What type of wax should I use?
With so many choices of wax on the market today it can quickly become overwhelming and confusing for you to know which one(s) have the qualities and characteristics you are looking for and which one(s) may be best for you.  Hopefully some of the information below will help you out.

Although paraffin waxes have been popular for quite some time, soy waxes and soy blends are continually gaining marketshare and increasing in popularity.  When soy waxes were first introduced, they were a little tricky to work with, however, over time, soy manufacturers have continued to refine their processes making soy waxes and soy blends easier to work with, providing great scent throw, good adhesion, smoothness, and less frosting.

If you are interested in being "green" and promoting a product that is truly eco-friendly and all-natural, you will probably want to go with a pure soy wax such as our GW402, GW415, or Naturewax C-3.  These soy waxes contain no additives.  Some drawbacks to using a pure soy wax is that scent throw may not be quite as strong and frosting may occur since there are no additives.

If a stronger scent throw is important to you, then you may want to consider using an ENHANCED soy wax.  GW444 or GW464 both contain a soy-based additive which is FDA-approved that enables the soy to be poured at a higher temperature reducing frosting and increasing the fragrance oil load.

Another choice if you are looking for a wax that is easier to work with than a pure soy or enhanced soy would be a soy blend.  Soy blends are a mixture of both soy wax and paraffin wax.  Some are a 50/50 blend, while others are a 70/30 or 30/70 blend.  Everyone has a different opinion of what seems to work best for them, so it's best to test out different percentages to see which formula works best for you.  Obviously, a blend with more paraffin wax in it is going to be easier to work with and probably have a stronger scent throw.  Using a blend however still enables you to market your products as a "soy blend" or "soy based" product.  A very popular blend is IGI 6006. Although IGI does not disclose the exact percentage of soy vs. paraffin in each blend, IGI 6006 is closest to a 70% paraffin/30% soy blend. In the near future we will also be carrying additional parasoy blends from IGI.  You can also create your own blend by purchasing these waxes separately and mixing them yourself.  To do this try using our IGI-4636 or IGI-4630 with GW402 or GW415.

Have fun experimenting and creating something that is uniquely yours!

Quick Tip:

When making soy pillar candles, if you add about 10-15% of the Naturewax C-3 soy container wax to the Naturewax P-1 soy pillar wax, it will give it a little more "stickiness" and help eliminate cracking.
