Dear Parent/Guardian:

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent a letter to principals announcing that President Obama will be making a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will call on students, parents, and educators to share a commitment to ensure every child in every school gets the best education possible. The President is scheduled to speak for 15 to 20 minutes on Tuesday, September 14th at 1:00 pm.

Students at Suwanee Elementary School, along with all Gwinnett County Public Schools, will have the opportunity to hear the President's address tomorrow.

You as parents have the important role of teaching your children your values and political beliefs. If your decision is to NOT have your child watch the address at school, please send a note or email to your child's teacher on Tuesday, September 14th, by 12:00 noon.

Warmly,

Dr. Kimberly M. Smith

Media Center News:

Ninety-two students completed summer reading bookmarks. These students turned in their completed bookmarks and chose a free book from a special Scholastic mini book fair during the second week of school. Thank you to our PTA for supporting our summer reading bookmarks by covering the cost of these books. The students are so excited to choose a book of their very own to keep. The media center is thrilled to reward reading with reading.

The Gwinnett Gladiators Hat Trick for Reading bookmarks have been sent home with your child. Please help your child to complete the bookmark and return it to his/her teacher by October 1st! The Hat Trick for Reading game night will be on Friday, October 22nd. Thanks for encouraging your child to read!

Curriculum & Instruction from our Assistant Principal

We are very excited about our students who are displaying phenomenal leadership skills. They are taking more responsibility for their behavior and their academics. Each week we honor various classes for great behavior in the Cafe with special treats or privileges.

Suwanee ES teachers voted this week for our Teacher of the Year. Ms. Dana Vines, our Special Education Interrelated Resource Teacher, was our winner and will go on to the District Level to represent Suwanee ES as our Teacher of the Year.

Boosterthon Fun Run kicks off this week! Be sure to look out for fundraising materials that went home on Wednesday, September 8th.  Your child will be able to collect donations to support their Fun Run on 9/17. All donations are 100% tax deductible and checks should be made out to the Suwanee Elementary PTA. In addition to raising money for the school, the Fun Run team will also provide character lessons to classrooms each day this week and next. These lessons focus on Leadership, which supports our school's "Be The Leader" initiative. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our fundraising efforts this year.   Log on to www.funrun.com each day to check out the day's character message about leadership and to enter pledges. All parents are invited to come out to the track to cheer on your children on Friday at the Fun Run (Grades K &1 at 11:00AM, Grades 2 & 3 at 9:45AM, Grades 4 & 5 at 8:30AM).
