Greetings!

What Is Your Mind Focusing On?
As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.

Henry David Thoreau, 1817-1862

In my coaching and support groups I start each session asking what have been your successes?  I find this helps you focus on the positive and appreciate what you have accomplished and replace the negative tape running in your mind with a more positive tape.  Try it and let me know how it works for you.  Gratitude journals work also.

Time to reflect and slow down.

This past month I have had a chance to get away from office and home and slow down which even though I don't have ADHD (some people ask are you sure you don't?) I still have a hard time slowing down and relaxing.

I found that location location location is a big part of my being able to slow down.  This might be the same for you.  My husband and me spent a few days in southern Florida at my sisters weekend trailer on a small island that as the T-shirts says "is a drinking village with a fishing problem".  Reflecting back makes me realize that being away from the lights, the action,  hustle and bustle and the responsibilities of home helps me slow down.

A few days later I went from the warmth of Florida to a rustic cabin in Ely, MN with 6 other women and -20 temps with an out-house.  You might think that being in the middle of the boundary water area with nothing around, of course you can slow down.  Well this is not always true.  You have 6 other people who can pull you into action but you can choose to say no, I just want to chill out. It gave me time to notice how small the talons of the chickadee really are.  I noticed how the birds puff up their feathers in the cold to keep warm, to sit and listen to the stillness and think of nothing.

Where and when can you slow down and reflect? What do you need to be able to slow down?  When is the last time you have really just chilled out?

How do you slow down and reflect?

  • Take a slow walk in the woods
  • Shut off the TV and Internet and just sit for 10 minutes and watch out the window
  • Take a trip to a local in door park or conservatory
  • Take time to write in diary or journal
  • Sit and watch the birds
  • Take out your camera and go for a walk
  • Have dinner together at home without the TV on
  • Yoga
  • Meditation (start small 5 minutes at a time)
  • Walking meditation thinking about nothing

Tax time count down
We have talked about tax preparation, and putting a plan in place, now its time to hit the ground running.  We have about 30 days left:

You should have all the tax information in your hands so what is stopping you?

  • Find a dedicated space to organize and work on the taxes
  • Get all the form you will need (most can be printed from the on-line government web site www.irs.gov )
  • Set a side or block out time to work on the taxes ( If you are an all or nothing type of person find a day to dedicate to getting it done.  If smaller chunks works for you block out an hour or two over several days)
  • Do you need a other person (body double) in the room to give you the calming factor, and keep you focused?
  • Make sure someone else is taking care of meals and kids if you are doing your own taxes.
  • Work in pencil for initial forms
  • Have calculator
  • Check your figures (might use on-line tax prep sight such as www.taxact.com , www.hrblock.com, www.irs.gov/efile  or turbo tax
  • Take short breaks but set a timer to get you back on track
  • Wait a day and recheck your figures and math.
  • Sign your tax forms and put them in the mail. Don't forget to add your check if you owe money.
  • Sit back and wait for your refund to arrive.
  • Celebrate the fact that you got them done before the deadline.
