January 2009 New Start, New Resolutions, Now, Not Necessarily
Here are some suggestions posted in the December/January 2008 ADDitude magazine when they asked readers for best tips for sticking to New Year's resolutions.
- Stay Short sighted. Remind yourself to do everything one day at a time. Thinking long term is too hard.
- Don't make New Year's Resolutions. January 1st is the worst day to start something new: it carries high expectations. Any other day of the year is a better time to start changes.
- Start In September. For me the new year starts with the school year in September. Each family member devised his own detailed chart to keep him on track for the rest of the year.
- Make a plan. Set one specific resolution, write out a plan for accomplishing it, and try it for a week. If the plan does not work revise it.
- Envision success. Visual reminders are very helpful. Hang up pictures of what your goal looks like, or sign a contract with yourself.
- Program for success. I forget things that I do not put in my PDA, which is synchronized with my computer. To help me stick to resolutions I put them on my calendar or to-do-list, along with a reminder that pops up on my computer screen.
- Invest in yourself. I choose only goals that I am heavily invested in. If the resolution isn't important enough to work on every day, it doesn't make the list.
Some of these ideas might make it easier for you to make a resolution, whenever you choose to make one. You have to want to change or you won't.
Just because the resolution doesn't work the first time redesign the resolution and try again.

| 6 Tips to Overcoming Winter Depression (Additude Magazine) |
|
Six tips to fight depression during the winter season.
With the holiday celebrations to attend and family gatherings to prepare for, the winter season can be a busy and joyful time of year. But for many, changes in light and temperature combined with the stresses of holiday events and heightened expectations can increase anxiety and cause depression. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder associated with depression episodes and related to seasonal variations in light. Andrea Rogers, Supervisor for Intensive Outpatient Programs in the Department of Psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai, offers warning signs and suggestions to combat seasonal affective disorder this holiday season. "As seasons change, there is a shift in our "biological internal clocks" or circadian rhythm due partly because of changes in sunlight patterns," says Rogers, "These changes combined with the stresses of holiday travel, sensitive family dynamics and managing expectations can build a recipe for depression during the winter months. Juggling these variables can be challenging and can make it difficult to enjoy the joys of the season." .. read more

| Time to think about taxes |
|
| Take some time during the next few days to get your system in order for:
1. Start organizing and finding your receipts for your 2008 taxes.
2. Set a date with your tax accountant.
3. Start a system to organize and keep track of your 2009 expenses for taxes next year.
Start now to find the system that is right for you and that you can keep up.
I use an envelope size accordion file with the months on it. I place all bills and receipts in the file for the month as soon as I pay them. That way I know where all my receipts are for the accountant. I also use an Excel spread sheet to keep track of the expenses and a running total of the categories I need for taxes. At the end of the year my totals are all ready to hand the accountant.
You could use 12 large envelopes and simply place all your receipts in the envelope of the month.
You can use QuickBooks.
Take a few minutes in the next couple of days to decide on a system and get it ready for 2009. It will make tax time 2010 sooo.. much easier.
