September 21, 2009                      Volume 3 Issue 6

 From the Principal's Desk . . .

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your flexibility this morning with the closing of school due to inclement weather. Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 will begin CogAT testing tomorrow, as previously scheduled.

Due to a two point reduction in our regular education allotment, Suwanee Administration had to make some difficult decisions regarding staffing.  Based on student enrollment, we reduced the number of classes at the first grade level.  Kristin Cox's 1st  grade class has been collapsed and Ms. Cox has been reassigned to another Gwinnett County School.  Ms. Cox has been a wonderful asset to our team and she will be missed by her students and colleagues.  The students in Ms. Cox's class, after feedback from her and collaboration with the First Grade Team, have been reassigned to our other first grade classrooms.

The second reduction point  will be absorbed through the planned retirement of Cyndi Darsch.  Mrs. Darsch has been at Suwanee Elementary for many years as a 5th grade teacher.  She has been a wonderful asset to our teaching staff and has touched the lives of many students with her sense of humor and enthusiasm for learning.  She will be missed very much and we wish her much happiness in her retirement.  Mrs. Darsch's last day will be September 30.

We have also had to reduce the stellar substitute position from 3 stellars to 1 stellar. This position has been held by Jim Arndt and Chantel Campbell.  Mr. Arndt has been a wonderful support for our children with special needs and will be greatly missed, he will be joining another school in our district.  Ms. Campbell, was reassigned to a full-time teaching position at another Gwinnett County School. We wish both of them the best in their new assignments.

Suwanee Elementary School's current enrollment is 963 students.  Our student numbers have remained very stable over the past several years.  Therefore, we do not anticipate any additional staffing changes, but we will make you aware should any changes become necessary in the future.

Warmly,

Dr. Kimberly Smith
