October 19, 2009                      Volume 3 Issue 10
 From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents,

The North Gwinnett Schools Foundation hosted their annual fundraiser, "The Big T'Do" this past weekend. I want to thank the PTA for the wonderful job they did hosting the Suwanee PTA table at this event.  The table was beautifully decorated as Suwanee went "Back to the Basics". The fundraiser was a huge success and Suwanee, along with all of the North Gwinnett Cluster Schools, will benefit through the grant process.

Today we began the fall administration of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) for students in third and fifth grade. The first day was a great success! The ITBS is a norm-referenced test that measures student achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. From the results of this test, we are able to compare the academic performance of our third and fifth grade students to other children in the same grade levels across the nation. For more information about the test, please visit the official test website: http://www.education.uiowa.edu/itp/itbs/ . The student data from this test will help us assess how well your child is performing and assist us in planning to meet your child's academic needs.

Thank you for making sure your child is present and on time for the remainder of the testing window. Our staff wants to provide your child with the best opportunity to be successful. Since the formal testing environment cannot be duplicated during make-up testing, it is to your child's advantage to be at school during these scheduled test days. Once testing has begun each day, no child is allowed to enter the classroom tardy. We are limiting parent access on campus during this time, all parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child, however we are asking that you refrain from volunteering in the building.

Although your child will not be asked to study for this test, the following testing tips should help your child do his/her best on this assessment: eat a good breakfast; get plenty of rest; and come to school on time. Thank you so much for your continued support. Your cooperation during this important assessment period is greatly appreciated.

Warmly,

Dr. Kimberly Smith

Curriculum & Instruction from the Assistant Principals

   Focus on Kindergarten

Math News:  Kindergarten students are doing a great job learning about solid figures.  They are comparing and contrasting solid and plane figures and identifying solid figures by name.  Some of their activities have included making solid figures out of paper and applying their knowledge by identifying figures in their classroom environment.

In Language Arts students are continuing with Jolly Phonics and have progressed to identifying consonant blends.  We are delighted with their hard work and academic progress.

Media Center News

The Accelerated Reader parties for 2nd - 5th were a huge success. The kids had a wonderful time playing READO (like BINGO) using popular authors' names. We got to play lots of rounds of READO, so we had lots of winners. We also enjoyed a snack.

The top ten point earners in each grade level were announced and each of these students was allowed to choose a free book.

A big thank you to our parent helpers, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Jones and especially the coordinator, Mrs. Sauls. Mr. Sauls deserves a big thank you as well. He created an awesome READO program for us using the computer, so that we could see our authors' names appear on the big screen as we played the game.
