Dear Friends,

Greetings once again from the 2:8 House.

A new school year is about to begin. A freshman class of more than 4,100 students moved into the OU residence halls yesterday, and classes begin on Monday! Ready or not, here it comes.

Actually, we ARE ready. This is an exciting time as we begin to reconnect with students who have been gone for the summer and we meet several new students.

Please keep us in prayer the next several days as we continue to reach out to new and returning students. Please reply to this email if you are aware of any new OU students from your church or extended family. We will do our best to connect with them.

Thank you for your partnership with us. May God continue to bless each of you.

Celebrating 20+ years of ministry at OU
By David Kyncl

Several friends of the 2:8 House joined together Saturday, July 21st, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ministry. The Nazarene Student Center for the University of Oklahoma, Inc. (now known as the the 2:8 House), was incorporated in July, 1002, and has been a faithful Christian presence on the University of Oklahoma campus.

That presence can be traced to the early 1950s when a student organization known as the Nazarene Preference Society was formed. It continued through the ministry of Norman First Church of the Nazarene. Rick and LInda Short began hosting Bible studies for students on campus and in their home in the late 1980s.

All the guests were encouraged to share their favorite memories of the ministry on cards provided at each table. Two of those testimonies are included in the column on the right. Several other guests were asked to speak briefly about their role, including: Dr. Carl Summer, former Southwest Oklahoma District Superintendent; Rev. Rick Short, former member of the Board of Directors and a pioneer of the ministry; Stephanie McCulloough-Lawler, a long-standing volunteer and member of the Board of Directors; Brandon Wilson, alumnus of the OU School of Law and member of the Board of Directors; Cherith Tucker, current graduate student and former member of the Board of Directors, Anita Shepperd, current associate director; David Kyncl, current executive director; and Dr. Jim Cooper, current Southwest Oklahoma District Superintendent.

"It was a great evening to share stories about how God continues to work though us," David Kyncl said. "We hope to continue to receive testimonies about how He has been at work in the lives of current and former students." Friends of the 2:8 House can share your story on our alumni Facebook page.

The faithful presence continues by hosting weekly 2:8 Recovery meetings, meeting individually with students for fellowship and discipleship and supporting the ministry of the local Nazarene churches.

Home improvement, 2012
As celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ministry, our house at 700 Chautauqua Ave. will mark it's 97th year in existence!

As with any home, we have a list of potential "home improvement" projects. Many of these could be completed in one day by a few individuals, a Sunday School or church group. Here is a partial list of projects.

Install wooden fencing: We would like to have a privacy fence build around our side yard. This would include 2 gates and 87 linear feet of privacy fence. A contractor estimated it would cost $3,200 of have this professionally installed.

We also would like to replace 33 linear feet of a white wooden picket fence adjacent to our back driveway. This fence was build by our neighbors and is in need of repair. Some of the damage incurred with a few bumps and scrapes with cars parked in our driveway.

Tree removal: We received a $900 estimate from a tree removal company for a tree located on the southeast corner of the house. This is not our largest tree, but it does extend over the corer of the second-story section of the house.

Window repair: One of the windows on the northeast corner of the house needs to be rebuilt. It appears that the window was built to enclose the front porch. It includes four, fixed panes of glass. Some of the wood has rotted and needs to be replaced.

2:8 House--God at work

During the 20th Anniversary celebration, friends were asked to share their favorite memories of the ministry. Some of these memories will be shared in this space in the coming months.

Jim Posey wrote, "the 2:8 House is a fulfillment of a dream and vision that came to me in 1955 while I was a student at OU. At the time there was NO support from the District or other churches, and Norman First Church was unable to fund a student center alone.
The 2:8 House is a long delayed dream come true!"

Stephanie McCullough-Lawler wrote, "One of my most precious memories is when we talked about remodeling the kitchen. The reason I love that memory so much is because I heard God so clearly saying 'have faith and it will get done.'"
(The kitchen was remodeled during Christmas break several years ago. Even though we didn't have sufficient funds when we began, Stephanie kept encouraging us to continue. When it was finished, we had a remodeled kitchen. God met the need through donated labor and cash donations.)
Deuteronomy 32:1-2 (The Message)
Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.
Attention, Earth, I've got a mouth full of words.
My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain, my words arrive like morning dew,
like a sprinkling rain on new grass, like spring showers on the garden.
For it's God's Name I'm preaching--
respond to the greatness of our God!
