2:8 Update March, 2009
 Dear Friends,
Greetings once again from the 2:8 House and the OU Nazarene Student Center.  We hope you enjoy this update about how God has been at work.

We encourage you to join us in thanksgiving as you read how God has been at work. As you read and pray, we also would ask that you consider forwarding this e-mail to some friends who may be interested in learning more about the 2:8 House. You also might want to forward this e-mail to your church's youth pastor.

We thank God for your participation with us as we seek to reach out to the University of Oklahoma campus.

LOVE WINS.

Youth Pastors, Are You Ready for some Football?
Youth Pastors from across Oklahoma are invited to join us for OU's Red and White game, Saturday, April 11, 2009.
The 2:8 House will provide free parking, a free ticket for the game AND a free pre-game meal.
"This is another way to connect with youth pastors," Craig Shepperd said. "We want to say 'thank you for all you do', and we want to help with the transistion for any of their students who are attending OU this fall."
The pre-game meal will be served promptly at 11 a.m. which will be followed by a brief orientation to the 2:8 House and a short walk to the football game. Kickoff is scheduled at 1 p.m.
Reservations are required. Please contact Craig at cranita@28house.org to reserve your space.
Ways to join the 2:8 House ministry team
We are often asked by individuals, adult Sunday School classes or pastors about possible ways to become more involved in the 2:8 House.
Here are a few of the possibilities:
  • Pray for our students and ministry--Every week we meet new students. As our friendship grows and we share each other's personal stories, we believe that God will be glorfied. We also beli
  • Schedule a work day--Does your group do windows? We have more than 50 double-hung windows. A work day could include washing windows, installing wooden storm windows, painting our storage shed, landscaping, installing guttering, etc. Our house was built in 1915, so it could always use some extra tender loving care.
  • Help with a lunch--Serve a meal or help with dishes (you could give a regular volunteer a break), bake a dessert (cookies, brownies, cakes), provide a meal (just remember the meal ususally serves at least 150 students), sponsor a meal (a $300 donation would pay for the food for a meal).
  • Mentor a Student -- We would like ot link students with Christian professionals in their area of expertise.
  • Shopping buddies - volunteer to take a carless student shopping
  • Introduce us to a student-- if you know an OU student, bring them by so we can meet them.
  • Sponsor a football ticket--We have a block of 14 season tickets to OU football games. This has been an excellent way to introduce others to the 2:8 House ministry. A $370 donation would sponsor a ticket for the season.
  • Join our Century Club--We believe that God will provide for the needs of this ministry through the faithful giving of 100 individuals, churches and districts. Our current monthly donations range from $50 to $620 while our periodic donations have ranged from $5 to $10,000.
 Lunch moves outside
A generous donation of three picnic tables from Norman Community Church of the Nazarene has extended the dining room to the yard during our weekly Fat Tuesday lunches.
Weather permitting, we now have seating for an additional 24 students. Each of the tables also folds for easier storage.
Work continues toward 2009 financial goals
Anyone who has been a part of the 2:8 House ministry knows that we rely on the generous support of individuals, churches and districts to provide the needed financial support.
In November 2008, the Board of Directors set a goal to increase monthly donations to cover the salary expenses for David and Craig. In December, we reported that an additonal $1,350 in monthly pledges was needed to cover salary expenses. As of today, an additional $1,000 in monthly contributions is needed. So there has been progress toward reaching the goal. An additional $3,000 per month would fully fund the ministry through monthly donations.
As we build the monthly support, periodic gifts will continue to be necessary. An additional $5,000 will be needed in April to cover regular expenses incurred this month.
We thank God for His faithful provision for our family and this ministry.

The Listening continues
Last month we announced the release of a new book that encourages dialogue with "twentysomeones" and others within the local church.

This past month a national conference call with David was hosted by Continued Lay Training and Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries and a new blog also was launched facilitate the dialogue.

You are encouraged to join the Listening Post blog at www.nazareneblogs.org/listeningpost.
The  book  may be ordered from Nazarene Publishing House.  The study guide is available by following this link.

Engaging in Discipleship

Have you ever wondered if it is really worth the investment of time and energy to invest spiritually in the lives of others? The process of sharing life with someone can be a challenge, and then when you through faith into the mix, what then. What if they ask a question that can't be answered with John 3:16? What if they struggle in an area where I, too, have struggled or continue to struggle?
As you may know, my faith was transformed through a discipling relationship while I was a college student. I was safely attending a local church. (I even sang in the choir.) I usually attended the college Sunday School class. But then, I met Gary. He challenged me to begin to study scripture for myself. He asked me to describe my faith without using the pat answers I always heard at church. He challenged me to begin to share my faith with others on a regular basis. He also modeled what it was like to make an investment in discipleship. I was forever changed. God has provided the opportunity to disciple college students ever since.
If you have wondered about the first question--the answer is YES. I had another reminder of that fact earlier this week.
For the past few years, a student named John has been a regular part of our Tuesday lunch crew. John was actively involved in a local church and served in a leadership capacity there. While he was "plugged in" to ministry at another location, he enjoyed inviting his friends to join him for lunch at the 2:8 House.
Last semester, I asked John if he would like to begin meeting regularly.  Sometimes we meet on campus, at the 2:8, at his house. He has even fixed me breakfast.  Every time we share how God is at work in and through us. We talk. We pray. We have become friends-even  brothers in the faith.
In a few months, John graduates-- that special time in life when a university awards you a special piece of paper and launches you into the next phase of life. We have talked about the "next step," the job search, the possibility that God has gifted and called him to serve Him in engineering. Last week, I mentioned to John that I had a friend I would like for him to meet.
I called Chris.
On Monday, John and I drove to Oklahoma City to meet Chris. He is an engineer. He moved to Oklahoma City 15 years ago to begin his first "real job."  He now owns the company. He is a good friend. He is a brother in the faith. In fact, he is someone I was able to disciple when he was a student at Pittsburg State University. On Monday, he talked with John about engineering, about interviewing for a job, about spending time with family, about faith.
Chris gave us a tour of his manufacturing plant. He talked about some of his current projects and challenges. He even took us to lunch.
Life was shared. Christ was honored. John noticed.
"I thought it was really cool to be a part of two generations of discipleship," John said. " You have been discipling me, and I had a chance to meet someone you discipled before."
He also was challenged and encouraged by the visit.
"I spend so much time in the classroom, it was really cool to walk through the plant and to talk to someone about who is doing  the day-to-day work."
As I shared a couple of hours with Chris and John, as I listened to them talk about various projects and engineering processes, as they shared parts of their faith journeys, I was reminded of the personal privilege God has given me to  be a part of both of these young men's lives.
God still is in the business of changing lives. He still loves us. He created us with unique gifts and interests. He still calls us into relationship-with Him and with others.
Discipleship works.
LOVE WINS.

Deuteronomy 32:1-2 (The Message)
Listen, Heavens, I have something to tell you.
Attention, Earth, I've got a mouth full of words.
My teaching, let it fall like a gentle rain, my words arrive like morning dew,
like a sprinkling rain on new grass, like spring showers on the garden.
For it's God's Name I'm preaching--
respond to the greatness of our God!
