 From the Principal's Desk
Dear Suwanee Families,

Please join me in congratulating our very own Renee Barnett, assistant principal for grades 3-5. Mrs. Barnett is one of 20 school leaders who will participate in the district's Quality Plus Leader Academy for Aspiring Principals. The program is designed to prepare participants for a principalship in Gwinnett County Public Schools. The academy consists of a year long curriculum. Mrs. Barnett will begin her academy course work this month. One of the program components is a 50 day residency. Mrs. Barnett will begin the first 25 day residency on February 15, at Rocksprings Elementary School. During this time Ms. Carrie Yougel will serve as her interim replacement. Ms. Yoguel has served in the capacity of an Assistant Principal/Data Administrator in Gwinnett for 4 years prior to coming to Suwanee, and has worked in Gwinnett over 16 years. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff and we are excited about her joining the Administrative Team. We are also pleased to announce that Dawn Beasley will serve as a substitute teacher for Ms. Yougel during her time away from the classroom. Mrs. Beasley worked as a student teacher with Mrs. Head this year and she will be a welcomed addition to our Suwanee family.

 ****************************************
There have been some concerns that have come to our attention regarding the Car Rider process at Suwanee. We want to do all we can to enhance student safety and ease of traffic flow. Ideally, we would like all students to ride the school bus. Parents, please help us keep your children safe, by not dropping them off in unsupervised areas. We can not assume responsibility for students dropped off or picked up in unsupervised areas. Please remember the following procedures:
  • Students may be dropped off no earlier than 7:45 A.M. and dismissal begins at 2:45 P.M.
  • You may drop off and pick up your student only in the designated Parent Drop off and Pick Up area of the school. We only have enough staff to allow one entry point.
  • Pay close attention to your children as they exit on the right side of the vehicle only.
  • On the rare occasion that you need to park your car, please walk your child all the way to the door of the building to ensure their safety.
  • If it is inclement weather, the car rider lane will move more slowly and take more time. Please plan accordingly. On these days, we will not issue late passes to students who are just a few minutes late.
  • Please be patient with other drivers and do not pass other cars in the car rider line.
This process is one that is fair to all as they wait to drop off or pick up students. More importantly, it is one that ensures safety for your child. Thank you for your cooperation.

Warmly,

Dr. Kimberly M. Smith

The Readers Rally Competition for Gwinnett County will be held on Saturday, February 20th at Berkmar High School. It begins at 9:00 AM and ends around 2:00 PM. Suwanee Elementary's team has been hard at work reading and practicing answering questions since October. A county list is created each year of approximately 20 books. All the elementary students read from this same list. During the competition, we will compete in several rounds of play. The top four elementary schools will move on to a final play-off that will be televised on Gwinnett County Public television.  Please join us for this fun and engaging event!

Special thanks to Mrs. Lorenz and Ms. LaJeunesse for helping with the team this year and attending this event with the team. Thank you also to Mrs. Burnette for volunteering to help with this event.
