SpringMarch 2011

snknewsletter

You can tell spring is in the air not by the daffodils, but by the children in the classroom!  Spring fever has hit and they all want to be outside.  Do you remember how fun it was when your teacher took you out to sit along the brick wall by Heller for class?  Or maybe even over to the Convent grounds?

The kids today are not much different than you were.  They still love their friends; our 8th graders are excited and anxious about the next phase of their lives; and they still provide with us so much joy and pride.

As we near Easter, the children are getting ready for the Terra Novas, the national  assessment exam, Confirmation and First Communion.  Please keep all our children in your prayers.  And know that your IHM Sisters keep you in theirs.

May God grant you peace during this Lenten Season and may we all have a blessed and joyful Easter.

Sister Nancy Kindelan, IHM

Principal

Save the Date! Alumni Reunion October 1st, 2011

Whether it's been a year, or ten or more!  Come back to where it all began.  We had a great time during our Centennial Reunion; now it's time to catch up with old friends.  Look for Save the Date cards in the mail.  Let your friends know.  We'll start the day just like Mr. Sinclair and Mrs Briggs would have wanted us to:  running!  That morning is the PTO Annual Nun Fun Run to benefit Camilla Hall, the retirement home for our IHMs.  So, bring your shoes and run for your favorite nun.

Not your cup of tea?  Or latte? Then join us slackers later for refreshments and a tour of the school from 3:00-5:00pm.  A special Alumni Mass will be said by our Pastor, Father Posey.  Evening gatherings are pending.  More information to follow.

Alumnae Serve Up Charity

On Wednesday, February 9th, Girl Scout Senior Troop 1140 covered the Parish Second Wednesday of the Month dinners at Christ House.  Under the direction of Mrs. Judy Rybak, who coordinates the Christ House dinners from our Parish, the Girl Scouts prepared and served 60 dinners to the needy of our community, ensuring all was cleaned up afterwards.

The room was filled with homemade food, energy, kindness and smiles from the scouts.  Senior Troop 1140 is composed of 9th graders, all graduates of St. James School, now attending Bishop O'Connell, Georgetown Visitation, and Washington-Lee High Schools.

The girls who attended were (standing): Caroline Metzmaier, Thalia Falcon, Katie Keating, Matilda Mubiru, Eileen Breslin, Alexa Saffelle, Camila Simons, Caroline Johnson and (seated): Maria Toch and Mary Donnelly.  Elizabeth Schilling helped with preparations but was unable to attendTroop leaders Connie Donnelly and Jane Schilling were both very proud of all the young women.

Second Annual Parish Fish Fry:

 Come for the Halibut!

For the second year in a row our Parish community is coming together for Lenten Fish Fries.  Lead angler (and SJS Parent) Tim Aubry sought to relive the family fun he remembers from his childhood parish in New York.

In 2010 we served almost 1000 dinners on Fridays during Lent.  Our first of 2011 saw almost 250 in Heller Hall gathered for fun, friendship, and of course: fish.  If you're local or will find yourself in the area during Lent, please stop by... for the Halibut!  Dinner is free, but donations are gladly accepted.  Last year, proceeds from the dinners supported efforts of our Social Outreach Committees and the School.

Parents, parishioners and alumni are welcome as we take our best shots at Penderbrook Golf Club on May 5th.  Last year, almost $10,000 was raised for our Scholarship Fund.  This event, usually in the fall, was moved to spring to avoid nasty things like sleet and hail which caused us to postpone our last event to a week later.  Nevertheless, a great time was had by all and we hope you can join us in the warmer weather of May.

We were beneficiaries of those before who made sacrifices to send us to St. James.  Our educational journey began in these halls and has led us on the path of active and productive lives.  Now more than ever, we need the prayers and support of those dedicated to Catholic education.

"I am so grateful to all our generous supporters," says Principal Sr. Nancy Kindelan, IHM.  "Last year we awarded $100,000 in tuition assistance.  We're able to do this because of the commitment of our parish, parents and alumni.  I hope to see as many alumni as possible on May 5th.  I can show off my prowess on the golf course.  No mercy, not even from a Sister!"

Lucchettifam In the Rockets Red Glare:

 The Lucchetti Family

Have you ever met a couple whose life trajectory was so simpatico it was almost scary?  Lou and Karen Lucchetti are that couple.  Born just a year apart in Allentown, Pennsylvania, their beginnings sound almost Walton-esque.  Too good to be true; but the wonderful thing about these beginnings is that they are true.

Lou and Karen's mothers, both from the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, were students at Sacred Heart Nursing School.  The elder Lucchettis met while attending daily Mass at Sacred Heart Hospital.  Karen's parents, (John and Mary Brezina) had a more Saturday-matinee-meeting.   John Brezina's father was dying; Mary was his nurse at Sacred Heart.  And thus, through sadness came a marriage which produced two children, Karen and her sister Nancy.  Both Karen's and Lou's sisters have two children and reside in Pennsylvania.  When the grandparents visit, theydrive together, the one couple treating the other to lunch.  We are not making this up; they would not make for entertaining reality TV.

While charming in and of itself, this story serves not just as background; it serves as a reminder of the foundation Lou and Karen received from their parents: the importance of family and faith.

It was not until their time as "Bando-s" at Central Catholic High School that Lou and Karen met.  She, by her own admission a "second tier flutist" with the band, sat directly in front of first chair trumpet player, Lou.  "I knew [Karen's] older sister at school, so I knew who she was as a freshman."  Karen interjects here with a laugh, "[t]ell what you thought of me!"  Lou, rather sheepishly but not without mischief, recounts how "I thought to myself, 'I want to marry someone like her someday.'"

"Someone like me!  Not necessarily me, but someone like me!"  The reproach by the now Mrs. Lucchetti is half-hearted and gentle.

While they attended different universities (Lou first at St. John's College in Maryland, then Pittsburgh; Karen at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania) they kept in contact.  After earning degrees in Political Science (Karen) and Philosophy (Lou), they married in 1994.

Jobs brought them to the Washington, DC area; Karen with the Department of Defense and Lou as a stockbroker.   With the birth of their second child, Karen decided to stay home.  Three children later and a move to the Bank of Montreal for Lou, and we find ourselves in 2011 with all five Lucchetti children attending St. James School.

You cannot sit with the Lucchettis and not notice several things right away.  First, their openness and good humor; second the love of their children (you need a sense of humor with that many children); and most importantly their commitment to, and love of, their Catholic faith.

"We had always planned on sending them [their children] to Catholic school; it was the norm for us, with 12 years of Catholic education ourselves," says Karen.  She goes on to say how much she "loved the Sisters: Sisters of Mercy, of St. Joseph, but especially the IHMs.  They were fabulous, well-educated women."

The Lucchettis talk of how they researched various Catholic schools in the area, but it was the "IHMs that brought us to St. James."  Karen remembers how impressed she was at her first Open House.  "It had everything I wanted in a school; high test scores, a good curriculum ... and welcoming."

Everything that brought them to Broad Street "is still here.  The Sisters set the tone and the standards for the school.  The important things haven't changed.  The kids love it.  Teresa [their youngest] comes home just as happy as when she leaves."

       LkidsFunny Lkidsmorefun

Such a shame the Lucchetti children are so morose

Karen is quick to point out that family is extremely important to them.  Their faith is a common thread which binds the generations.  Lou agrees. "We wanted a school where faith was central.  Saint James is a good choice because of this and the IHM charism.  The fact that there are three grades per class is beneficial; it gives flexibility to kids and teachers.  Saint James is warm, despite its size.  We appreciate the diversity here."  More importantly the Lucchettis note that Saint James has "strong academics and is very open about their curriculum and test scores.  There's a transparency here which is very good."

From left to right: Teresa, Gabby, Angelina, Frank & Madeleine

But, don't take our word for it; listen to the experts:

"I like all my friends and Music," says Teresa.  Gabby (aka "Gabby glasses" because, well, you can guess!) echoes the faculty theme: "I have a really nice teacher, Ms.Milligan.  And Spirit Day is really fun."  As you move up the age ladder, the responses get more thoughtful: "we get to learn a lot of different things, which is cool," says our Third grader

Angelina.

Our graduating 8th grader Madeleine has seen "a lot of changes, especially with the construction.  But we have a close group [in our grade].  It's been a lot of fun here and I am really prepared for high school.  I know I've made life-long friends here."

frank But perhaps it's Frank, our thoughtful 5th grader who puts it so eloquently.  And just to prove that he really did compose his own thoughts, see the picture with him and his handwritten notes about why he likes St. James:  "I think St. James is a great place to be because it fulfills its duty to faithfully educate Catholic children with the highest quality teachers and staff."  Truly - he wrote that!  WOW!

"We so are blessed to have the Lucchettis with us.  Karen and Lou are dedicated to Catholic education and supportive of our efforts at St. James.  They are warm and charismatic; but most of all, alot of fun," says Principal Sister Nancy Kindelan.

Fully aware of the choices available to them, the Lucchettis are happy with their decision for their children.  While it would be disingenuous to ignore the financial sacrifices made by families with multiple children attending Catholic School, Karen and Lou feel "there is no other place than St. James for us.  It was the right choice all those years ago [for their eldest] and it remains so now.  We're here for the long haul!"

steepleGood News From St. James Students

Congratulations to our 2011 Science Fair winners!  They advance to the Diocesan Fair in April.  Times have certainly changed and we moved far beyond the moldy bread or volcanoes (hey, they were cool!) of yore.  Now, winning entries have titles like "Fractography."  What is that?  "I'm very proud of our students, who spend so many hours on these projects.  Their parents are incredibly supportive and of course, no one would be successful without the wonderful teaching of our Science teacher, Mrs. Beth Rayome.

Good luck to: Raina Amirghaffari, William Aubry, Isabella Blanco, Sarah Harvey, Maddie Lucchetti, Kate Margevicius, Cassidy Olimpo, Claire Saunders, Jonathan Sarker (second year in a row for him!) and Jackie Yahner.

DID YOU KNOW?

SJSTV St. James School has their own "TV" station?  Every day announcements are made and piped into individual classrooms on our ActivBoards.  Students see Sr. Nancy every day and hear   important things like, who's our Doing the Right Thing winners for the week.   Each day students are nominated by their peers, faculty or staff for "doing the right thing."  A "winner" is chosen each week, who receives a coupon for a free pizza from Pizzeria Orso in Falls Church.  Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Sr. Bernadette McManigal, was on hand during Catholic Schools Week as our special announcer.

sjspaper Our 6th and 7th grade produces a quarterly newspaper?  Under the guidance of teachers Mrs. Mooney and Mr. Ghiselli, our budding Pulitzer Prize winners put out a fun and informative piece.  Stop by school to get your copy.

SpiritDay2011Catholic Schools Week showed our Rocket Spirit.  Service projects, special thank yous for our teachers, Open Houses and of course, Spirit Day were all part of a week celebrating our Catholic Schools.  The kids especially love Spirit Day when the school is split into two camps: red and white.  The competition is fierce.  Principal Sr. Nancy and Vice-Principal Sr. Lorraine vied for top honors with other faculty in the Rocket version of Minute to Win It.

Spirit Day also brought the return of Cheerleaders.  It's been a long time, but thanks to dedicated parent Lisa Arnold, they're back.  A talented group of young girls, they wowed the crowd with their routines.  GO ROCKETS!

Congratulations to our 8th graders who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on March 31st.  Please keep them, their families and sponsors in your prayers.

Kudos to our 8th Grade Boys Red, 5th Grade Boys and 4th Grade Girls CYO Basketball Teams.  They each earned the Sportsmanship Award for their divisions.  They're winners off and on the court.
