Dear Friends,
Greetings again from the University of Oklahoma.
God continues to open doors for ministry as we find ourselves well within the Spring semester. He also continues to challenge us as He provides direction for the future months and years of ministry.
Last week, the Board of Directors approved our plan to offer a recovery ministry beginning this Fall. The board also approved an $85,000 budget and a fundraising plan to help us reach our ministry goals. You will find additional information listed below.
We also ask for your continued prayer and financial support. We have an immediate need for an additional $3,000 as the Board continues to work on the long-term financial goals. You are encouraged to foward this e-mail to others who may be interested in partnering with us at OU.
Thank you for your continued participation with us as we continue to make Christ-like disciciples of the Nations at the University of Oklahoma.
LOVE WINS.

Preparation continues to launch
recovery ministry next semester
By David Kyncl
The planning for the future continues. We held our first meeting with a group of counseling professionals and others as we began the conversation about a ministry to students who deal with addictive behaviors. The first meeting was very productive. We are working to begin offering Celebrate Recovery beginning this fall semester. We will be able to begin this initiative with our current facility and staff.
The conversation also included the possibility of forming a drug and alcohol free residential program at OU. We have a couple of strategic OU student affairs directors that have provided some direction to this discussion. This might be considered a long-term initiative, but it also could develop fairly quickly. This would require a significant capital expense to acquire a building, or God could provide a facility through a long-term lease. The operating expense for this initiative would be raised through the rental income generated.
An additional property could be purchased near campus to provide for the initial phase of a residential program. The following is a description of a 2:8 House-Residential Plan that could be implimented with the purchase of a former fraternity or sorority building.
Purpose--the 2:8 House will provide residential housing for 50 to 60 students at the University of Oklahoma. Student residents will commit to living in a drug and alcohol free living environment and to working 6 to 8 hours per week cooperatively with other residents.
Building--the house will include 25 to 30 bedrooms, possibly on two different floors and a large shared "public" living area. One or two private apartments will provide housing for paid staff. This building could be a former fraternity or sorority house.
Leadership--the leadership team will include a full-time director, a student resident assistant and a student leadership team. The student leadership team will be responsible to establish and enforce a house covenant with the assistance of the director and one or two resident assistants.
Budget--room and board fees paid by residents will provide the majority of the annual operating budget. Donations from individuals, grants and corporations will provide the necessary funds to provide for the purchase and/or long-term lease of the building.
Staff Needs--paid staff will include one full-time house director who will live in the house and one or two student resident assistant(s).
Management--the organization and structure of this house will be modeled after a scholarship hall at the University of Kansas. These halls have provided housing in a cooperative living environment to college students for the past 70 years.
Counseling Services--on-going counseling services will be made available to house residents. These services will be available either in-house or near the house. Residents may participate in Celebrate Recovery or other small group meetings at the house.

2010 Budget, fundraising plans set
Following discussion at the previous two meetings, the Board of Directors approved the 2010 operating budget and a fundraising plan that will help raise the necessary funds.
The approved budget includes $85,000 in approved expenditures. The fundraising goal was set for $100,000. This would fund the budgeted expenditures, provide funds for approved special projects and provide some carry-over funds for the 2011 budget.
The board agreed to help raise the necessary funds and suggested the following potential levels for donations.
Two--$10,000 donors ($20,000) (2009 one church gave $9,235) 8--$5000 donors ($40,000) (2009 two districts, one church and five individual donors gave from $3,120 to $6,000)
5-$2,000 donors ($10,000) (2009-- two churches and two individual donors gave from $1,450 to $2,400)
30 individual donors @ $1,000 a year ($30,000) (2009--one church and 8 individual donors gave from $800 to $1,500)
Special Note: Eleven churches and 35 individuals gave less than $750 each last year totaling $9,000. |

| Ways to join the 2:8 House ministry team
We are often asked by individuals, adult Sunday School classes or pastors about ways to become more involved in the 2:8 House. Here are a few of the possibilities:
- Pray for our students and ministry--Every week we meet new students. As our friendship grows and we share each other's personal stories, we believe that God will be glorfied. We also believe He will continue to draw students to Himself.
- Organize a 2:8 Support Group in your local church--We are beginning the process of recruiting individuals and/or couples who would be willing to organize a support group within their local church. These leaders would help us identify others in their local congregations who would be interested in learning more about our ministry at OU. This might begin by developing a list of e-mail addresses of people who might be interested in receiving this newsletter. We also would be willing to host a dinner for memers of a particular church who are interested in learning more about our current ministry and our vision for the future.
- Introduce us to a student-- If you know an OU student, bring them by so we can meet them.
- Join our Century Club--We believe that God will provide for the needs of this ministry through the faithful giving of 100 individuals, churches and districts. Our current monthly donations range from $50 to $620 while our periodic donations have ranged from $5 to $10,000.

Using "God-tools"
By David Kyncl
We just completed a beneficial two-week study on Stewardship at church. It was a good reminder about our responsibility and opportunity to be good stewards of all that Christ has entrusted to us. However, I was challenged even more as I read past the assigned scripture lesson for one of the weeks.
I was challenged as I read 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 in The Message:
" 3-6The world is unprincipled. It's dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way-never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity."
As we continue to minister at OU, it is reassuring that we have "God-tools" that are available to us as we build our lives and build into the lives of students. "Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity."
As I reflect on the past few months for this report, I am excited to report that I am baking cookies and meeting individually with students once again. Each reflects a significant tenet of the 2:8 House. We are here to make Christ-like disciples in the nations at the University of Oklahoma. As you know, there are more than 100 nations represented here.
Practicing hospitality is a significant way to demonstrate Christ's love to others.

Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.
Attention, Earth, I've got a mouth full of words.
My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain, my words arrive like morning dew,
like a sprinkling rain on new grass, like spring showers on the garden.
For it's God's Name I'm preaching--
respond to the greatness of our God! |
