students "vote" with their dollars; all monies going to charity.  This year, it was Abby Lavelle who came on top with her Angry Birds.  Tatum Andres was second with her Smurf pumpkin and Lila Duvall came in third with her Thanksgiving theme.

More than $800 was raised by our students.  "I am very proud of all our students and the efforts they put into their work.  We are very fortunate to have such generous and thoughtful children," says Sr. Nancy.

Remember Catholic Schools Week!

January 29- February 3

Open House Tuesday, January 31st 9:00-11:00am

Join us in prayer and thanksgiving for our Catholic School.  So much of who we are was formed here at St. James.  Help us keep the promise of a parochial education available to all our children.  On January 29th we will ask our entire community: parents, faculty, parishioners, and alumni to support our most important ministry: educating our children.

Studies have shown having a school creates a special and powerful spirit within your parish, bringing an increased sense of community.  Whether our parish children attend St. James School, are enrolled in our Parish Religious Education Program, or attend weekly Mass, the presence of our school enhances their experience here.  Sports, service and additional activities join together to engage and cement familial bonds.  We are many in number, but one in faith.  It is this faith which is nurtured St. James.  For more than a century, our numbers have gone on to be Gospel witnesses, here at home and throughout the world.  That is our calling.

We ask you to pray with us that week and if you can, financially support our mission.  Our faith asks that we be good stewards of the gifts God has bestowed upon us.  As alumni, you know the benenfits of a firm educational foundation, because you received it here.

You may support our efforts by going to www.FaithDirect.net (our number is VA50) or directly by sending a check to the school, care of Christine Hughes.  Thank you for your support.
